Not necessarily, but it's getting much, much harder to use those words now in society without realising that they are now taboo, and making the connection as to why.

Of course some parts of society change faster than others, but Gen Z are vastly less tolerant of people using "f*g" and "r****d" as insults than my Millennial generation was.

It's getting to the point now where ignorance is a LOT harder to claim, and at some point you are saying those words because you genuinely either have no respect for the reasons they are deemed taboo, or you actively want to make a contrarian statement about why they are taboo.

Sure, which is why JF realised immediately the impact of what he'd said, and how contrite he was. Still, in a charged situation, coming from a generation who has seen attitudes change rather than be born into the new way, one might see how it could have slipped out.

I think he's going to have to bare his bum and take his licks so to speak. I feel sorry for him because I know his situation and doubt he's a homphobe but the AFL have squibbed it when it comes to the LGBTQIA+ community at every opportunity and now they've got an easy chance to look like they're making a stand.

The afl never make a stand on anything. They are all about PR management to give a false image.

They painted themselves into a corner when they failed to suspend Clarkson for a very similar offence and are now pretending it’s ‘different’.

If anything, Clarkson’s was worse. He’s a coach for God’s sake.

I think Finlayson gets 2 weeks. Will be interesting to see if they actually enforce Clarkson’s suspended sentence the next time he uses a homophobic slur/threatens a woman/assaults a member of the public.

Am i reading right that you are saying the word F***** also means loser? If that's true then I'm not sure what planet you live on but that word has always been and still is a major slur against gay people namely men.

It is not nor has ever been a substitute for the term loser. Thats just a stupid take if that's what you are suggesting.

It's not up to us to decide if a homophobic slur is worse than a racial slur. Victims of both would probably feel similar emotions.

They have both been no go zones for the best part of 30 years.........

No issue with the ban. I just dont know how the AFL can justify the difference between this and Clarko's sanction.

If you are Finlayson / Port you could feel you've been treated much harsher. AFL consistency at it's best.

I have no idea where I stand on this obviously homophobic abuse isn’t ok but I’m sure there would be some pretty vile things thrown every week on an AFL field.

Some people go to pretty dark places whilst competing in physical sports to get an edge.

That being said we suspend blokes for split decisions they make whilst attacking the footy so we have to suspend them for this I guess.
