Ok, so Heritage Round = WAFL derby round.

Just announced Round 9 will be Indigenous Round

We play the Saints on Friday night that round. I reckon we can show the AFL what real impact indigenous players can have, rather than the Kev and Terry show on the following night. Michael Long, Michael Mitchell and the Riolis have all retired haven't they.

Any other AFL rounds we can highjack and take over?

I do. I reckon it's awesome that there's going to be an Indigenous Round. We have 8 Aboriginal players on our list, and anything that pays tribute to these guys from a marginalised and largely vilified minority, making their way to become top-line professional athletes... is worthy of some respect.

I'll be unveiling my new avatar soon... can't wait! :thumbsu:

Jeff Farmer
Troy Cook
Roger Hayden
Des Headland
Antoni Grover
Michael Johnson
Clayton Collard
Calib Mourish

The Freo Brothers!! :thumbsu:

Surely we have the most out of any club (not only most aboriginal players but best indigenous talent ;) )

Essendon have 8 Aboriginal players also:
Lovett, Lovett Murray, Dempsey, Ryder, Davey, Jetta, Cole, D1ck.

(Ryder and Jetta are Freo boys, and there's a couple of other WA fellas in there too).

is there an indigenous all-stars game this year? i reckon the team would look something like:

FB: R.Hayden, A.Grover, D.Wirrpunda
HB: A.Mcleod, M.Johnson, G.Johncock
C: D.Headland , S.Burgoyne, D.Wells
HF: A.Davey, D.Motlop, D.Pearce
FF: J.Farmer, M.O'Loughlin, M.Williams

Rucks: A.Goodes, P.Burgoyne, C.Bateman

Bench: B.Pickett, P.Ryder, T.Cook, A.Lovett

Emergencies: C.Johnson, N.Lovett-Murray, E.Betts

+ Buddy Franklin.

How much token Indigenous appreciation propaganda do we need shoved down our faces?

I accept them just as I accept everyone else. We do not need to keep highlighting them because they are different.

What about an Irish round? an Italian round?..........

I agree, there is too many(Whens the Irish round:D).anzac round should be the only one but I'm not against clubs promoting the odd game for charity like the purple haze game.

Anzac Round and that's it. The clubs can keep their own charity games (we keep our len Hall and Purple Haze games) but this special round stuff is getting beyond the joke.

Replace Daniel Motlop with Lance Franklin and that looks pretty good

Might not have much height but you wouldn't want the recruiters death knell: lacks genuine pace, if you had to play against that team.
Especially in Darwin in February. Essendon will come back exhausted - good.

I agree totally. Imagine if an anglo-saxon round was introduced? There would be outrage, because it would be deemed as racist. The double standards are laughable.

If you blokes don't think there are serious issues within the general aboriginal community, and also don't believe that this sort of thing is a step in the right direction in alleviating many of those problems, I suggest you pack your families and go and live in another country, or open up your eyes and take a good look around you.

Indigenous round gets the big thumbs up from me, a great concept and another small way of repaying some of the debt that is owed to many of these people.

There is womens round. There is heritage round. There is Green shirt round (for the umps!).

It is all just marketing. It is a way for the AFL to highlight something that is linked to footy, and concentrate the media's attention on it for a week.

You can have whatever opinion you want about Indiginous issues, culture, welfare, equalities, rights, etc, but the bottom line is that they have contributed a heap to AFL footy - much more than their relative population size should have done. I would think that we are highlighting them because they have contributed so much, not simply because they "are different".

The thread was meant to be about how Freo is likely to steal the thunder of the AFL for that week as well, getting the big Friday night game, probably having more indigenous players than any other club and hopefully doing something either with the desert kids or Clontarf pre-game.

hear, hear!

Indigenous Australians (the original Australians) have it harder than any other minority group in this country. They are marginalised and have to work twice as hard as most other Australians to be recognised and to succeed in their chosen profession. Why? Simply because they are Aboriginal people.

Italians, Irish, Croatians of which I am one, can walk into a shop, a restaurant, down the street and people won't look twice. We go for a job and the worst we get is "how do you pronounce your name?". An Aboriginal person does the same and s/he carries with him/her 200+ years of discrimination which is built into Mr Joe Average's psyche.

I say we celebrate loud and proud the contribution that indigenous footballers make to this game. Never in a million years should you think that an Aboriginal Australian has it as easy as an Italian or an Irish Australian. Everyone else made the decision to come to this country (uninvited) somewhere in the last 200 years to better their lives - they've been here for 60,000 years.... We forced our culture and values onto them, we gave them no rights as citizens, we told them where to live, where to work, when to work, when they could get married, we took away their children....

And I can hear people saying "I didn't do it...don't blame me". But we are all a party to it, just by the fact that it didn't happen to us. We could vote, get married, go to work, have kids (and keep them) in blissful ignorance... and as long as it was happening to "them" and not to "us" - well we didn't really need to think much about it...

We have a lot to make up for the crappy way we treated them - and if this small gesture helps then I'm all for it.

I'm sure the Wiz, Dessie, Johnno, Grover, Hayden, Cookie, Collard and Mourish are open to it also... :)

It doesnt adress the problems in the indigenous community it just highlights the indigenous persons that have contributed and are contributing to Aussie Rules and the ones that have contibuted to society.

There is a difference between raising awareness of the problems in the aboriginal communities and recognising aboriginal contribution to football.

This is the AFL. They are raising awareness in their field, which is football, not trying to solve the world's social problems. They are giving an example of what kids can aspire to become, not telling them this is the be-all-and-end-all of life. Like I said, it's a small step in the right direction, that AFL has taken upon itself. Maybe if other enterprises got a bit more involved in similar projects there wouldn't be so many problems.

If this indigenous round inspires just one kid to turn his life around, then as far as I'm concerned it's a success.

I'd be the first to pay my money and go and see them play another team at Subiaco, what a treat!

it's good for footy and great for lovers of the game and what possible negative can come out of it?

By the way, the Wizz should be one of the first picked in the Indigenous Team Of The Century. Theres lot of good players in it but i'm yet to see one who rivals the Wizz in his position (jump off soap-box).
