Need I elaborate really? How good is a game of NFL when it goes to extra time? So insanely intense, like almost nothing that Aussie Rules can produce.
Tonights game was like those games.

When its two 4-10 teams its boring af and most fans/broadcasters would prefer a draw so they can just go home.

It's the fact this was a knock-out final which really made the drama. Extra time between 14th and 12th in Round 17 is not going to be like this.

I'm the opposite actually. I often find OT in the NFL to be disappointing. The games 4 qtrs is more exciting than the OT imo.
I agree. The 2 previous extra time finals ended in 3-4 goals wins. While they were good games they are hardly memorable.

This time it ended in a great finish

The 2nd best finish to a game this year was McGovern kicking a goal after the siren to draw

Am I the only one who finds American football very boring to watch? There is so much dead time in that game.

Not sure why we feel the need to emulate the NFL to be honest.

I actually got home very late last night and happened to see about 10 minutes worth on 7mate. I simply watched out of curiosity to see if there is anything in the game appealing to me than the last time I looked about a decade ago.

I actually saw a touchdown in that time but still boring as batshit to me.
Essentially just big game of human chess where not much happens for most of the time and they always preparing for next chess move play which last about 10 to 20 seconds at a time it seems and minutes of nothing between that.
In that way it is similar to our cricket which if you not grown up with the game must seem very weird and not much going on.

Anyway, the yanks seem to like it so good luck to them.

The rule book states that if the scores are level after extra time, the siren doesn't blow until someone hits the lead. So here's my question: Why didn't they just not blow the siren until someone hit the lead in the game proper, and avoid the extra time? The AFL has me questioning my own sanity so damn often, I bet I'll end up in therapy. Yes, get rid of the draw during the season. At least one supporter group should leave the game happy. What's the point of everyone leaving nonplussed?

Great idea if your team has a wind advantage.

Why does a draw need to be a thing if more excitement can be generated from a cut-throat game of footy?
That's a large part of it, it was a cut-throat game. In a regular season game the extra time would add very little, if anything. Personally I find the possibility of the third result is an enticing one itself (when viewing as a neutral).

Keep the draw in the regular season. If you are 9th and end regular time with a draw against the clear top team you deserve the two points. Just as if a minnow side draws with a good team they deserve them too.

Draw and maybe make the 8 by those 2 points, or play extra time, possibly with 1 or 2 players only left on the bench and get beaten and miss the 8.

pfft, yes it was wonderful but why should it have anything to do with the home and away season. we average a draw a year and it seldom is earth shattering to club ladder positions. GWS had 2 this year, how would the season have been better if those games had been forced to a result.

Don't expect the coaches to thank you for keeping the players on the field for an extra roughly quarter of football just to try turn 2 premiership points into 4 or none.

In the H&A you have 4 quarters in which to gain your advantage and secure the points. Depending on how good you are, you either get the points, concede them or share them. If you can't get the full points within four quarters then tough luck. Other teams in close matches, against whom your four quarter results are measured, don't get extra time and neither should you.

In finals, it's a different ball game; there are no points to win, concede or share. No percentage. There is no measure between your result and that of a team from another match. There's only a forward pathway on an ever reducing roster and for the next week to unfold, a winner must result. It's win or lose. That's all that matters.

Hence, extra time to achieve that result makes a lot of sense in one scenario, but not so much in the other.
