Let's get serious about rivalries.

Whilst a fierce state rivalry, I don't much rate the derbies. Essendon and Sydney are the first rivals I think of, and along with Port are often our bogey teams so the scalp is never taken for granted. I hate Essendon and Port when we play them.

I particularly enjoy our finals head to head haha!

As for the Dons, while we no doubt love the seldom beating of Collingwood on ANZAC day or Richmond in Dreamtime, I doubt us and either club would consider the rivalry to be the biggest.

Definitely Carlton and Hawks for Essendon.

Tbf they don’t draw relatively big crowds when one or both sides are average. Only when both sides are going really well do they sell out... unless it’s an event like Anzac Day.

Maybe agree to share both games, not a home game, an away game ... too hard? Season seated members get 11 games still.

As in derbies are treated as almost a ballot for members of both clubs

Instead of one home/one away, each member for both clubs gets allocated derby #1 or derby #2 - and if they get #1 the seatholder for the other club gets #2

Every other game treated as normal?

Kind of makes sense. Doubt it will happen. But would give each member a guaranteed derby each year in their set seat. Just rotate through home and away I guess

Wanting to maintain set seats would be near on impossible given many families/friends go to games as groups.

If you actually go right back Fitzroy and Collingwood were the fiercest of rivals in the competition.

In the last decade and change, hawthorn and geelong have produced one of the greatest rivalries in AFL history.

Geelong win 2007 flag

2008 season, geelong easily the best team in the league goes down to a well-drilled, hungry and systematic hawthorn in the grand final.

Then geelong win next 10 games in a row, including 2011 qualifying final. Many wins in tight circumstances, on their way to winning 2009 and 2011 premierships.

Hawthorn snap the kennet curse in the 2013 preliminary final, where i could bare to watch varcoe's shot at goal. Unbelievable atmoshpere.

the teams trade H/A games then meet in the 2014 qualifying final, where hawthorn wins comfortably on the way to consecutive premierships.

hawthorn wins both 2015 games on way to third consecutive premiership.

Geelong wins both games in 2016, including Isaac Smith's after the siren miss to win in a qualifying final.

Since then, geelong have won 3 times and hawthorn twice including another Isaac Smith missed shot after the siren in 2017.

Geelong lead the h2h 17-8, but hawthorn lead in finals 3-2

Agree - I think people confuse having close competitive matches (eg. Geel v Hawth) with true rivalry and hatred.

It's the 'hatred' that makes for these traditional rivalries - Essendon v Carlton, Hawthorn v Essendon, Richmond v Collingwood etc.

THEN WHY ARE YOU HERE

To tell you that you're wrong.

There's nothing better in life than sitting in amongst a mass majority of supporters from your own club, watching your cross-town rivals getting thumped while their few hangers-on glumly head for the carpark at three quarter time. Glorious.

Except a Grand Final win.

What is that reason?
In 1897 you were in a different league battling it out with Brunswick for the wooden spoon.
Do lol at you forfeiting the 1904 grand final because you didn’t like the umpire
