I know there is a thread about contracts etc, but this was more a spot to say what a great bloke as well as cricketer Katich is

A few months ago a guy from my old club (North Shore in Sydney) won a competition. Prize was a T20 game against NSW on the SCG. Great day sitting in the menbers watching the boys run around.

Kat was injured, and this was basically a mid week muck about, however he attended for the full day, chatted with all the North Shore playrs and supporters and stuck around for a beer afterwards.

There was also an elderly couple from England doing the SCG tour who sat down and watched some of the game. They were obviously cricket tragics and started talking to Kat about his county games. He spent a stack of time with them.

Then at the end of the game he took my 12 year old who had been running drinks onto the ground into the NSW rooms, got him a ball autographed and introduced him around.

Didn't have to do any of this, but he did.

Special mention to Moises Henriques who stuck around for a few beers and a chat, and Dave Warner who not only invited my son onto the field to sub field for him for an over, but after the game gave him his playing shirt, two pairs of gloves and a bat !!

Bit different to a certain young star (contracted) who whinged like a girl at wasting a day with park cricketers and shot trough as soon as he could.

Shame Kat couldn't have gone out in a better way - like a home test against India at least.

From what I've heard about Warner from people that have played with and against him, he's a top bloke, but arrogant as all **** about his cricket. So he'll have a beer with you, have a chat, have a laugh, be really genuine and nice, but he just thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to cricket.

Who's the young star who whinged like a girl? Steve Smith?

EDIT: And yeah, on topic, Katich has always seemed like a genuine, no-nonsense, champion of a guy.

No, a certain opening bat with dodgy technique

Warner was just a genuine young bloke - a bit cocky but OK. The best thing was that when he batted he didn't take the urine. He showed respect for the North Shore bowlers and played like it meant something. He scored a ripper 90odd and holed out trying to get a 6 for his ton.

kat went to my high school here in perth. held in very high regard, he and his parents were heavily involved in the cricket program here and set up the development program that exists now.

he still holds the record for the highest score by a Trinity batsmen in a Darlot cup game, was 211 or something

Dissapointing, always seemed to have a good attitude when first coming into the test side but maybe the last year or two has seen his attitude/ego change a bit, should sharpen up a bit.

Tsk tsk. Always thought Jaques was a tosser. ;)

Hmm, also goes to show how many opening batsmen NSW have, and how many have dodgy techniques. Could have been Warner or Katich (but both were already mentioned), Jaques, or of course Hughes.
His junior club is commonly known as scum so wouldnt be a surprise:D

But his technique isn't really dodgy though.... it's "unorthodox" and "inventive". :thumbsu::D

What chance Usman as an opening batsman? he looked like he could block a cruise missile in his limited test opportunities? Probably the most impressive opening display from a technique perspective :)

Compared to what we had seen all summer, if Johnson had played his first test, we would have been raving about his batting technically though, so it's hard to tell if Khawaja is that solid in all honesty.

It seems to be taken for granted by all and sundry that it will be Hughes, but I'm not sure where this consensus comes from. They have a history of putting non-openers in that spot. I'd like to see Khawaja or even Marsh given a shot at it purely because I so dislike watching Hughes bat.

And to think they've only contracted two opening batsmen!?!

One, an all-rounder whom many assume will eventually work his way down the order. The other a young hit or miss "potential" for whom the jury is still out.
