Goodwin Captain

Congratulations to Simon Goodwin, the right person to lead the club for the next years. Also well done to Ben Rutten and Nathan Van Berlo.

I feel the right person to lead the club has been selected, and now either Van Berlo or Rutten will be a smoother transition into the job in a few years time.

Congrats to Goody...... - he was the obvious choice.

Good to see vB lurking in the leadership group - waiting to take the Club to the next level of galactic dominance

Well Triggy was very impressed with the size of vB's arms.... :D

Obviously big enough to carry us all.

Well you can't be suprised. Was the one always most likely going to be captain. Will do a great job. VB or Rutten are surely earmarked future captains. I woudl think Once Goody retires VB will be the one.

Last night at our AGM a question was raised about making sure we keep players such as van Berlo, Knights and Maric and the answer from Trigg was that we will make sure that they don't come out of contract.....

I really hope we have thought about Tippett and the Gold Coast team. If he delivers and becomes a quality player we want to make sure he is not out of contract around 2009.

The playing group picks the captain, so do you think you know better than the playing group?

I don't claim to know anything. I do not agree with the majority of the playing group, even if it was a majority. The anti-Goodwin vote could have been split. Also, if they followed the procedure from last year, players have to vote in front of the playing group and state reasons. It would be very hard to go against the grain in front of the group. This mode of voting seems to encourage the conservative choice and I believe (as does it seems the football dept believes) that now is a time to be progressive and forward-thinking.

Beyond that general approach that I believe the club should be taking now (and really should have been taking since the end of 2007) my reasons for not liking Goodwin as captain have been previously stated and I don't need to bring them up again. Search if you must.

So why have many of the other AFL clubs followed us into this type of procedure? Geelong being one of them that instigated our leadership program this past season. That tells me we are progressive and forward-thinking when we were one of the first to embrace this and others are copying.....

I can see where you're coming from re the voting process, especially as the younger/newer players may conform to the group. But generally in large group situations, and I believe with the positive and generally open vibe you get from the Club, I don't think conformity would have been a great issue.

Just because its a new approach, doesn't make it progressive or future-oriented.

I'm broadly in favour of allowing the players a role in determining the shape of the club, but this is one measure of which I am sceptical.

Anyone else having trouble watching the afc video with Goody, Truck and vB? I'm being asked for user name and password for bigpond. Doesn't usually happen.

This likely to be controversial but I think Van Berlo's elevation to the leadership group is premature. He might be a future captain but has he really earned it yet? 2 and a bit years of senior football, about 50 games, I cant recall more than 1 really outstanding one (v Chad Cornes last showdown)

2 things

1. I think on performance we vastly overrate him. I think he will be a good AFL players, play 200 games but there are many 21 year olds of similar quality in the AFL. I'm all for him becoming a star don't get me wrong, but he is a long way off that yet. Knights better in 07 (in a different role)

2. I know Scott Thompson made a mistake in the off season (Goody's made 1 or 2 also) but he demonstrated great on field leadership in 07, 18 Brownlow votes, miles ahead of VB for mine as a leader

I guess the Club, and players, don't just see leadership on field but also around the rooms and on the training track. Really its only the players, coaching staff and other people down at the Club who see first hand the leadership displayed by individual players. Whilst van Berlo has generally had a solid year and definitely improved on field, I guess its also what he's been doing off field which saw him included in the leadership group.
