Direct compensation would be very unfair on whoever had to come to Port Adelaide. Imagine a young bloke trying to fathom being a replacement for a young man who has tragically passed, trying to fill his shoes. It's just horrible to think about.

Might as well pass on his jumper number as well.

Just wondering if a PP will now be offered given these unforeseen tragic circumstances.

I think we had a reasonable chance of getting an end of Rd 1 priority pick if the AFL "formula" was reasonable given our last 2 years, last year was a compromised draft and we went from getting pick 2 to pick 6 because the GWS came in and even this year its a bit compromised given Melbourne and Doggies will use their compo picks to kick us down from pick 5 to 7. I think JMac's passing will lock in a priority concession and may move it from end of rd 1 to mid rd 1 pick. Can't see it being a pre rd 1 pick.

35 should be retired

I don't know about retired, but it should be put away for a few years. It's raw now, and no player would want to wear it, but it has history. 35 isn't just JMac's number. Imagine in 10 years, a new kid being handed the number 35, and learning about the JMac legacy and the heroics of Chad Cornes. It would be a cause of great inspiration and pride.

When we see 35 running on the field (whenever that might be) it gives us a chance to remember him. I don't want to lose that by retiring the number.

You've changed my mind and that's a hard thing to do. Agree. Good post.

I'm thinking it has to be put to the other clubs before the call is made...I seem to remember that being the case with Melbourne but I could be wrong?...PP end of 1st round would be appropriate maybe

When Troy Broadbridge passed away Melbourne were given the chance to list a mature-age state player (Shannon Motlop IIRC). That was after the draft though, so I have no idea how they'll approach this.

I'm not sure they will offer any compensation or even should, its tragic but list wise its no different to a player having a career ending injury.

If I remember the Broadbridge one, the death was after all of the drafts leading up to the following season so Melbourne couldn't add a player to its squad in the normal way, the AFL were right in giving Melbourne the chance of adding a mature age pick. We still have the drafts to come, so I think it will be looked at differently.

Tyson Goldsack is un-contracted, 25yrs 193cm would be a good get.
From memory we have enquired about his availability in previous years (I think)

I don't know if we will (or should) get compensation, it's not really important right now. However IF anything will happen I'd prefer it's driven by the AFL. I don't want the club put in the unenviable position of having to worry about the effect on the list and drafting when much more important things are obviously on their minds right now.

I think this is the best way to look at it. Ultimately, it was a career ending injury...

Can't believe people are sitting here bartering over compensation.

Human nature, some people look at things differently. We can't stop people discussing list management issues, we can only hope people are respectful

It appears Jolly is on our radar. Interestingly the club is confident back in Adelaide he can change is fortunes and has been led astray up on the GC.

What are his issues? anything other than a little immature?

It's been said before but ill.voice it again, this year we have a good chance to top up a few young mature recruits. Sumner, Rikawasikka, Jolly, Marshall, missing a few I know, however these kids could possibly improve enough to be good AFL players, if not they end up like the List cloggers and plodders like we already have. The only exception, they are arguably able to do the equivalent to the Logan's and Thomas' we currently have but have some scope for improvment.

A lot of players on the gc seem to lack work ethic

Maybe we can change that with jolly. It's worth the shot.
A lot of players at Alberton seem to lack worth ethic.

Maybe we can change that with eade. It's worth the shot.

You are right in that it does feel kind of macabre
However, if we are to have this thread, then his passing does enter into it as it is a part of the overall context of the struggle we will have to build upon.
We aren't able to comprehend the impact the tragedy will have on the players psyche, and the club personnel, before the point where the pain remains but the mourning starts to become fond remembrance of his love and friendship. At that point his spirit can then move those around him to stand taller and lift the chin, and friends and loved ones can carry on again.
I think the AFL will recognise that the issue before was always around our genuine need and what PP support the club needs, now it is what healing does the club need in addition to the PP.
We are participating in the delisting, drafting and trading process, so it has to be factored in, as uncomfortable as that will be.
The AFL is an ego driven monster for sure, but It still is a family and will be sensitive to how they handle the club to heal and carry on. No kid will want to be "the JM replacement pick kid", and I would doubt the AFL would let it be like that either.
But yes, bartering would be insensitive.

Valid point, we dont want to bring up work ethic until the perception of our club changes

I wonder if this tragedy will make the club re-think a delisting of a player. Maybe a Banner or Hitchcock may get a 1 year contract?

If he has any iota of talent in line with being listed originally as a 17YO selection, then we are doing the right thing looking into it to see what his issues are.

It seems we have a definite strategy to target South Aussies at hem moment - at least with the rumours.

Russell, Monfries, Jolly, Greenwood, Pat McCarthy, Lycett, even Jurrah can be argued as his family now live here....

I'm not sure of any serious rumours for non-SA boys at the moment, given we said we weren't chasing Moloney, and I suspect the Paul chapman stuff was jsut radio gossip.

Of that list it seems we could in theory get Russell, Monfries, Jolly, and Jurrah with out having to go near a trade table.

In practice we know that we target non-SA players as often as not, so if the rumours only link us to SA players, it means the rumourmongers have nothing and are just guessing.
