Rumour Jeremy Finlayson under investigation - 3 game suspension

Suspended. Glad to see this grub stamped out of the game.
Crazy to see this has more thumbs downs than positive reactions

Does the average punter realise there is most likely a gay man that has taken the field for their team at some point? You cheer these people, but are okay with them feeling uncomfortable with discriminatory language in the workplace?

Selective plucker
All of the opinions I posted above can be found within the most recent 2 pages of the thread on the Port board. Add in there, "why does it matter what Finlayson said if the Essendon player wasn't gay?"

Instead of trying to misinform and deflect, simply be better. Your boy is a grub, and if you defend him so are you.

You’re a ****ing clown.

The majority of port supporters are fine with taking the hard stance. We are just incensed that your grub coach got a slap on the wrist.

No issue with the ban. I just dont know how the AFL can justify the difference between this and Clarko's sanction.

If you are Finlayson / Port you could feel you've been treated much harsher. AFL consistency at it's best.
- The word that Finlayson used is stronger
- Clarkson is a coach, Finlayson is a player. coaches missing games isn't as big a deal as players.

3 weeks for that, Well kangaroo court is in operation at the AFL. It strikes me as Fringe Player punishment. 3 Weeks is not the problem its the inconsistency and hypocrisy. Would they have Dared to give a top 20 player this sanction. Clarko gets a suspended sentence?
He's clearly been scapegoated and been made example of but given he's a 16-25 ranked player on the list they will give him a break and cop their whack.

AFL statement
The AFL wishes to advise that Port Adelaide player Jeremy Finlayson has been found guilty of breaching AFL Rule 2.3(a) (Conduct Unbecoming) in relation to an incident during the third quarter of Friday night's match against Essendon.

Finlayson used an unprompted and highly offensive homophobic slur against an Essendon opponent, which demeans and denigrates persons regardless of their sexuality.

Finlayson has received a three-match suspension and is required to attend appropriate Pride in Sport training as approved by the AFL in which Finlayson will pay for personally.

He will not be eligible to play for Port Adelaide during Round 5, 6 and 7, including playing in the SANFL.

In determining the sanction, the AFL took into account Finlayson’s immediate apology and contrition, both privately on the night, publicly the next day and again on Monday.

To be clear, without the full and frank admissions, apologies and contrition that Finlayson showed, the sanction would have included a longer suspension.

“Everyone, including Jeremy understands the word he used is both hurtful and totally unacceptable in any setting, ever,” AFL General Counsel Stephen Meade said.

“The AFL is very clear that homophobia has no place in our game, nor in society. We want all people in LGBTQI+ communities to feel safe playing or attending our games and we know the incident that happened on the weekend does not assist this goal. As a code we will continue to work together to improve our game as a safe and inclusive environment for all.

“The AFL will continue to consider the specific circumstances in each incident in determining appropriate responses. Jeremy’s sanction would have been higher if he didn’t immediately understand and take ownership of his mistake both privately and publicly.”

All AFL and AFLW Players and officials receive yearly education regarding vilification and the effects of such behaviour, and we will continue to build on anti-vilification training across our code at all levels.

'No place in our game': Finlayson banned for homophobic slur:

Both AFL CEO Andrew Dillon and EGM of Football Laura Kane had refrained from making comparisons to recent incidents of vilification by players and coaches, saying the League would treat each case on its own merits.

"The really important thing to note here is the consistency with vilification matters is how seriously we take them," Kane told Footy Feed Extra on Monday.

"They're incredibly important integrity investigation processes for us because this is not something we want to hear or see on the field, off the field, or in fact in society, and we take all vilification matters incredibly seriously.

"In terms of comparing and contrasting, we investigate all these matters individually and we make sure that any sanction is connected to the incident that we are investigating and that we are dealing with."

Basically, would have gotten more if he didn't immediately apologise and report. Which is fair enough.

"What about Clarkson?", "what did the Essendon player say to provoke him?", "would he be getting the same suspension if he didn't play for Port?", "would he be getting the same suspension if he wasn't indigenous?"

How about: "Jeremy, can you please not use hate speech in the workplace?". I'm yet to see a single Port fan ask that question lol
If you don’t listen, refuse to hear.

Why can’t it be both?

Why can’t it be “Jeremy, learn and be better?” as well as “Why doesn’t Clarkson have to be better?” and “Why doesn’t the North Melbourne coach get a suspension?” and “Was he provoked in order to respond in a hateful way (which doesn’t excuse the response but informs it).”

If you think the world is so obviously clear and unambiguous that there shouldn’t be discussions on circumstances and parallels, then I envy you and pity you in equal measure.

the feelings of alienation and discrimination are so foreign to them that they’d have another riot in cronulla (or in ports case port pirie) if they ever had it go their way

Finlayson deserved a whack.
3 games though? The AFL is clearly sending a message that it rightly won’t be tolerated.

AFL have to be careful now where they draw the line.
Are Mum jokes ok?
Sister sledges?
Illness trolls?
Mental health attacks?
Background teasing (ie bush player / poor suburb / Tassie 2 heads / incest banter).

Can of worms open here?

Everyone deserves a fair and safe workplace.

Then you have not been on the Port thread. Try getting out more.

with all do respect the amount of people downplaying the seriousness of what Finlayson did on your board is abysmally sad and seems to be the overwhelming majority.

Instead of focusing of what he actually did it's all about whatabout clarko or whatabout something else.

I may get in some strife for this but feel like it needs to be said.

I and many others I know have used the word Clarkson used flippantly as a word to describe someone who's being an ass, or an idiot (pick your word here). Whilst I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I've personally never heard it really used as to describe someone for its literal definition (or as a homophobic slur). What Finlayson said, there is no conjecture about what that means, everyone knows exactly what that word is and who it upsets.

It's why Clarksons punishment will be the standard for approaching a player in the manner that he did, not for the word he used.

Pull your head in. You're a massive hypocrite and it would only take 30sec to find an equal amount of people defending Clarko and I bet you'd be one of them.
