Opinion Have the MCC and the AFL ruined the MCG?

Fair bit of sooking going on here. The G exists to hold large events (50k +) and does a very good job of it. We're only 12 rounds into the footy season and there's already been 15 such games there, ranging from 55k to 95k. So there's more than one a week.

12 of those games were 60k+ so there's not another AFL stadium in the country that could have hosted them.

Plus two Ed Sheeran concerts with 110k people each there. That couldn't happen anywhere else.

It's very well located, being central without having to go into the CBD, and well serviced by transport. Parking isn't even that bad if you choose to drive.

The capacity means you can get a decently-priced seat at the vast majority of events. As for how it looks... well the old configuration looks nice in pictures I guess, but try living with it. The Olympic and Ponsford Stands generally meant a range of either searing sunburn or getting drenched on shitty wooden benches. The toilets and other facilities were old and shitty, and too few in number. It took ages to get in to or out of. And the old members stand was shot and urgently required upgrading.

There was an obsession to get a 100,000 capacity which isn't needed. 90,000 would be fine.

Ahh, the good ol’ days.
Prior to 1991, you could rock up and sit ANYWHERE outside the MCC area. Back when it really was the People’s Ground.
Nothing corporate in sight in the old Southern Stand.

It was a fantastic place to go as a kid going to the football, you could find a seat among a crowd of 60,000 without any trouble, then at half time go for a walk the entire length of the Southern stand, buy a pie and comeback without some goon telling you to sit down and go back to your seat. The MCG was much simpler to navigate around than it is today.

Geelong is installing safe standing in the new stand. Hope the AFL/MCC takes notice.

Would be ideal for the bottom tier, especially for high capacity games (ANZAC, Finals, etc). Could be installed in full bays or just the back half behind those sitting.

This is really what it boils down to now. The constant assault on the fan by advertising, the loud and obnoxious music at the breaks, the embarrassing "Fan Engagement".
Yes!
The gambling is the bit that annoys me. I don’t have a problem with gambling itself but I paid $100 to see a final and spent 40 minutes lined up for a drinkie at the only bar selling drinkies and the screens inside the bar weren’t even showing the game, they had horse races on instead.

Vibe was fd too, arguments everywhere with people cutting in line, punters ripping into the staff for the poor service.
All I wanted was a pepsi!!!

Yes!

Has been used for quite a while in Europe. Perfect way to increase capacity for the big games. Make the last 10+ rows on the bottom level of the ‘G safe standing. AFL will probably object because it does nothing for the corporates, so of course they’ll be all for pulling down a 35 year old stand and replacing it.

Yes. The MCG is the Centrepiece of AFL/Victorian Government Sporting corruption. ..... And outside its size, there's nothing particularly great about the stadium either. It's bog average TBH.
What makes a great stadium?

I've had the luxury of visiting some of the big shiny new stadiums in the US that some are raved about while others are s**t on as being poor. The interesting thing I found was that for the average attendee the poor one's weren't that bad while the one's raved about as trend setter stadiums weren't real much better than the poor one's.

IMO the Shane Warne stand still stacks up well with most modern stadiums but does have some flaws particularly with the upper levels with concourse space and amenities.

The fact is more people go to the football today partly because of the way the MCG and modern stadiums are built. Yes the old grounds had a certain character that lacks in the concrete monstrosities they build today. But most lacked a comfort people expect when paying for entertainment in this day and age.

Would be nice to play there once in a while instead of getting the Hobart/Launceston/Ballarat/Darwin/Cairns/Alice Springs/Humpty Doo runaround.

It’s a great stadium. The seating, views and surface etc etc are all fine.

The two areas it could improve is general admission area hospitality and entering/exiting the ground. (Dunno if lanes are the answer but everyone walking head on into each other does T really worK)

There’s a massive video screen under the seating at the punt Rd end that hasn’t worked all season.

Yep, and you could watch a game of real football. Not the glorified keepings off crap they're dishing up these days.

Back then as soon as the cheer squads put the banners up there was a constant buzz. Passion from the supporters. These days you could hear a pin drop once the game starts.

I'm with Toumpy, sooner watch it in my man cave or at the pub. The AFL can G F!!

Marvel is a plastic shithole. Comic book branding. No goddamn natural light. Suitable for minnow clubs only.
certain marvel tenants will take offense to that.

North Melbourne fans saved the AFL from going broke by playing sunday dead slot games on a weekly basis lol

Who would have thought that South Australia being too poor to put stands the whole way around their ground would have accidently made it a point of difference.
