The performance from Australia was quite simply, embarrassing.

If we continue to treat it like a joke, we might as well not bother playing, tonight was absolutely unacceptable.

The Irish went in fully prepared and picked their best team available.

The Aussies went in COMPLETELY uninterested, approached it like a picnic.

Disgraceful episode.

To pick a team like we did is shameful.

And they played like embarrasing marshmellows

What the F--K !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Represent Australia and you must put all in.

I would have shirtfronted everybody including the umpires to fire up the Aussies.

Edit extra : A few days later and re-reading this post which was written after watching the game with a few mates in a jovial mood,
I forgot to add that this match will be on You Tube forever, and the realities of the AFL, which is blo-dy tough and couragious, will show us getting bumped off the ball, falling over after minimal contact and looking very silly with skill, for many to joke about.

So if we try to showcase the reality of AFL footballers in our time, we cannot do this to show our great great grandchildren.

The first part I agree with.

If this has not been a deliberate tank, then surely its an indication of an utter lack of planning and care.

Why continue with something that no one bar the AFL admin seems to give a shit about.

Are you pretending not to care by posting in a thread about something you don't care about?

So posting in thread = caring about said sport does it?

I've seen that old chestnut on here a few times, highly illogical.

If I say I don't care that it's raining, does that mean I care because I'm then talking about the rain? No, it doesn't.

well actually we have a lot of players at home that didnt come due to club games and what not. only 1 player form the all-ireland winning team came and he is the goalkeeper.

This is what I was trying to get at unsuccessfully with my rant.

Although as I was also saying, regardless of what anyones perception of the series is, it' still embarassing to get flogged wearing an Australian guernsey. Whether we care or not. Do it properly or dont bother.

I disagree. Last year, most Irish fans were unhappy because our team were outshone by Australia at some of the basic skills that ARE part of our own game, like kicking the ball straight. We lost last year because we didn't play to our own strengths, and Australia showed that using the round ball was no longer an impediment to playing good footy.

I agree. Australia played extremely well and the Irish were inaccurate.

That's why I said that this year, Ireland decided to try harder, and it showed. Australia seem to have decided to forget what they've learned over the past few years, and also lost a bit of the passion that we thought you were famous for.

I agree. The Irish played better and were very accurate.
The Australians forgot the lessons of past and were extremely inaccurate.
They did seem to lack the preparation that is essential to master the round ball. Also I think we sold a bit of a pup with the aggression thing and aggression is part of our thing.

The Irish are to be congratulated. They couldn't have played any better.
Unfortunately our performance only fuels the fire of the games detractors.
Not taking anything away from the Irish but we're in a bit of a no win situation here.If we win it's because we're the big brute professionals playing the weak farmer amatuers. If we lose then the games an embarassment, it's the games fault and it should be stopped immediately.

Ah right yeah, the guy marking Donaghy I think. Same argument can be applied :p
Thing is, Nicoski just had an outstanding season with West Coast, and was one of the reasons for them pushing up into the top 4 last season. He may be rubbish at this shitty game, but his AFL career is just fine.

Sounds like our boys, Bernie and Dougy, were in the best 3 for the Aussies which is good to see.:thumbsu:

Right, because it was the Australians in that series always chucking the knees in, wasn't it...

Double standards at their finest.

A lot of our best players weren't available though because they were playing in their respective club championships.
That's nowhere near the best team we could put out.
I know it's the same for you guys but it's too easy to assume that it's our best team against your worst team.

Did anyone else hear Brad Green during the halftime break compare winning the IR to winning a flag?

Well it's not likely he'll get either after tonights game.

I didn't mind the game but not suprised with the result considering the mostly B graders. From my perspective, was good to see Mitch and Zac going at it, pity Setana wasn't playing as he's been known to have some agression for teammates. :)

How massive was that hit on Trengove though. Clean as a whistle, and rocked him into next week. You don't even see that in the AFL anymore.

It says alot about our game when you see bigger hits in the International Rules.

AFL is being murdered. RIP.

I suspect many Aus fans dont really see the old problems with how the IR rough stuff occurred in the past. When Danyle Pearce knocked out Graham Geraghty, nobody considered it a nasty tackle. The damage was done as Pearce swung Geraghty around and down hard into the ground. That's what concussed Geraghty. The fact he had been singled out in advance media coverage as a "target" for Aussie rough treatment added to the furore.

As an Irish fan of IR for a long time, I never wanted IR to become too sanitised. We also like a tough game, but just without the cynical pure dirt tactics that are not even a part of your own game. What would have happened to Chris Johnson if he tried that "clothes-line" in AFL? How about Matthew Scarlett's head punches? And the few times that an Irish player managed to effect a good tackle on an Aussie and pulled him to the ground, it often seemed the Aussie took it as an insult to his manhood and needed to retaliate in force.

Bottom line - many players on both sides claim they like the IR and want it to continue. It's easy to profess your support when you're own team are winning. Now that this Australia team, whether you think they are good or bad, really need a bit of support, are you going to turn your back on a team representing your country? Is that all you've got?
We all know the irish aren't a tough physical race(look at any world war) but this post is just embarrassing.

...The Aussies are a little hesitant- if we go in hard we'll be crucified by the media like we were last time. And unlike the irish who are amatuers and have jobs, playing footy is the Aussies job so you don't want to get injured.

I reckon it's the other way 'round, getting injured is par for the course for AFL players, treatment is immediate and fulltime, barometric chambers, ice baths etc. For the GAA players, an injury is far more serious because it interferes with work, it's a disaster for the self employed, a reason many local players give the game away in their '20s.

...Case in point is Wood: in an AFL game if he was tackled late like in the first quarter, he would not hesitate at all to fight the tackler ...

I reckon he didn't react because he wouldn't have in an AFL game. The tackle wasn't particularly late and didn't hurt him anyway, nothing like a full blooded AFL tackle. It was no later than occurs regularly in AFL games. When players react, they risk a penalty. Wood is trained not to over react.

The GAA players were better equipped for the game. Leaving aside round ball skills, they were faster, bigger, more adventurous and, interestingly, more aggressive than the AFL players. Bad move choosing a team of no names, for example, Murphy would have been a better choice than Wood and the foolishness of lack of a big forward was demonstrated by the impact that Donaghy had for Ireland.

As I understand it, the GAA left a lot of first choicers behind too. Historically, The AFL players only win when they go the biff. When you take that out of the equation, watching them struggle against amateurs makes you wonder why we shell out so much to pay them so highly.

Missed the Ireland v Australia game in the World Cup ? Never watched Hurling ? Missed last night's game ?

There have been 2 world wars. In the first, Ireland was still part of the United Kingdom. There were Irish battalions in the British army and individual Irishmen joined other branches of the British and Empire forces. Around 200,000 joined up, approximately 5 % of the population, from a country that immediately after the war went to war against the UK. In WW11, Ireland remained neutral. Given its poverty and complete lack of an air force or navy, it would have been foolish to do otherwise. That didn't stop more than 40,000 of its citizens from joining British and Commonwealth forces.

Be careful using the word embarrassing

Watched the game and the result went pretty much as expected. The side Australia picked this year was well substandard to previous years, but worse still the was very little passion and absolutely no desparation during the game. Expect pretty much the same next week, cause really the care factor has pretty much gone from this concept from the Australian public and players. Which is a petty because the feeling I get is that the Irish really enjoy the contest.

Kudo's to the Irish, they looked the much better side.

What a bizarre thing to say.
Year after year, we get the same comments about 'the irish'.
Win, lose or draw.
How is it possible to not care about this joke of a game and yet simultaneously be that annoyed by losing that you have to resort to ignorant stereotypes and slurs that have little if anything to do with sport.

Believe me, if the whole thing was abandoned, very few here in Ireland would care.
The players like it, the public watch it because a) loads of free tickets are given to clubs and b) there's a chance there'll be a fight (though not anymore it seems).
It's on its last legs and should be allowed to die.
