A question for the draft watchers here - there has been talk of a superdraft and great talent going well into the second round ... I was looking at Knightmare's phantom and he puts in a huge amount of work into his discussion. He has Port taking Shannon Taylor at #22. He's small and fast, was completely overlooked last year and even Knightmare describes him as incomplete. Now ok who knows who we will take in the second round but if Taylor is nominated at that early stage is it really that deep a superdraft?

The further out you are from the draft, the more you get draft watchers ranking players on current performance over long-term AFL viability. In addition the `needs' of clubs are less obvious before delistings, there's been no draft camp to give the athletic input to the equation and there hasn't been the same pooling of info across states as you end up with later in the year.

Its interesting to read Knightmare's mid-season rankings but keep this in mind.

Honestly it's not a super draft

The top 30 is very strong then it goes down hill quick

Nah Ford it isn't as super a draft as some make it out to be. Has depth in mids but very thin on talls. And the depth in mids is depth in solid players rather than depth in potential real good players......hope that makes sense.

But the top end is really good. With an earlyish pick we should get a real good player......well should is a key word!

It should have been deeper with crouch and the dude the gc picked up in mini draft. Ridiculous concession for GWS.

Knightmares phantom is good for reading about the highly ranked players. But I take the order in jest. He has no idea who thd clubs are interested in.

No poster on this board , let alone BF would have any idea as to whether this year will be a super draft or not. I listen to the commentators who should have some idea, but even these guys will only be proven correct in 5 years time.
Just accept the players we get on face value, until proven otherwise on the field.

Knightmare is also shockingly Victorian player bias (no offense if you're reading, i'm SA draftee bias) He often goes of needs this early on

Midfielder at second round thanks

With Youngster here as well

it is a draft where the top 35ish is better than most other years top 35ish but after that it is around the same, there won't be Dane Swans hiding around every 5th rounder that everyone thinks there is
(Natman i get the above from, Mike Sheehan's views, Emma Qauyle (spelling?) and in my view the lower State teams are a worse outfit than last years)

That is why i think it is vital to get at least 4 probably even 5 picks in the top 30 or so

they called it a super-draft based on how many kids looked good as under-agers last year. and of course the theory was well when all the other heaps good players appear....

and it hasnt really happened. for the last month or so people including emma q have stated the super-draft calls were early and not really applicable anymore. still going to be some good talent available.

when knightmare and chris25 do their phantoms this early its just basically a rough ranking of players from 1 to whatever. they dont really start assigning players to teams until later and even then its part best player part what they think we need and a whole lot of guesswork.

the best thing to take from it is a rough guide ( even one recruiters list will differ to another) and some information on the players themselves which is quite interesting.

Watching the u/18 champs i hope we pick up that calquhoun kid. He looks like the hbf player chocco wanted and primus wants. He seems to rack up possessions, good rebounder and has a nice kick on him. If we pick him up hopefully it would mean hartlett midfield, pearce wing and salter forward. But knowing our luck he'll probably be groomed in the brett ebert lead up forward role.

Toumpas looks alright. Commentators are saying he's playing with a hip injury. They are also talking up his leadership abilities. I also like the look of kennedy. He looks like he could be a massive upgrade on phillips and hitchcock.

Toumpas is so skillful and McDonough is a great mark and crumber want these 2 so bad

I like the look of McDonough as well. Only thing is he'll play the brett ebert role if we pick him up which is a role i think we can do without.

No flankers under any circumstances thanks. Genuine mids or genuine KPPs
Yeah I'd like for us to pick up some genuine mids also. Just think if we can pick colquhoun up on the cheap hopefully that means no more of our midfielders will ever be made to play that hbf role again.

would have to ask others who have watched him more but my impession is that colquhoun is a midfielder who pkays back, rather than just a back that might be able to play midfield.

maybe jonts knows if he plays more mid locally but thats the impression ive gotten.

On McDonough, don't know that much about him, saw him play today, against NT and twice at SANFL level
plays majority of SANFL footy in the middle and then is thrown down back to steady the ship or lock the game away
While at State level it is different, he starts down back and is thrown into the middle to add something new

Was impressed today with Toumpas, Mayes, Dunstan Kennedy (hoping he would get more midfield time)
Primus stated he liked to looks of Grundy and Toumpas, he was interveiwed at the ground today

wait , do you mean coluqoun or does mcdonough play in midfield and down back?

yeah, i think grundy is a lock to gws, whitfield too good to slip past 1, but cant see toumpas going anywhere too far after those guys? its either pick 3,4 or 5 at worst but i doubt it. frak i hope gc bid on viney otherwise melb can make off with toumpas ( p4), then pick 5, pick 12, then viney at their 2nd round. that would just be so stupid.

Yeah my bad Phil mean coluqoun, yer Grundy to GWS will be the go.

I dont mind if Toumpas plays injured all year, should be number 1/2. Also wouldn't mind if Whitfield also keeps playing at FF

Gee he'd wanna be better than Phillips and Hitchcock otherwise we'd be wasting a pick cos those 2 are spuds and duds
