Liam Ryan’s mark

I’d imagine from the Collingwood perspective, fans would have poured over that passage of play and wondered if only. Others have seen it more than I have but were there any play errors by Collingwood players that last stanza? I don’t really recall any standout moments - more quality play by the Eagles

A couple of decisions that in hindsight were the wrong ones but hardly howlers. De Goey not going with McGovern has been mentioned. Collingwood already had a player up though so if that ball drops then De Goey probably has time and space to kick the sealer. Langdon losing his feet in the marking contest against Ryan was a costly error (more on this later) but hardly something that can be helped. Maynard should have gone to the drop of the ball rather than engaged with Rioli but I imagine he didn’t notice Sheed until it was too late. More great West Coast play than Collingwood error for me though.

Ryan mark is definitely underrated for me. Came into the contest at an odd angle, leapt high and importantly kept his feet in the contest. The most underrated part of this passage of play was that Ryan had the presence of mind to play-on quickly knowing they had the numbers. Ryan quickly yanks the ball from Langdon’s hands before playing on. You can see that Langdon wasn’t planning on giving the ball back until he got to his feet and you even see him make a small attempt to block Ryan from grabbing the ball from his hands without trying to give away a 50m penalty. It would have only been a second or two difference but that’s probably enough time for Collingwood to get back and block up space in West Coast’s forward 50. Not to mention that Ryan would have been forced to kick over Langdon, giving the ball more airtime and more time for a Collingwood defender to intercept the kick into 50. Instead, Ryan plays on quickly, Collingwood’s defense isn’t ready and...

The biggest stuff up and underrated moment came just before the play.

When the ball comes out of Collingwood's defensive 50 - it goes long to a contest on the southern wing - it goes through hands and Treloar runs onto it out the back.

Cripps busts an absolute gut to get across and put pressure on Treloar forcing him to kick early and on his non-preferred thus allowing Gov to do Gov things. However he never would have got there had Will Hoskin-Elliott put even a modicum of effort into shepherding him. Instead WHE was ball watching looking further afield and let Cripps run past him.

You know what happens next.

There is another forgotten part that i'm sure a certain Collingwood captain is very happy slipped under the radar late in the game. If you watch the AFL 360 footage from the one camera angle of the entire match winning passage of play, you'll see Scott Pendlebury ends up in the defensive 50 not going near a single Eagles player the entire time he jogs down from midfield. He never gets into a sprint and he ends up only about 15 metres from where Sheed marked the ball. Had he busted a gut and not gotten caught looking around aimlessly for a loose West Coast player, he easily could have affected the contest where Maynard was left one on two. It might sound harsh, but a defensively minded player would have picked up on much quicker and done everything he could to get there.

Apparently Vardy was able to mark Gov’s kick in the middle of 4 Pies players because he had slipped over just beforehand and was out of the play briefly. Combine this with both Ryan and Sheed supposed to have been dragged for the last 5 minutes and it really was an amazing sequence of events.
But the mark by Ryan?
So skillful because the two defenders did everything right.

Best season to date from Jack , got another level IMHO as shown by his form before getting injured. Still the Eagles forward set up gets about as much credit as the midfield, ho hum !!

Funny because he had a bit of a down game. However just one passage of play where he won a crucial ball and did the correct thing erases every negative thing he did

Actually Ryan had a ripper of a game but is remembered for the 3rd quarter pull out. He was everywhere in the 4th, unlucky not to have a couple of goals to seal it (2 posters) and his hit on Maynard was a catalyst that fired the boys up IMO. It was a first year player playing his first game on the G in front of 100k- really could not have asked for more from him- except that one decision in the 3rd.
I vividly remember seeing that kick coming in from Vardy and thought there is no way we are going to get that, please get it to ground. I still dont know how he got in position to take that grab against 2 much taller defenders. It was very special but yes over shadowed by Sheed's goal.

If you go back to 2006 there are some underrated late moments also. Everyone remembers 'Chick! Hunter! Goal!' and Steven Armstrong's late snap, and Malceski's goal to take it to 85-84, and then Huddo's 'Who would have thought the sequel, would be as good as the original?' call.

Who remembers Daniel Chick chasing down Ted Richards a couple of minutes later? Or Andrew Embley running back with the flight to mark inside defensive 50 after that? Or Rowan Jones winning a 1 on 1 with Leo Barry in the middle of the ground (why the **** did you kick there, Cousins???) with 20 seconds to go...

Great mark - incredibly athletic, visually pleasing and it was executed at a crunch time of the march - but not a classic hanger like Goddard's 2009. Not as high up off the ground.

The thing I enjoyed the most about seeing the replays of that final passage of play and Sheed's winning goal was the reaction from the Eagles fans and Magpie ferals in the first ten rows behind him. Every emotion was on display.

Langdon actually ended up on his arse with the footy after the mark and when he heard the umpire pay it he rolled over, put the footy on the ground underneath him and was hunched over it on his hands/knees trying to impede Ryan from getting it. Ryan stood up, reached over Langdon with one hand and pushed the footy underneath Langdon towards his other hand, picked it up and ran off.

Playing on quickly gained valuable seconds and allowed the 2 on 1 in the forward line to happen. Probably would have been avoided if Langdon soaked up more time by holding onto the ball, slowly standing up and throwing it back.

McGovern was the most impressive part in that passage of play outside of Sheed IMO. To come off de Goey and mark the ball instead of punch it, then to play on, take the game on by making a decisive pass through the midst of congestion to Vardy - it set the tone for their whole attack.

That whole passage of play was just absurd from West Coast though. There was no margin for error. I'm still in disbelief that they managed to pull it off in the dying minutes of a Grand Final. Just pure instinct in the build up then Sheed finishing it off the way he did could not have been more fitting.
