I’ve had a sore finger from posting about our forward entries over the last few years.I am watching the ARL match between Newcastle and Brisbane.
on the 5th tackle the Brisbane guy kicked. He duffed the kick and it rolled sideways/ forward going all over the place and the Newcastle player stuffed it up resulting in a try to Brisbane.
The commentator said “it’s amazing how many miskicks result in tries”.
It just reinforced my view that we need to stop bombing the ball and adopt the “Richmond chaos ball”.
JK; magnificent FF that he is/was; was never renown for his pack marks; Yet so many times we plonk it on his head and three or four defenders would crunch him.
Now we burst out of defence and bomb it to JD V 2 or 3 defenders and then abuse him for not marking it.
Tho‘ we never get them on the park together; we have some of the best AFL small forwards going round.Grubber the ball or kick it on the lace, JD JK NN AO all these guys are good below their knees.
If ARL commentators can see a relevant way forward why can’t we think outside the box?
Funnily enough after those comments we won’t see ARL players adopting the kick.
We are all slow learners!

The club ends up bombing it long to a contest because of its complete non-ability to move the ball from defence to attack with any speed or purpose. By the time the ball ever gets into the forward half of the ground, the opposition has already flooded their defensive 50 with 15+ players, leaving no lead-up options available to kick to.

Unfortunately the "chaos ball" entry with the way our players currently take up positions on the ground more often lends to those opposing extras cleaning up the ground ball get and counterattacking in numbers through the corridor to create an opportunity for a shot on goal under little pressure.

Dirty attacking entries can only be made to work if they are being backed up by an effective high press that cause the defence to panic and/or make mistakes. Otherwise all you are doing is giving away possession at a time when most of the team is poorly positioned to defend against the turnover.

So what you are saying is that our problem kicking inside 50 is that we are too accurate which seems ironic given we can't seem to hit a target anywhere else on the ground.
More so when we have the ball locked in our forward line ;remember those days;? we repeatedly bomb back in ;they put up four defenders ;punch it forward where their mass of defenders are waiting and scramble a mad kick out .Rinse and repeat.

It's not just bombing the ball forward instead of kicking it flat to a leading target.

It is also that we have 2 or 3 flying for the ball and spoiling each other. Most of the time there is less of them flying which means they can run it back put unopposed.
