Stringer is my first choice just cos I think he will be the best player from this draft and he's so versatile.

But I don't think he's exactly what we need. He doesn't have amazing pace (although I don't think he's as slow as some people make out) and he's much more an inside mid than an outside mid. I think we need more outside mids. Toumpas seems to be the go there, as he can also do great inside work, but if we want the best outside mid that we have a realistic shot at getting, I'm thinking Sam Mayes is the option.

i definitely think that midfielders is our greatest need and that rucks with an early pick are a big risk. i also think we have at worst good enough rucks in time ( maybe much better on development?)

saying that the only way ild be upset if we did take grundy would be if we passed on toumps and whitfield to get him. i think all 3 of them will be game winners. and i would love someone like wines, but he will just add to our team and make us better. i think guys like toumpas and grundy will actually win you games.

of course this is all besides the point i think gws will definitely grab him

and can i just say that if the dees and dogs both finish below us then that is as good as another compromised draft for us. just to add to the bloody beating that is finishing so poorly as we have while teams with priority pick #1's play in grand finals.

omeara/ crouch have already been plucked from the top 6 of this draft, if the dees and dogs finish lower than us that is 4 players back in the draft for us.

thanks demetri.

the more i think about it the more ild like to see our team get a pp (mid-first round*) based on the shellacking we have received by being poor at the wrong time. i doubt it will happen though.

*i say mid-first round because pick #1 priority picks never should have been given out in the first place. too costly to other poor teams.

Toumpas or Mayes, for mine.

I went to uni with Toumpas' sister. I should tell her to pass on a message to him... something along the lines of "Pull a Cyril Rioli for Port, plz?". Haha :D

Outside or inside isnt really my point. Stringer is a game changer. He is the type of player that will change the course of a game. We need as many of that type of player as possible whilst addressing our needs.

And I believe the quality of your outside mids is very dependant on the quality of the guys getting the ball to them.

we really need an outside mid with speed and footskills or an all-round run and spread ball winner more than an inside ball winner. having said that if the inside ball winner is an upgrade on the ones you have then gaining that player is a positive.

so positives for stringer are
- big lad, tall and strong
-great kick
-competitive, wants to take on and win type player

negatives are
-not overly fast even before the injury
-has had a major injury
-exposed form has been against much lesser opposition. hasnt had alot of exposed form against top opposition since the injury.
-is he a pure mid or a utility type?

for me there are quite alot of question marks. sounds like the kind of guy ild love to have on our team. would fill our need of kicking skills. we still wouldnt have addressed some key issues in our team and there is so much risk with such a bad injury. for mine a big risk for port to take with our current list.

Are there some doubt about Toumpas re - durability/injury history/capacity to reach full fitness in the future?

Stringer is a CHF who has the ability to play through the midfield yeh? Sounds exactly like something we need. Would I be right in assuming he plays like Pav?

Stringer is a big bodied midfielder that wins clearances and uses the ball by foot very well. He is also an excellent mark with great strength that plays forward and can dominate. He isnt really a CHF just like Darling isn't really a CHF. Can definitely take a mark.

Basically the same yes

I really want him, would love to have butcher, Schulz and stringer as a forward line

Or boak, broady, brabert, wingard, hartlett and stringer as a beast of a midfield

But with our 2nd pick we need elite pace

I feel like a penny pincher, but I can't help but think it really sucks to waste pick #5ish this year on something we could've got for pick #16 two years ago.

If Sam Mayes is as good as they say ie the next Pendelbury..we need him bad... I would also offer cloke a 5 year 1mill/year deal just to piss off Eddie and make his life harder..with no intention of actually trading for cloke.. We should look at all clubs for all undervalued players and offer them contracts to see who bites. There are guys at some clubs who cant even get a game that would be in our best.
