THe legit answer is that its to do with the proximity of the airport. The direction of the runway means that planes coming in fly almost directly over the CBD.

thats actually a pretty legitimate response

i got to see the first airbus a380 to take off from adelaide which went right over where used to work in the old treasury building. it felt like it only went over us by a few metres (but was probably a good 200m)

My impression of Perth beaches is that they always seem very windy. Weather seems to be fairly similar although it probably does get a little colder here and chicks well, all very subjective although with a larger population you probbably have more hotties, but also again probably more dogs.

Any rate you listed Hahndorf, Victor Harbor and some non discript steak house in Glenelg as your must see things to do which kind of leads me to think you don't know shit. Handorf is a shitty faux German town tourist trap, the only good thing about Victor is its proximity to Adelaide and the first tee at the golf course and Adelaide has a very good food/wine culture at far more reasonable prices than you'd find in Perth.

I have nothing against Perth, but Perthite's that come out and say Perth is soooooo much better than Adelaide are quite delusional. Perth is Adelaide, just newer and shinier, less cultured with the waft of new money blowing in with the Fremantle doctor. Good on em.

don't get me wrong - you are correct on shopping etc, but eating, you must be joking.

now I realise this comes across as be just beating Adelaides drums, so to give you an understanding of where I'm coming from, I've eaten in top class restaurants in every major city in the country and a many many places around the world - food bills of $400 - $1000 are no unusual for me and the missus - so I am willing top at least try to end restaurants which gives me some basis to make my judgements (I'm no food critic obviously)

Adelaide has some fantastic eateries and some top end ones which are outstanding - don't get me wrong, we don't have the population to sustain Michelin star restaurants but otherwise we are bloody well serviced.

Amazing and cheap places everywhere you go. Partly cos population but also the culture in melb I believe is an eat out one more, and the crap places just don't survive, due to the volume of good ones.

Gotta love the monthly 'which city is the best' thread. The best part of Adelaide is the Hills (amazing climate in spring/summer/autumn, albeit a bit cold and wet in winter) and the worst part is probably public transport. However, with the growth in the Tour Down Under over the last few years, cycling has experienced a massive boom in Adelaide. It's just disappointing that the increase in cycling commuters is outpacing the growth in cycling infrastructure. I have no doubt that if the government put in the money and effort to make Adelaide a more cycling friendly town then it could easily become a cycling mecca similar to Copenhagen

As with everything in marketing Adelaide, it has to be a niche market, be it cycling or education or the yarts. Adelaide neither has the population, nor the infrastructure to support a major global event, so it needs to concentrate on markets like these.

at the moment I'm in Melbourne. I spend half my year in the USA (am a musician do on tour a lot) when I filled it out I had been in California a year with no signs of coming home. At the moment I'm on Melbourne and loving it. Head back in October.

I think its more to do with the mining then anything else. Most of the mining engineers in Perth are South African and plenty moved over to Australia for work.

Just like how we have suburbs dominated by immigrants from certain countries, when white South Africans started to leave South Africa they choose places with their compatriots.
