Jason Johnson Should Be Dropped

No argument from me after the weekend. I thaught he did enough to keep his spot after the roos game but he was just so slow on the weekend and he cannot handball to save himself which is an imperative aspect of our runnning game from half back through the middle. At least pev and monfries can handball

It appears you guys learnt nothing from yesterdays result. Having a fast running game is pointless if the opposistion has the ball. Johnson is the one guy in our midfield who has strength. Our lack of ability to win the ball yesterday hurt as not our lack of footspeed. Having the fastest midfield is useless if you can't win the clearance. I thought Johnson was reasonable yesterday and serviceable in round 1. I wouldn't be sending him to Bendigo just yet. Given the number of young lightly built players i feel Johnson is very much needed as that one strong bodied player.

i agree with you one hundred percent. I found myself yelling at him through the tv several times. if he is dropped i think we should bring back peverill, because we dont lose too much experience

Agree!

Jason Johnson should be dropped. He may have a bigger body but his decision making, especially under pressure and fatigue, and disposal are at best average. He is definately in the twilight of his career but could and would be a handy leader at Bendigo.

i dont know if he should be dropped but he handballed to stagnate players too often which led to them getting tackled or pressured and losing the ball, which usually resulted in a goal on sunday.

I think that he has been doing this for some time now. His decision making really lets him down big time and so does the pressure he puts on his team mates. Time to go. Bring back Andrew Welsh - 5 goals in a half of footy and he is tough at the ball. Got JJ covered on all fronts.:thumbsu:

I just feel he has lost a fair bit ability in the ball winning field. His lack of pace means that he struggles to get to contests. Given that he relies on force instead of footy smarts (unlike Hird or Watson) for his ball winning, he has really lost his edge.

I would really want to replace him with Hislop as soon as possible as Hislop can get to more contests and is far more flexible.

No!

We need bigger bodies in the midfield. He tries his heart out and always goes in hard. If Welsh comes back in this week, I think he should play in the middle because he goes in hard and we need that ATM. Maybe try playing more of the runners off half back and see if they can create something from defense. Combine that with some hard, quick running and we should be able to dominate Carlton.

Spot on. JJ is a once in a lifetime player with relentless commitment and tenacity, and one of the few guys who gets in and under and puts his bigger body on the line. With the emergence of our quicker, smaller bodied players (Jetta, Davey, Dempsey) we will continually need more of these great players in the mould of Johnson, and the loss of Solomon and Mark Johnson haven't helped our cause with this.

However, age is always a factor, and addmitedly JJ has dropped off his game a bit in the past couple of years, and he sometimes struggles due to his lack of pace. This just places more emphasis on the need for younger in and under players, as we have the runners, and guys like Watson will begin to become increasingly important. Perhaps we now need to look to the future and find some stronger bodied youngsters, and focus our recruiting more on that now that we have the pace.

Keep JJ, a true champion of our great club, until he retires. Respect a legend.

I completly agree, we need the strong, seasoned bodies in the midfield while the younger guys come through. After seeing the game on Sunday, we didn't look strong enough and sending JJ to Bendigo is not the answer. JJ has served us well, he is exactly what we need at the moment.

We have the dashers playing in the seniors, but are lacking the in and under players or the 'tough nut' like JJ and soloman et al. I know Lonergan is one of these type of players and we must persist, but maybe in the next draft or 2 we should look at a Hurn/masten/bird type player to help out Jetta, Davey, Dempsey, etc.

On the flip side, i think that slattery needs to be set back to bendigo, kicking across the face of oppositions goal and turning it over just did it for me on Sunday. Maybe one more week where he tails a struggling Judd might save him for another week..

I have to say that jj is definatly struggling and has been for a while now. To be honest i believe that as knightsy says we are in a re-building phase so its time for change and new blood.

24 possies. 58 per cent of that where effective cant have that in our great game of footy today. His out in come Welsh and Lovett (With Dempsey injured for 2-3 weeks) :thumbsu:

Sounds good, considering Welsh carved up the VFL kicking 5 in a half. Is Lovett allowed back yet? Heard that his suspension is until Round 4.

And I almost guarentee that 90% of his 42% of ineffective disposals came from contested possessions where he got no help from his team mates.

JJ was crucified on the weekend by team mates (although mostly young ones) that refused to give him any sort of protection.

Winning a contested ball and kicking it forward to a 1 on 1 is considered an ineffective kick on the stats sheet. The reality isn't the same though.

If he's winning the ball against three and turning it over, we shouldn't be blaming him for that, he's doing his job.

Jason Johnson had 5 contested possessions and 2 clearances. That is less than Stanton and Davey.

He doesn't have the ability to win the the ball and dish it off properly because he is too fatigued.

He is playing like Pev last year but with less effectiveness.

No doubt should be dropped as he will look very very slow on the G.
