If Chappy is going to Richmond, then keeping it simple starts with a guy like Jayden Post who apparently is on the way out of the club anyway.

Post has all the same problems that Chaplin does, but worse.

Well the best solution is to have drafted a replacement two to four years ago but we didn't do that.

McCarthy's unfortunate accident may see Jolly/Sumner given the opportunity we are all wishing for. I don't want a Chaplin replacement, we are only going to get a Post for him, rather get a first rounder and give a 21/22 KPB year old a chance later in the draft.

what first rounder? where is this coming from? are we getting one for chappy in a trade because i dont see richmond giving theirs??

are we getting one in fa?? cause the boffins have said

a) fa compo will be under value

b) its based on numbers in vs out

so in other words if we bring in a fa we dont get compo, if we dont bring in a fa then i still wouldnt hold my breath for great compensation.

i do agree we should have had been drafting many more kpp in the recent past, particularly with later picks.

Just wondering if a PP will now be offered given these unforeseen tragic circumstances.

When Troy Broadbridge passed away Melbourne were given the chance to list a mature-age state player (Shannon Motlop IIRC). That was after the draft though, so I have no idea how they'll approach this.

Actually i've just had a sudden thought after some epic moping around after the terrible news.

...Does this change Banners fortunes?

Not sure but I think this may galvanise the group (moreso) and make it hard for players to want to leave our club at this very sad time.

do you think we would be given a pre draft pick by the AFL like Melbourne were (Shannon Motlop) when Troy passed away

maybe greenwood and speight in a package deal speight not getting a game and would give us run and carry although both not getting a game at a average side but have heard there is a boys club at the roos at the minute and these 2 boys obvious arent in it. Although he does like melb life could want more game time like greenwood. I think we have a good chance to refresh our list abit this year as long as we dont pay overs lets go for it .We could get a few new players for not much loss ie jurrah psd or rookie a trade or 2 and a free agent or 2 . I think our young group mite surprise a few in a couple of years.

I don't think you can claim Greenwood isn't part of the boys club when Brad has admitted that Levi is (or at least was) his favourite player. I think he has suffered from being slightly underdone for a big part of the year coupled by the growth of Cunnington and our extremely good run with injuries. Like you I have heard that he has acclimatised to Melbourne life very well however, may seek a trade for more game time and in reality who can blame him. Makes sense to come back home.

In regards to his play his biggest strengths are his physicality, tackling, courage and fitness (which suffered most as a result of his injuries). He has shown that he can find the ball had 39 disposals against Melbourne a couple of years back but often has low possession games. Would be interesting to see how he went with our differing style this season. As has been mentioned by another poster his biggest weakness would be his kicking however, there was a period of time where he was laser like (don't know what happened). His best role is an inside mid but can also play in the backline. Has been ripping it up in the VFL and while I would prefer to keep him I can't begrudge anyone who leaves for greater opportunity living their dream.

These are the sort of plays that makes a lot of North supporters very keen on retaining him;

As an aside, my deepest condolences to John, his family and the rest of the Port Adelaide football club who would be understandably shaken at this time.

Out of the ashes...........

I am sure we have some boys who will soon become men amongst our playing group.

I'm against compensation for McCarthy.. would hate anyone to "put a value" on him in this way.

It is a tragic accident, there should be no silver lining.

IIRC the only reason that happened with Melbourne is that list for the coming year were already set. We haven't even had first list lodgement yet.

Can we please not talk about him like he was just a number on our list.

I know you don't mean to hurt and there is no malice, but this is bigger than a football club.

I am also devastated he is gone and i dont mean this post with any disrespect but the fact is McCarthy was a contracted player and this is a rare tragic accident which has occured. My question is what happens now with the AFL? Our depth was shot before this happened and now we have lost a quality player, surely the AFL would have to do something at least. We should receive a predraft selection for a player that has recently nominated for a draft or been delisted. Nothing to do with McCarthy and no malice, it is simply a list-related/AFL post
