Good friday is a no brainer - childrens hospital

I think both the anzac and dreamtime game are giving less than they should

The children's hospital is separate from the day itself, the AFL owes it nothing.

There is no way the two will not get tied together. The appeal is a melbourne instituion and its on c7.

Christianity stole it's holiday dates from the pagans.

I guess that cake is only for religious people.
Who cares what it's origins were? The fact is it now represents the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus Christ to a vast number of Australians. That is why we have a holiday. If you don't believe in that, that's fine. However, why should we have a holiday for nothing? You could say it's for the RCH but that is only for Victoria and only for the Friday. Why should we have the Monday off? Your logic and reasoning still didn't answer my point.

Public holidays are earnt just like annual leave and sick leave, you get paid X amount of money to work X amount of days. Thats why casuals don't get paid for them, they get paid more than full time workers instead.

I'm not sure why you think the good lord has anything to do with it and why people should have to believe in fairy tales in order to be paid the money they've rightfuly earnt.

Who said anything about believing in fairy tales? I am indicating that we should be living under a government with no religious bias, then we should not be having a Good Friday holiday or an Easter Monday holiday. These holidays in the Northern hemisphere welcome the coming of new life as in spring. Why call them easter holidays if nobody believes in them anymore?

My point is they should not be religious holidays. They should be called something else. It then doesn't matter if we play football or any other sport on them. If they are to be religious holidays, then they should be respected and as Good Friday represents the death of Jesus, then society must respect that and no sport played on them.

And further to the point, public holidays ARE NOT like other leave. That is pure rubbish. Public holidays can be added (grand final Friday) or taken away (Show day) by the Government. We have no entitlement to them as we do with annual and sick leave. Completely different beasts if you hadn't noticed.

They are still factored into full time workers salary or wages. Hence why casual workers don't get paid for them.

If there weren't any, full time workers would would be paid more.

Religion on BF. This shall be fun
It shouldn't be discussed. I agree.

However, people should be more respectful towards peoples beliefs rather than call them fairy tales. I'd like that person to have the guts and walk into a Mosque and tell all in there that their beliefs are fairy tales. If they can do that then I'll say they are not biassed.:D

Who needs guts these days when you can post anything you like with the anonymity of an internet forum.

So it's just the name then? Religious people can call it Good Friday and Easter Monday and the rest of us will call them public holiday Friday and public holiday Monday? Or we can just accept that as we increasingly become secular/diverse as a population, that the name will stick but the day means less to more people. It's just a ******* name that's easy to say and everyone gets...

It'll get tied together because of 7, if someone else had the rights it wouldn't.

My point was you want to dictate what people can and can't do because it's a "religous' day, even though the relugions in question stole it. Though it's hardly surprising to see someone in the side of religion engaging in bigotry.

As for why we should have a holiday, it's been pointed out that we get so many a year and the dates of which are not going to change just because society is evolving beyond believing in fairytales. Hell Christmas is a religous holiday but these days is far more significant within its Westernised context than its religous one.

Does it really?

It supplied one of the most significant managers of the Appeal itself in former grand final, Jeff Crouch. Owes it plenty through him and his legacy alone.

Who?

Why? Why do you think that should be the case?
Why should people 'respect' those that follow religion any more than those that follow 'cults'........which in effect are really one of the same.
Are we also selective as to which 'followers' and their beliefs we should respect? Mormons? Scientologists? Janists?
It shouldn't be discussed? No........it's all too frightening and we should avoid at all cost. Just 'respect' instead. FMD!

Friday football? Sounds like a good idea. Bring it on.

People who believe in the sanctity of the day are welcome to abstain from the football, but they've got no right to tell other people what they can and cannot do.

It's really that simple. We live in a secular society.

Actually they don't by far and large but the media can hijack the argument and cite bullshit like:

1. It allows more time for families to spend time together.
2. It's good to have a day without football.
3. We should respect others' religions.........and so on.

Don't bullshit us and don't sell some stupid notion you've woken up with today.
Some of these guys have no sincerity, integrity nor....respect for the argument.

Great post. The world has crime and murders because of religions racisms patronisms. Because of these dividing hateful things we had to create money. Money then took the game to a whole new level of dividing people. We shouldnt respect anything that keeps the word backwards and in the dark ages. Wars and fighting about fictional books written by cavemen tongain control. Far out. How dumb can we be?
Imagine the world without these things?? Wed have robots working for us we wouldnt have crime. None. Because everyone would be fed and be on equal level. We can change but it starts by tearing down this BS system first. RESPECT? Respect what? Elitise w***ers?

And where did I specify respect a religion more than a "cult"? You need to see an eye specialist or go back to school and learn English comprehension.

It just so happens that our whole way of life was set up by people that largely had Christian beliefs. That is FACT. We enjoy freedoms that other nations only dream of because of this. The fact you can write just about anything on these forums without harsh penalties is because of our this background. Our way of life was not set up by Mormons or Scientologists or Janists, so they are not relevant to the discussion of Good Friday.
