How do you fix Melbourne?

One idea we could all have is go and watch Casey the next couple of weeks.

Any Melbourne player starring there clearly should be being picked to play in the Melbourne side and kept there until form from others in the Casey line-up justifies their potential selection.

For what it's worth, they play Frankston at home today.

Although we have been SHIT we have at least shown a steady improvement since Dimma was appointed, which has included a shift in culture at the club.

The Tigers also have a huge supporter base (currently over 50,000 members), with equally huge attendances at games.

TBH I haven't see any fundamental changes at the Demons which would give members hope since Garry Lyon anointed Neeld as coach.

(It's my opinion that Lyon should be banned from giving advice to your club and to stick to "comedy" on footy shows, and let the running of multi-million dollar football organisations to experienced professionals with integrity who know what they are doing)

The league needs to keep clubs with a rich history such as the Demons intact, and I'd hate to see a relocation or merger due to an dysfunctional board.

The other thing that was clear to me last night is that the team is no longer playing for the jumper, or the coach.

I have decided to look at the Melbourne Bombers match since MFC has become a human interest story!!

So I am looking at them and thinking there is not a lot there but at times they are trying. That surprised me.

Anyway would you rather watch Lyon do comedy or an AFL match with Melbourne in it. Personally I choose the latter, not sure how Lyon gets a gig TBH

Pederson and Gillies are already proven failures and were stupid choices. And while Watts cops all the criticism, Sylvia deserves it far more. Produced even less, and that's from someone that should be leading this club.

For me, to fix melbourne, I would start like this:

Firstly, I would be talking to Paul Roos and Tom Harley to come in and look over the club and provide an independant view of the culture and overall structure of the club, and ways they can implement a successul culture into the club.

Secondly, I would put consistantly under-performing players like Jamar, Sylvia and Watts down to Casey and not bring them back till they are dominating at that level, as a quality AFL player should. They should have a set criteria that they have to hit, including 1%ers, tackles, sacrificial acts etc. Every week they don't hit their benchmarks, they stay a further 2 games in the twos. If this stretches to next season, then so be it. If they don't get anywhere near those levels, then they play in the casey twos until they hit the benchmarks. This isn't just limited to the above 3, but any senior player.

Thirdly, scrap the process's of footy and make every player accountable for a player on match day for the next 3 weeks. If that player goes to the bench, so do you, if that player switches into the middle, then so do you. You have one player to manage, you have to beat said opponent.

Fourthly, I would ban all past players from coming into the rooms, from being a part of the group. Too many mixed messages.

Fifthly, I would ignore any advice from the sports scientists, and start 6:30am 'Tom Hafey training' every day barring Saturday and Sunday. These players have got to hurt and hurt and hurt. Any time someone is late, then they lust start 15 minutes earlier the next day and every day there on.

Lastly, I would also make every player get a job, that they must keep all season, and must donate all salaries earnt to charity. And not some glorified office job with a sponsor. I mean waiting, or a trade or something like that. They have to be shown what their lives could be like if they don't do what they should be on the footy field. Show them that they really have life pretty good as an AFL footballer.

End of the year, all major positions, like President, football manager, CEO etc must reapply for their positions to ensure you have the best people in the roles
Sounds like a great starting point to me:thumbsu:

Gameday just showed a graphic.

The Dees are 4-20 under Neeld with an average losing margin of 57 points.

That is ridiculous. I know Melbourne supporters were happy to point out that we lost our last 10 games last year by an average of around 10 goals, and that we were the worst performing team in the AFL for that period, but wow.

It's just lucky that it's a tv dominated industry and Neeld doesn't look like a hobo, right?

Melbourne picked up Sylvia and McLean the first time they tanked. What a disaster

Supposedly Lynden Dunn's mum called sen last night and said melbourne heighrachy should be shot.
Well that's what I think I heard on game day. How strange.

Other than Silvia, Davey and the couple of washed up hired guns they recruited there is no real experience. Neeld and Craig need to be removed as they have a losing culture about them. The way Neeld was talking he was trying to be more of a parent than a coach. The players are supposed to be professionals and get paid good bucks to be.

Probably the worst thing that is happening is the bandaid solutions, Just doing "enough" to keep their jobs/spot in the team.

Really think they should have gone with Wines. Two uncompromising mids, great mates...could have really galvanised the place

Tapscott and Trengove were and are best mates.

The thread is how to fix Melbourne, not how to feast off their carcass.

it was actually in response to a post that was above the post you quoted re: other clubs circling around their players cause they are AFL standard

I agree. We got Libba and Wallis at the same time, and they set up our future midfield. Melbourne had the chance to do the same.
Toumpas is going to be a very good player, but you can't buy that close relationship that two players have. Would have been invaluable going forward.

Yeah they should have gone for Wines because he's got that competitive nature that would make him excel at any club.

Toumpas is a good prospect but I don't think he will flourish at Melbourne.

Yeah despite the crap going on at least Viney and Wines would have had a bond share and draw on.

there doesn't seem to be a lot of substance about them though as a group. just a moving train wreck!!

WIth father-sons you mean? Well they got Viney...

Point is regardless of father/son drafting they could have had Wines. So the fact that we got both with f/s is irrelevant because Melbourne could have got them both anyway.

Yes, but we still had to use our first two picks. Melbourne could have used their first two picks (excluding the Hogan and Dawes picks, since they traded them away, obviously) on Wines and Viney.

Watts and Gillies have their beard bond. They should know it's a tv dominated industry and beards are not cool - their supporters do.

If you ever needed proof of the importance of a leader in defence and an organiser then last night was it. I'm sure plenty of people on here saw that footage of the 6 blokes standing around after a bombers goal getting pissed with each other looking like someone had given them each a rubiks cube. They had no ****ing idea what they were doing.

If I had to start somewhere I would do whatever it takes to acquire a couple of those guys. It would take a lot but stop gobbling up draft picks like a little piggy and use them to acquire a defensive general with a bit of campaigner in them. Otherwise that backline will not develop.

Frawley has suffered as a talented young defender because he is being asked to play this role as well as concentrating on nullifying his opponent AND providing rebound.

IMHO it's a large part of why we got Goddard.
If you watch him off the ball, he's taking a lot of the set-up & directing traffic (yelling & pointing) away from Fletch. First year or two he'll play more midfield & forward, then we'll settle him back there as the classy organiser, a la Burgoyne's role at the Hawks.

I'm not quite sure whether Rivers used to do that at Melbourne? - but it's abundantly clear that no-one else has stepped up.
