As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

It’s a slightly different situation in that Stanley was being played out of position viewed as being better as a ruck whereas TDK has been playing ruck and is considered to have huge upside ahead of him.
Well I saw the potential in Stanley... But I don't see that with TDK..
Look I hope he proves me wrong, but a bloke in his 6th season ( be 7th if he comes to us next year ) has done absolutely SFA...
Look the difference in Hawkins in his 6th season..
All Australian ( we all know his stats
But honestly TDK has done nothing, and we will be paying overs for a bloke who done nothing in his 50 game career

Serious question, are we in Harley Reid's ear already?

Country boy, Cats tragic...Eagles have all but locked up the number 1 pick and are historically inept.

If he did a 'Horne-Francis' so to speak, he'd be at the Cats by October 2024.

Part of me says it's wishful thinking...part of me says it's a distinct possibility.

Fair enough. Rucks often come into their best in their late 20s. Time is on his side.

A question regarding TDK - weren't we reportedly previously interested in him but Carlton weren't open to considering a trade; was that before or after we drafted brother Sam?

That was a couple of years ago after we took sam.

I like your post Turbo, but at times they go on a bit much lol 😆

I just want milk that taste like milk in writing post

But with TDK, I would rather us go after Sweet or Hayes, as a back up option to Conway being or No 1 ruck for years to come. But you never know Sweet could be the option as being No 1 ruck , you never know.
As alot of teams no 1 clubs ruck have come from different clubs

Ok. You want brevity. No to Sweet. No to Hayes. Neither have shown me anything at afl level.

The elephant in the room is we can’t play DK, J Henry, Ratugolea and Kolo. One of them will miss out and it ain’t the first two.

Kolo has also never been dropped as far as I can remember 👀
The elephant in the room is that we did, in fact, play all four of them on the only occasion all were available this year.

(Matt Scarlett, Tom Lonergan, Harry Taylor & Andrew Mackie also say hi.)

sad trombone sound

We were missing about 14 players that week. Let’s see if it happens when we have a fit list.

(Mackie = Stewart in this context)

Sweet or someone like him would be a Moneyball selection. It would leave us with a pick to try to secure a quality midfielder.

Who knows who may become available?

The Moneyball thing is often used description. I have used it myself. Id say the origin of the term probably was more about adding players to a side for a cheap wage. Perhaps cheap trade as well as the players were almost unwanted. The adage of ..get on base... seemed to be the defining criteria , and going past good looking players with good looking girlfriends etc.

Id say in afl , the concept is a little different. For a start , a club can not just shuffle unloved players. It amazes me that a guy in baseball could be traded while on the field playing for the side. They also have a very different TPP arrangement. The point was made that Yankees and "A's" had a huge disparity in TPP. No salary cap like in our system. How can a club that pays less compete? The disparity in afl is probably draft picks rather than players wage.

We place a high value on the cost of the trade, as is shown in the linked article below. But is a moneyball player a way to add a backup. Maybe. The cost is negligble but Id say Smith is as Moneyball as you could get. Become a best22 player. No draft cost.

Was Ceglar Moenyball?

Thats what I think happens if you bring in a Sweet type. Mostly they sit in the VFL. They back up your preferred option. If there is no doubt Conway will be our best ruck options next year, and will play most of the games..then a Sweet type might be worth consideration. My concern is what happened to Fort. Once the MC consider their output and still prefer to ruck Blitz than bring them in. Is Sweet and Hayes the type that Chris Scott has shown he likes. Id say not, so we may as well add another kid to develop. Someone althletic and becomes a tallish midfielder.

4. Free agents are worth the money.

Free-Agents who are in form at the right time will definitely get paid a premium, because a club can get them without needing to part with anything in a trade.

It’s having your cake (keeping your early draft picks) and eating it too (securing a gun senior player).

Richmond parted with a future first-round pick (currently top 10 in a hot draft) and a second-round pick to secure Jacob Hopper last year.

Richmond paid up to get Jacob Hopper a year before free agency. Picture: Getty Images
If they had waited one year, they would’ve got him for nothing!

Of this year’s remaining crop of free agents, there are a couple who are having great years and have boosted their value.

Mason Redman and Harry Himmelberg are performing at a really high level (All Australian 40 squad) and will attract big dollars and long contracts.

Redman is a half-back but could command $700k+ while Himmelberg is a key position player who can play both ends, so will be looking at a contract of $800k+ for 5 years.

This would trigger first-round compensation, which would be a consideration for GWS.

Darcy Parish is playing well and is a genuine midfielder, so will attract a long-term deal, but not at outrageous money.

He’s got a very good coach and a more stable environment, so expect him to stay.

Ben McKay has played some good games, but has only played 62 times in nearly eight years and averages 9.5 possessions and one contested mark per game.

A long-term deal at good money feels high risk for him.

St Kilda’s Jade Gresham is one whose value has probably fallen in recent years.

There is a lack of durability and while he’s a great contest player, he is not a bona fide midfielder.

Ross Lyon playing him mainly forward hasn’t helped this.

He’s a $550-$600k max contract player.

Tom Doedee was in great form and rolled the dice as a free-agent, but has sadly done an ACL.

I’m sure Adelaide will honour the original deal they had for him, but it would be understandable if other clubs interest cooled and with it, the possibility of a big pay-day.

What a shame we did not get Derek Hall to 100 games.... His son is handy left footer. Would have been a nice father son add.

PROLIFIC ball-winner Clay Hall led the Western Australian response on Saturday as the Black Ducks overpowered South Australia at Optus Stadium to get their first win of the under-18 championships.

Hall was outstanding at the coalface with 33 disposals, nine clearances and seven inside 50s in a best afield display that will further enhance the Peel Thunder draft prospect's reputation.

While the 18-year-old did the dirty work for Western Australia in the 28-point win, highly touted wingman Aiden O'Driscoll provided the class and outside speed to break open the Croweaters with 20 disposals and 12 marks.

The elephant in the room is that we did, in fact, play all four of them on the only occasion all were available this year.

(Matt Scarlett, Tom Lonergan, Harry Taylor & Andrew Mackie also say hi.)

SDK played forward in the first half for no real impact

In the 3rd quarter SDK went back, J. Henry went forward and when Ratugolea was subbed out injured it was O. Henry who went back

The 4th quarter was the first time we played our premiership defenders all together in the backline

So yes, all 4 may have played in the same game but they didn't all play in defence - kinda like the coaches acknowledging that it was going to be a juggle to fit all 4 within that set up

That was also against the dogs who are stacked with talls though. I doubt it is feasible matchups wise to do it every week.

Are we in Reid ear already? I doubt we are strong in his ear ... but id say we would make sure we are on good terms with him and his management. On the TV this morning I see that Cornes is projecting he will be threatening to a club like West Coast that ... draft me if you want but after two years I will be looking for a way out.

If he does get drafted to West Coast .. then Id say Geelong would try to position themselves for 2025.

But the win by WA in the U18's .. surely that must have them thinking about adding 4 local kids that will hang in thru the next few years that is going to be tough.

Than means they trade P1... and under certain circumstances Reid could land at North, Ess, GWS maybe even Melb.

Any recruitment will be very difficult to get him. certainly extremely expensive in draft picks. 3 R1 picks?

I see it a bit differently. I know there are exceptions but mostly one gets what one sees at another club. Could Sweet become a top liner at Geelong? Maybe but id bet more that he would be a VFL player most of the time. If you can find that player thats unloved and under appreciated...like Cameron at Syd then its a huge win.

If he is not good enough to be the ruck at the Dogs, there has to be a question if he would be good enough at geelong. Now he has English to get past..so one would need to carefully access him at the lower level and what he has done when in the dogs side. Played 11 games. He is probably a money ball type. What in particular appeals to you. I suspect he is almost a DFA. Both he and Flynn present as less than Tdek in my opinion.

On the "we only want Tom because of Sam" thing. Id say that we need to add the type of player Tom is. A ruck that is ready to go..mid 20's is ideal. If we cant get him then we move on. Id try to get Flynn as he has now been passed by Briggs. He is a FA, he is 26 next year and has played 30 idd games that you could access him on.

Recruiting in system talent its more about if the talent wants to come to your club. If Tom wants our club because of location, because of his brother, because of our culture and we need his type then we are lucky to have magnet type of player like Sam. Lets face it , its not unheard of to draft and trade in players that have relationships. Blitz might not have been a geelong player without having Guthrie.

If we could get Darcy Parish to select us as Free agent becuase were were willing to add Ry Matherson as a FA then id do it.

Then only time you have to wonder about our judgements(imo) is at draft. The player is not involved. Would we have drafted Clark if he was nit a GeelongFalcon local etc.? We would have drafted Ollie Henry.. so maybe we could say with a lot of Falcons.. we would draft them if they were not Falcons.
Was about to like this ... until I got to Matheson ... noooooo ...
I'm not entirely against companion ponies (although Henderson, who arrived with Danger, always seemed to me over-rated). But I watch a lot of brisbane games and he is a fringe player at best; nothing I have seen of him on the field tells me he would be good for our culture. If Joel Selwood was prepared to humiliate a former Falcon on the playing field (with his mock goal celebration) then perhaps he knew something ...

He is a throw away FA. No different to DHouse. They were mates in the Falcons. If thats the difference between getting Parish and not then I be willing to bring him in. Been done many times. I think Davenport was on Geelong list as Abletts mate? Certainly JJ being brought to Geelong was Dangerfield influenced. If not Parish's want then I think there are better options.

Matheson is big NO - can get the ball at VFL level but is not a polished footballer. We need mids with dash and skill and that is not Matheson.
