I would say tackeling and hardness at the ball wins flags.

So what's the plan for when we have the ball?

Also, I didn't say it wins flags, I said it is underrated. An accurate handpass is the difference in getting a quick break and attacking play or a turnover.

Im not disagreeing just think we need to get the ball first.

And yet his average disposal count, tackle count and scoring are all up this year compared to 2014... We can get rid of some of those without dumping the quality players.

Thank god for Ford. Was never sure I would utter that in one sentence...

There's multiple problems with this though.

1) His average disposals sit at just 19. Is that really enough for a player in his role in today's possession-rich game where spreading to space to be an uncontested possession cog is everything? 19...

2) A problem that has dogged him throughout his career is consistency...

But as I said, moving him on for a first or commensurately-credentialed midfielder (or forward) would be sound business.

oh c'mon don't give up that easy!!! I'm not gonna address all tribey's pts, however:
- he gets a lot more contested possesions and/or marks than our other hardest running defenders which is in his favor and something that has been required of his this season.

Except for Pittard who is the exception that proves the rule, it is hard to run and break lines when things are stagnant up field. Also see point one.

If his kicking doesn't appear as damaging or reliable (although according to stats he is as reliable as Jasper) see points one and two.

Also, I'm not with the idea that nobody can improve after 26/27 in footy. And at nearly 6'3" 87 kilos with reasonable pace he has all the right attributes to either improve or become more versatile in future.

Although a first rounder is alomst food for thought for most players, and I am all for a credentialed tall for. Our lack in this area keeps me up nights. I do see an inside mid as also being important but I am hoping that need might be offset if Ryder returns in anywhere near comparable form as 1st ruck.

I think skills are genuinely under rated. I would attribute hawthorns and geelongs recent premiership successes down to it. Just better skilled teams.

I think good hand passing is different than kicking

I think a team can become very good at handballing by spending a lot of time practicing it.

I think teams can become better kicks with a lot of practice , but only to a certain point. I think kicking is a skill you kind of need to recruit for.

People on this forum rant about a game plan - what wins premierships is execution of the game plan. If you can't successfully execute skills doesn't matter what else you've got you won't win consistently. It's the reason why we came 10th and the reason why Butcher and Mitchell were delisted.

Yes
and the reason why Butcher and Mitchell were delisted.

No

??? It's so hard not being sarcastic after reading a line like that. But I'm sure there's a deep perhaps spiritual side to that comment that I'm just not seeing.

I'm saying that an excellent hand balling team can be developed by prioritising it in training and spending lots of time on it , but a good kicking team requires good recruiting , and prioritising it and spending lots of time on it.

28-38 maybe. And that's at 24 years old after 81 games.

I bet the last guy picked in the draft wouldn't have made the same ridiculous mistake that O'Shea made against Carlton. Pick 56 isn't worth much, but I'd trade him for a half-eaten sandwich. And if nobody wants to give up a half-eaten sandwich for him, I'd delist him.

O'Shea picked up some currency with our coaches and fans off the back of some hard work and good form in 2013. Seems to have pissed all of that goodwill away with some really lazy, almost cocky efforts since.

Longmire in his post match presser on the weekend with almost a wry grin said it's funny how much better your skills get the harder you go at the contest or words to that effect.

Yeah I'm really not fussed what we get for O'Shea, getting him off the list is a win. He's the typical athlete first, daylight, footballer distant second.

If we get anything sub-pick 40 it's pants down lap around the table time.

Now I want us to trade Young and keep O'Shea, just for the lulz. Will be like gooey melted cheese in this thread :D

Was just about to comment on this too.

That's a big list.

Lobbe
Hartlett
Broadbent
Amon
Young
Neade
Clurey
S Gray
Jonas
Ah Chee

That's only ten!

Westhoff
Gray
Pittard

as "what would you give us?" options maybe.

Brutal if true.
very similar lists we have! haha

Like where this is going though. getting rid of the underperforming players and giving the others the kick up the arse they need to start playing well and consistently well

Yeah good shit. Love our group of players but it's gotta be results first and they'd be the first to admit they haven't kept up their end of the bargain.

That's it in a nutshell, O'Shea is an athlete trying to play football, he has his occasional good games, but they are too regularly overshadowed by his clangers, and the same clangers have been happening for 5 seasons now, including at sanfl level. :'(

The club needs to cut its losses and get what it can for him!

Agreed. Obviously it will only be a portion of these who actually get traded but it will put a rocket up the rest.

Spot on - They have only themselves to blame.
