Chris Knights and Troy Chaplin heading to Richmond according to The Age.

Do we play chicken with Richmond and match their offer to Chaplin to set up a trade (especially if Thomas is also heading that way as rumoured by a couple)?

I reckon match it Ford.

Even if Chappy forces a trade - at the very least we get a first round draft pick that isn't lost in the musical chairs of free agency trading.

Plus it means we can still play the FA game (we don't lose picks, with the AFL compensating the opposing club on our behalf) and get Moloney etc.

The market doesn't have that many quality talls --> to the point where Chappy is considered one.

So we can extrapolate the results of matching to be ...
1. we retain a KPP in the context that there are few (if any) quality KPP on the market anyway.
or
2. if Chappy requests a trade then seek a first rounder as compensation

To that end would like us to match any offer for Pearce and Chappy. They can still contribute to our club if retained.

Someone is leaking info from the tigers like a sieve. They must be getting info that Richmond are testing the waters on these players, then taking journalistic liberty in saying THEY ARE 100% OFF TO RICHMOND.

ild tell chappy he is a required player and we wont let him walk away.

if richmond is keen on him ild tell em we could talk but under no circumstances we will we just neglect to match their offer.

either

-at worst chappy signs on for another year and we continue to try find more depth at kp defender. play the game again next year.

- chappy re-signs with us and commits long-term

- we force richmond to pay well above market value for chappy

- richmond trade for him. i dont see that we would get their first rounder under these circumstances but ask for their two 2nd rounders ( one is activated compo after our 2nd round pick). chappy and our 3rd for pick 30-34 depending on fa comp picks and another pick around 38ish. that is not a high price to ask for. whether they want to give that or not i dont know but ild walk away and match their offer or at least drive it up high enough anyway. no way should they baulk at pick 30ish + downgrading pick 40 to a pick in the 50's for chappy. if they do we get to go back to chappy and say look what they think you are worth. they only want you for free what does that say about how they value you?

We don't need Chappy that is for sure. Jonas is so much better as the third tall defender, and if we want to continue to use him on small opponents, we may still have something to work with in Blee. Try to get another 20-22 yo tall defender in the trade/draft period and make sure he has three times the mongrel and intestinal fortitude of Chaplin.

Chappy can go free of charge, frees up some money - Whats the talk on Jacobs going home? He was starting to hit some form with the maggies late in the year

stupid to think we should give away chappy.

if you think even half okay 196cm defenders grow on trees why dont you ask carlton, richmond, western bulldogs, st kilda and hawthorn why they have been running around with shit backlines for the last decade???

lets face it chappy is playing for us because we dont have anyone better just yet. if we let him go then we need proper compensation.

fa is meant to allow easier movement of players.

unrestricted can just leave.

restricted can be kept.

this is just to encourage teams to trade, ie, we would be more likely to do a deal to send chaplin, not give him away for free. as ive said, i reckon we hold him or ask for richmonds 2 2nd rounders for chappy and a 3rd. if richmond dont like it then we keep chaplin and dont lose anything we cant afford to.

heres a good game,

make a list of all the key defenders in the league ( not including port) that are measurably better than chaplin, then divide them by 17. then you will understand why even half decent talls are valuable. not enough to go around.

Crazy to offer Chaplin anything above a two year contract, more like it. Why should we pay overs for a player who lets us down too often, just because an opposition wants to put a high price on him? Reckon some clubs will use the threat of FA to force teams into salary squeezes, so that other players shake free either now or in years to come. Chaplin is worth keeping on the list if (1) he wants to stay and (2) he accepts a standard 2y deal.

Noticed that North had a S. Mayes collect 18 touches and 4 goals in their loss to South.

If it's the kid being touted as a first round draft pick and if he has real pace, size (at least height) and elite kicking ability, he would add very nicely to the midfield mix we currently have. I understand he's possibly a reach at pick 7, but we should keep an open mind about getting him with that pick.

If Toumpas is gone, if might come down to Kennedy and Mayes. We could do with both for different reasons, but I think Mayes offers more versatility - height, kicking skills and good pace.

I can see cripps loving Vlaustin though, he is good but not what we need:cool:

I've mentioned this before but i think it is worth mentioning again

At school level everytime Toumpas (PAC??) played on Kennedy (Sacred Heart)
Kennedy won outright, at one time in the last quarter toumpas was moved up forward and Kennedy was tagged as Toumpas wsa just getting pounded

Toumpas is st michaels

But you are correct

I have a relative who plays football with a lot of the people from the state team and they are rated as followed

Grundy>Mayes>Kennedy>Toumpas

This could be because Toumpas was called up to the state side later

They also all thought that irra was a dud and is not worth draftin at all

Ballantyne, Dion Prestia, Luke Dahlhaus... sif you wouldn't want them in your team.

You'd be happy to get a ballantyne or Dahlhaus with pick 7?

Yeah, no thanks.

Personally I'd be going Mayes or Grundy. Im still not sold on Toumpas.

Have a fair few mates who i currently play footy with who played Sacred Heart 1st/2nd/3rds last year and ranked them

Kennedy/Grundy/Mayes/Toumpas

Irra is raw and would be a great late/rookie pick can't see him in the top 50

They weren't rated as highly coming in because of their size. Kennedy is rated extremely highly IN SPITE of his size. Big difference.

Try Prestia at 7 (went at pick 9)
