As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Melbourne are trying to get Harley Reid.

Would they take our pick 7/8 for 15 and 24 and use 5 and 7/8 as well as a F1 to get the #1 pick?

It's something Nth would think about if they received pick 2 for McKay.

Its going to be very very hard to get a trade done for him/P1 imo. Before bids obviously ...but 5 and 8 and a Fr1 for a top team? ... I'm still not sure they would do it.

15 and 24 ... probably see us in the zone for Stevens and trading a pick for someone we like...

From memory off the top of my head, I've heard this:

- Disharmony amongst the playing group

- 'Casual racism' directed at indigenous players, particularly Tarryn Thomas (Can't believe this is still an issue in 2023)

- Senior players essentially just happy to be there for the paycheck. Don't really care about the results as the losing culture is so embedded into the club now and they don't feel like it's their responsibility to change it. Key culprits are allegedly their two captains.

- Real party/piss up culture amongst the group. Similar to the above, it's very much a 'Win, lose, who cares? We're getting paid either way' sort of thing.

Again, all just rumours....but if any of it is true, would it really surprise anyone? That's 3 straight spoons and 4 years of genuinely pathetic football.

That last one would be an issue at a lot of clubs I'd say. Young, immature men with celebrity status on a huge amount of money rarely ends well.

I think people have very quickly forgotten the form Smith was in during 2021 and the SF/PF, and that he was even better in 2022. His drop off this year hasn't even been that bad, 2023 Smith would be one of our better players.

He apparently wants to leave to play more midfield, if we can get him at reasonable cost absolutely do it.
His career is definitely split into two halves right now. Pre and post being caught with drugs.

He just hasn't been the same since the suspension, and I suspect there's more to that than has been reported.

Whether it be a fracture in trust between club/player, or he's simply tired of hearing the same voices around him, it definitely looks like he needs a fresh start.

The Dog's just don't seem like a club that can maximize talent, both as a club and individual player. That list has been one of the best in the game for years now, particularly through the midfield, and it just hasn't stood up.

Something's gone on there since 2016, and there's been rumours galore...but he needs a change.

McStay is a pretty good player, while Frampton and Markov struggle to get a game when Collingwood has few injuries.

Part of the problem with Kolo is that he is a defender who often takes an important opposition forward. If you have to play an ordinary player you want them to be somewhere where they're not going to be too costly, which is NOT there. We need those guys to be reliable and dependable, and he's not.

To be frank, he's just not up to those jobs most of the time. I reckon that if you go back over his career, you'll find that his opponent is often the one who tears us a new one (I'll admit I don't have any stats for that, it's based on observation). And at his age, if he's not there now, he's never going to be.
100% this, he's the clear weak link and has been for his career. Still get nightmares seeing kolo on Dusty as he tore us up in the 2020 grandfinal

No defender in the league was going to stop Dustin in that game just as no midfield in the league was going to deny Dangerfield in last year’s GF. Sometimes you’ve just got to accept when someone is too good on the day.

Do Bevo and the coaches party themselves?
Or is it Senior players.

Just about the last thing I want is the Dons having a crack at McKay.

He honestly might as well stay at Norf... Dons are a rabble and Norths kids are going to be unreal in a couple of years.
If I was Ben McKay, I'd be choosing Sydney in a heartbeat... would be on good money, plus the Swans list is far better than Essendon

It can irk you as much as you like but the fact is all of those NGA and compo picks will be before ours
If we had pick 2 it’s irrelevant but we don’t, so you take that in to account.
So would Sydney swap 12-22 for 8
No they wouldn’t
Players. Aren't. On. The. Open. Market.

Pick 8 is pick 8 from what's available.

But every pick 8 holds a different value. I’d prefer the 8th best kid in the draft class as opposed to the 15th best because we couldn’t access 7 of them.
I feel like I've lost a few brain cells tonight.

Is it a full moon outside?

If we had pick two we still wouldn't be getting the second best kid in the draft.

He's. Off. The. Table.

I’ll play your stubborn game mate
I agree the GC NGA are off the table
But if north get priority access from the afl for Sanders that’s a kid who’s meant to be on the open market
If Mckay leaves and gets band 1 aswell as Parish there’s another 2
So our pick 8 gets us the 11th best kid on the market
You talk about losing brain cells, I’ve got a migraine explaining this

Why does this false narrative continue to get life breathed into it…

Martin didn’t tear Kolodjashnij a new one that match - he kicked 1 goal against JK

He also then kicked goals when:
  • Breaking an attempted Blicavs tackle while Dangerfield watched on
  • Brekaing an O’Connor tackle
  • Touhy ignored him in a marking contest and he picked up the ball that went over the back

I’m not saying Kolodjashnij had a good match, but he’s not the only one responsible for what Martin did that night

catempire - I thought this false narrative had died down as it had been a good 6 months since it was discussed, but now it’s been bought up 2 in the matter of a few weeks. Must be that Kolodjashnij is going thru a rough patch, so time to pile it on, even if not true

Ah the ol' 'Pick is worth less because it's lower but draftees aren't accessible so it doesn't matter anyway', argument.

After going through this a zillion times, I've come up with a visual analogy, to help those who don't seem to quite grasp it.

You line up at a theater, and people get given tickets based on when they arrived (draft order on draft night after Trade, NGA, FS, Compo, Academy locks order in).

You walk into the theater one by one in order, and you go to to choose your seat. When you enter the theater, you notice that there are varying rows in different areas of the theater that all have 'Reserved' signs on them (NGA/FS/Academy/Compo, picks).

These reserved signs are all over the theater, and most are in the best spots, but there are still a fair few good seats left. You take the one just behind the row of reserved seats in the best position (open draft).

As more people filter in, they have to avoid the reserved signs too, and end up with crappier and crappier seats as the queue gets towards the end (draft order pushed back).

*************

Due to people purchasing their seats in advance due to different rules that apply to them - VIP's, people who had something to do with the movie, competition winners etc. - those reserved seats are not available to the general public. They might be able to grab one of the good seats if no-one shows up (bid not being matched), but largely, they have to take what is available to them in the open market.

Those seats were never available to them, so they shouldn't be acting as if they ever had a shot at attaining them. Same goes with the open draft vs bidding on players that are essentially 'pre listed', or outside the draft mechanisms available to the rest of the league.

Obviously BSmith is contracted. The only way he is not at the Dogs next year is if they are happy to let him go...

So thats either a deal thats too good to ignore or they want him out and want to go a different way.

The also have points to consider. The kid Croft may or may not be called out before P17 (bris pick)

Our picks would certainly be before he is called. If we could find a way to get enough points, maybe they could be persuaded to add that to the deal 17.

Smith and 17 <> P8 and points. P29 (Sav) and maybe we have to find another pick or reach into next years draft to get a R3 this year

So .. Parish (not convinced but lets play this game) + BSmith + draft kid at 17 . We still take a couple of late picks ..where we look at list need

Bravo.

Sounds like you might have as That. Wasn’t. My. Point.

The value of our pick, if we trade it, is affected by the number of F/S, NGA, Academy prospects available in the draft.

That's all well and good but I was responding to the part where you indicated our pick 8 will move to pick 12 due to NGA bids ... that was the point of my reply.

The points value is irrelevant.

Even though we are more than 3 months from the draft, who are the most likely to be available around picks 7-10. I've seen a little bit of Caddy and he looks a player but I don't really know of any others.

Smith and 17 for 8 is a trade I don't mind
