I grew up a fanatical Essendon supporter, then worked in the TAC Cup for a number of years - from there I was probably most interested in the players I had been involved with (one of which is now the Essendon president). I then moved to Canberra for a long time and didn’t see as many games (I became a fanatical Canberra Raiders fan) but was a foundation member of the Giants.
I have since moved to Brisbane and live just down the road from the Gabba. I just love the way the Lions play and do feel a real connection with them. In the two years I have been here they have won two premierships and I just love the way the club goes about it. Essendon have been so poor on and off the field that I do feel I have lost a lot of the passion for the club. Especially the off field stuff - obviously the drugs saga but also appointing CEOs from the board, not once but twice just astounds me - I can handle losing to a point but not when so much of it is self inflicted by poor decisions.
In many ways it almost feels at the moment like Essendon and Brisbane are in different divisions, so they aren’t really competing again each other. Essendon play Brisbane this weekend but really the result is known. Of course I want Essendon to win, but probably not at the expense of Brisbane’s chance of a three peat.
At Gather Round I made the decision to go to Barossa to watch the Lions rather than Essendon v Melbourne. Part of me regretted it after what happened, but I thought the North v Lions game was really good.
I guess in summary I still love Essendon but I don’t respect it, whereas I respect Brisbane even if I don’t love them.
(that’s not even talking about me also being a Suns member)
