Rubbish. If it weren't a Collingwood player, you'd think this was soft. Should've been out for all finals too. He knew he wasn't allowed to do it but he did it anyway. 3 times.

This kind of stuff could get referred to the police. It's insider trading for sports. Therefore the AFL have to come down hard on it. Plus all the sponsorship stuff from the betting companies. If they had any doubts about the integrity of games they wouldn't have odds for them.

This is now 4 pies players in the last few years who have received lengthy suspensions for poor choices outside the club. There needs to be some questions asked of the club.

Yeah, this is akin to multiple occasions of spot-fixing, so yeah, it is MUCH worse. Super lucky he only copped 10 weeks, convenient he is back for finals.

Love how AFL have betting agencies sponsorships heavily advertising in each game. It’s such an ugly business. Gambling is a huge problem, particularly in Australia. AFL needs to do more and have less deals with Tab, Sportsbet etc. it’s even there for kids to see during games, and at the matches too

Players and club staff are well educated on not placing bets or trading internal info to people for benefits extensively, you have to complete the AFL accreditation for it every single season.

His mental health should be taken into factor, by way of supporting him not reducing his ban, that's just stupidity.

Hard to believe someone would even risk being in a betting syndicate that may at some point put money on AFL or VFL games. Stupidity

If you've gone through the AFL draft camps and draftee inductions, there's no excuse of 'limited life experience'. It is absolutely hammered into them.

Stephenson placed three same game multi-bets in three separate matches this season in which he played. The bet stakes totalled $36.

The matches in question were against the Western Bulldogs in round four, Essendon in round six and St Kilda in round nine.

The multi-bets included legs on:

• Collingwood to win,
• Collingwood winning margin,
• Stephenson to kick a goal,
• Stephenson to kick three or more goals,
• Collingwood teammates to kick a goal,
• Collingwood teammates to kick two or more goals, and
• Collingwood teammates to have in excess of a number of disposals.

On two occasions Stephenson gave cash to a friend to place the bets for him, on one occasion he used the friend's betting account. All bets were unsuccessful.

That's pretty damning...and seriously how can anyone be defending him? No clue.

He is playing in these games and can directly influence the outcome to suit his bets...a bit similar to spot-fixing in cricket.

So he bets Collingwood winning margin...what if he bet Collingwood by 1-39, they are up by 38 late in the game and Stephenson has a shot on goal? The integrity of the game is questioned where he may purposely miss. Yeah Collingwood still win but it effects their % and also that of the other team, which can actually impact ladder positions of numerous teams.

And the other ones, he might be selfish and try to kick a goal rather than pass to a teammate in a better position for his bet, he may pass it to a teammate to get his disposal numbers up etc.

It's a black and white case.

Its OK, I get you're angry at one of your players for being a complete idiot which is why you're trying to divert the attention away from the current issue in this thread, but you should be thankful the AFL have manufactured this so he is back for finals.

Was thinking re the tanking a few weeks ago - the tanking didn't help either team in the short or long term. Probably a good advertisement for teams to not do it.

Small bets, but what was the pay off if they came in? It doesn't make sense to me, he would surely be on some substantial coin already and even if it was a decent win by average punter standards, probably would have been nominal for an up and coming superstar....

My guess is a combination of addiction (more for the thrill than the $$$) and also to help his mates.

His mates could have been your average 19 year olds doing small multii's or putting smallish bets on the footy, and could have made similar bets on Stephenson with the knowledge he'd help them win.

Maybe the AFL and SEN should give back the gambling sponsorships they have or maybe
they should ask the ANSWER, "Nice catch boss". Young men make mistakes, maybe they

Re the current issue - Stephenson copped his whack.

What I don't understand is you get 8 weeks for breaking someones jaw and 10 weeks with a large suspended sentence hanging over you head for placing small bets yourself and self reporting. Anyone can see this was stupid and hardly match fixing. 8 week penalty, deregistered (banned for life if you bet again).
Gaff should have got a bigger penalty for what he did. Hardly minor and was intentional.
Knew an AFL player who got his sister-in-law to place his weekly friendly small bets on AFL games for him.
