Our list has some serious issues now....:(

Fosdike and Kennelly are gone.

Cooney is gone (one rookie down)

Leaping Leo has Knee issues unlikely to play before round 6.

MOL unlikely to play round one ankle is a bit stuffed.

Our youngsters are going to get more of a chance this year.

But in all likely hood a top 8 finish even now looks unlikely.

Is there a way we can get compensation from the afl? Eg: an extra player?

Can we even elevate a rookie to replace Kennelly? (he isn't exactly injured :S)

Our team has some serious issues atm.

A lack of an experienced 2nd ruckman. (Currie and Pyke have big h0opes but who knows if they will cope at top level)
If jolly was to go down who knows what could happen...(Goodes moving back to ruck possible (not at center bounces just around the ground))

If Leos injury to his knee is true Grundy Will have to step up this year in the back line I think as he is our next most experienced option.

Playfair can replace MOL.

Shaw can replace Kennely.

It's times like these I wonder who's running our club, reminds me of an exchange from a certain classic comedy series ;)

*Disclaimer: the text that follows does not necessarily represent the views of the person posting it, it's just for fun!

Mr. Steinbrenner : Nice to meet you.

George : Well, I wish I could say the same, but I must say, with all due respect, I find it very hard to see the logic behind some of the moves you have made with this fine organization.

{trading crowd favourites like Schneider, dumping Nick Davis, recruiting a Shaw brother, cutting back on local rookies to save costs, membership price hikes...take your pick}

In the past twenty years you have caused myself, and the city of New York, a good deal of distress, as we have watched you take our beloved Yankees and reduced them to a laughing stock, all for the glorification of your massive ego!

Replace 'Steinbrenner' with 'Roos' and change 'New York Yankees' to 'Sydney Swans' (or any other sporting club around the world for that matter!) and it all fits! :p

Seriously, though, it's been fairly poor list management IMO to end up in the situation we're in right now, but I'm confident that we have a team where the 22 that takes the field each week will give it their all. If they play with the energy they showed in the elimination final against North in spite of a long injury list, then anything is possible. (Well, not quite anything...I'm too much of a realist for that! -- but it's not all doom and gloom!)

we,ve had a few retire who mabee should have made this decision before the draft, mabee theres a reason they didnt?.. on a brighter note, we gonna have a fair bit of cash to spare next season to 'buy' ready to go players, pretty important when picks will be scarce, dont lose the faith guys, we still got a pretty good squad and the futures not looking as bad as it seems to some! Go Bloods!

I also want to add in relation to Fosdike.

I'm sorry he's gone but he missed last year too.

Its not unfair to say McVeigh and Bird took a step to cover him last year and we are therefore prepared to carry on without him. We are down a list spot and it would have been good to have but somewhat we are prepared to cover this spot.

Kennelly on the hand we do not. And it was always going to be tough to find a player who was a replacement, he carries out so many functions none so more as rebound off the half back line. The way he plays is so crucial to Roos game plan.

Shaw is going to have to replace him but the disposal is not on the same level.

Wouldnt mind having pick 33 in 2006 draft back so we can NOT trade it for everitt and draft someone who can serve the club for 5-10 years (not two). Come on laidlaw and veszpremi!!!! Gee, doesnt goodes have to fire in 2009 for us to make an impact...

Our list isnt in bad shape really

- We have plenty of midfielders who are either AFL ready or close to it
- We have 4 Ruckmen (Jolly, Currie, Orreal and Pyke)
- Our defence is solid
- We strenghened our forward line by recruiting Lewis Johnston (who isnt ready but will be in 2010).

Guys like

Currie
Barlow
Murphy
Grundy
White
Thornton
Laidlaw
Schmidt
Smith
O'Dwyer
Meredith

are of these players were not in the best 22 in 2008 but they will all be pushing for selection this year.

Agree RUNVS, I know this is an internet forum where we can all vent our frustrations and I enjoy it for that, but its also good to read the positive posts more often, I cant wait for the season to start and i have a good feeling about our short term future, we also have plenty of cash freed up for next season when picks may be scarce, not all clubs can claim that!

Agreed. The Swans are in a far better position than most people realise. Sure losing Kennelly was a blow but we still have 3 halfbacks (Mattner, Malceski and Shaw) who are all proven AFL players.

The ONLY problem i see in the Swans short term future is in the backline. On paper our backline is very strong but there isnt alot of depth in the list if one of two of our defenders get injured (im still of the opinion that we should have kept Luke Brennan).

I think guys like Barlow, Meredith, DOK, Schmidt and Thornton should now all be pushing very strongly for consistent spots in the team.

To look on the positive in all this, it opens up another position for youngsters to push for.

Mattner last year was a replacement for Kennelly, and it still means he's coming through as the replacement, just a year earlier. Shaw as well will help, and Eski if he gets right.

I like doing these:

FB: Malceski, Richards, LRT
HB: Mattner, C.Bolton, R.Shaw
C: McVeigh, Kirk, Buchanan
HF: Playfair, O'Keefe, Jack
FF: Veszpremi, GRUNDY, Moore
R: Jolly, Goodes, J.Bolton
Int: Currie, Bevan, Barlow, Johnstone

Its alright, but unless all the good teams in the AFL relocate to Mars then we probably wont win a Premiership for a while.

To kick 159 goals in only 11 games: Grundy.
Out (injury/retirement): O'Loughlin, Barry, Fosdike, Tadhg.
Possible retirement: Crouch, Barry, Hall (Boxing), Ablett.

RUNVS, what position do you see White pushing for if not the ruck? KPP?

Im not really the right person to ask but people who watch the reserves games seem to hold White in high regards. Though i think its safe to say he will be a Key Position Player as we already have plenty of ruckmen and as far as i can recall when White played against the Kanagroos last year he didnt play in the ruck.

Just listening to the press conference here http://blogs.abc.net.au/grandstand/2009/01/swans-back-kenn.html

Roos said that neither Kennelly or Fosdike can be put on the LTI list.

See that is complete bullshit as it puts the Swans at a distinct disadvantage even before the first game of the season.

Thanks for that. I thought White looked pretty impressive - likely for no 2 ruck, but I am beginning to see that Currie probably is the option.

I haven't listened yet but I agree that it is unfair - Fosdike should clearly be considered an injury case. Better bone up on the rules before I get too annoyed though.

kennelly is a loss but if malceski can get back to his best or shaw can step up we might be able to cover him. fossy and coney had no impact on our 08 season anway so we're not losing anything there (from a playing point of view anyway)

hopefully we dont have a shocking injury run this year, but i dont think kennelly leaving effects our top 8 chances too much (although hes a bad loss). if jolly goes down i'd be worried tho, he's easily going to be our most important player this year.
if a few young players can stand up we'll go alright.

How stupid, Grundy will easily kick 300.

No idea

Thanks grim, was away from the computer for a while this afternoon... Roos sounded a little pissed (probably more so than he let on) but did acknowledge that he thought Tadhg was making the right call, think people can underestimate sometimes the toll that playing AFL footy takes on the body.

Have to remember also that Gaelic footy is the sport these blokes grew up with, I think Tadhg just wanted to play the game he (still) loves while he's still in his prime...

Right call maybe - I don't begrudge the guy wanting to return home and shoot for an All-Ireland medal - but horrible timing. Unless he has re-injured something over the past few weeks which has considerably changed the outlook on his continued sporting prospects, then there is no reason he couldn't have arrived at this decision earlier and thus allowed the club to draft an extra kid. As it stands he has left the club at a distinct disadvantage, not to mention the gaping hole he'll leave in our team.

If his body wasn't going to hold up to another season of AFL footy then fair enough. But to leave the decision this late is poor form.

Anyway it's all done and dusted. He's been my favourite Swans player for quite some years and I hope he gets that Gaelic championship he so desperately wants. Guess I still have Malceski...
