Injury Report - Season 2024

ADEM Yze's match committee for this week's clash with Brisbane could be the quickest on record, with a potential low of just 26 players available.

AFL teams need to name a squad of 26 (23 in the team and three emergencies), and the Tigers may have come away from the weekend with an additional seven injuries across both the AFL and VFL.

The Tigers will be without Maurice Rioli jnr (syndesmosis), Sam Banks (concussion), Jack Graham (hamstring) and potentially also Seth Campbell (knee) and Tyler Sonsie (wrist) – all of whom played in the loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The VFL team didn't escape unscathed on Sunday, either, with James Trezise – on return from an ankle injury – suffering a concussion, and Jacob Koschitzke rolling an ankle.

If Liam Baker (corked leg) and Dylan Grimes (managed) are cleared to return, but all the above seven players are unavailable, Richmond's numbers would sit at 28.

Jacob Hopper (hamstring) remains at least a week away.

Category B rookie Oliver Hayes-Brown is currently playing with Old Ivanhoe in the VAFA competition (a level below VFL) while he builds his football experience, adding him to the unavailable 18.

Waalitj Marawar had fewer than 26 available players on two occasions in 2021 due to COVID-19 outbreaks, but due to the extenuating circumstances, were able to field top-up players sourced from the WAFL.

The Eagles also had to pick all 26 available players (inclusive of two category B rookies) in round eight last year, coincidentally against the Tigers.

On a few occasions in his mid-week pressers through April and early May, coach Adam Simpson said he had 24 or 25 players to choose from, meaning a handful of Eagles emergencies weren't fit to play.

The entire Richmond club has had a horror run over the past 12 months, particularly around re-injuries and soft tissue problems. Yze conceded the club had erred in naming Dion Prestia off a five-day break – the midfielder subsequently breaking down – while Graham has re-injured his hamstring after a week off.

Hopper injured his hamstring in his return from a knee injury, with strapping on the joint proving to be an issue throughout the half he played.

The Tigers' AFLW side also needed to dip into top-up players from the VFLW on several occasions late last year.

Richmond has the opportunity to select at least two players in the upcoming mid-season draft, given the season-ending torn ACLs suffered by Judson Clarke and Josh Gibcus.

Who’s that? You’ve lost me here

Dunno the Malaysian agent's name, but Tim 'the Beast' Fleming!

Don't feel any shame in your ignorance, mate, very few Tiger supporters are aware that we're actually the feeder club for a far more successful Malaysian side.

I dunno why there isn't a podcast about it...

Hopper was listed as 2-3 weeks recovery on the article from the 26th of April. At the time I thought it was bs as an ass covering exercise and the extent would be worse. We are now at 14th May and he is still listed at 2-3 weeks away. If he plays next week it will be a month since he did the injury. If he comes back in 3 weeks that's like 7 weeks for an apparent minor strain with a 2-3 week recovery. Such bs by the club here.

Sometimes it is just bad luck. I played in a country footy team in the 90's. One year maybe 1991 we were undefeated on top of the ladder half way through the season. By the time we got to the finals we had our 34th best player running out on the field, we had around 10 of our best 20 out injured and a few of us carrying niggling injuries. I recall I had not been able to train for weeks heading into the final, so had lost a lot of fitness. Some of our best fringe players were also injured.

There was no rhyme or reason to the injuries, but most of the key ones were long termers, broken leg, arms, collarbones, knee injuries, etc etc.

Other years around that we probably had a normal share of injuries. You cannot legislate for what is happening to Richmond at the moment.

Meehan wouldn't even be fit to run the fitness team for your local country club.

What do you think his specific weaknesses are?
Clearly it is conditioning of players and knowing how hard they can be pushed. A lot of the injuries appear to be either soft tissue, or stress related which would suggest that the players are working too hard.

Additionally, we seem to be rushing the players back too early, especially when they have a history of soft tissue injury. Lynch should never of been playing in the Sydney game on the basis that he over did him the week before due to the Gibcus injury. Though since Lynch hardly had a preseason Lynch should never of been out there to begin with. Lynch really should of had a preseason during the first couple of rounds and they target a return in our game against Melbourne.

I will hedge though, it could be that there has been a lot of pressure on him from the Footy Department that means that he has pushed the players because we think that we should be higher up the ladder than we should be. With all the pressure to perform to a top 8 side gone for 2025, our injury management may end up looking real peachy in the off season.

I think a big part of it would be this. Take the Prestia 5 day break example, I have almost no doubt it would've been Yze saying that he wants to play him and that he understands the risk. Graham the same.

The frequency of injuries across the entire team however would be more Meehan's wheelhouse.

Could the club have said to Meehan we need to crash or crash through? Maybe they said we want to players taken beyond normal limits because that is the only way we can contend, and if it goes wrong, well, we fancy the top end of the draft.

We just don't know. For all we know Meehan could have the full backing of the club to do exactly what he has done.
