You'd have to think a draft pick. If he has a good year then their second rounder will do it
If he has a good year I very much doubt he'd be leaving. The side is crying out for him to take the next step.

Faaaaark. Stupid spell check, and I can't figure out how to use the edit function on tapatalk yet. What I meant was that he will see less opportunity if those other guys also have real good years. But if butch, Harvey also have breakout years, and now with Ryder he used going to see opportunity. I see Clurey as being similar category.

Starting to think that we should've been ruthless and traded O'Shea to St Kilda for pick 22 when we had the chance TBH.
You have a very short memory! He was great in the last two final series. Especially 2013. Tough call!
I'm pretty sure O'Shea didn't want to go to St Kilda so a trade was never an option.Starting to think that we should've been ruthless and traded O'Shea to St Kilda for pick 22 when we had the chance TBH. Hombsch, Jonas, Pittard and Broadbent are all clearly ahead of him, and Impey/Krakouer/P. Stew are all borderline ahead of him. The perfect example of a player who has currency but who we could've afforded to lose. If he has another year like last year then his value is only going to drop when he comes out of contract at the end of the season and potentially goes looking for more opportunities.
We could've gone to the draft with that pick, which would've been 35 spots higher than our actual first pick, or we could've used it to get Gorringe who (despite being a flog) would give us an insurance policy in case Ryder cops a long ASADA ban and Redden continues to struggle with injury.
He wouldn't have got us pick 21 or I think we may very well have asked him if he was willing to be traded home.I'm pretty sure O'Shea didn't want to go to St Kilda so a trade was never an option.
I see no advantage to trading out a 10+ year player because his stock is high now. O'Shea is a proven finals performer and while he's the 20-25th selected player at the moment, that won't always be the case.
I'd trade O'Shea to bring in a player who'd make our team stronger but for pick 21? Nah.
Never be afraid to be ruthless to make the team stronger. But not just for the sake of doing deals.
These trades kill culture and leave us with blokes walking out after 7 years like another South Australian AFL clubi think we need to do a few of these trades for the sake of the playing list management. If players that could be, arent consistantly getting games then they will look elsewhere, and we run the risk of losing players for nix aka newton. if we have multiple players that are of the same age and profile as we do with oshea, then def replace him with a young player that wont be looking for opportunites until a few of our other players have moved on.
if this hypothetical pick 21 was flashed in our faces for oshea this year id be pissed if we didnt take it
It depends how it's done. If the player is agreeable and they see that they could go from a 10 - 12 games a year player to 22 games on a higher salary, then it'd be a win-win. The best time to trade is when you're a top team and have depth in a position. We've done it in the past with French and not doing it with Thurstans after the 2004 GF was the starting point of the rot IMO.These trades kill culture and leave us with blokes walking out after 7 years like another South Australian AFL club

Very pleased for Nathan Krakouer. Port Adelaide values of inclusiveness and hard work pay off again.
>implying the pick that got Hugh Goddard is a shitty draft choice
IMO O'Shea is exactly the type of player that is able to be traded. Has definite value as a footballer, but is potentially surplus to our needs.

'Here St Kilda, we've got too many good players so please take one off our hands for a relatively shitty draft choice. Would you like that gift wrapped?'
How did Port win all those SANFL premierships? Sure, we had good players but the culture that was built up with giving our players consistency was just as important. But it's not just 7 years when players walk out. We have lost players to free agency, although only in the first year of free agency, but Jack Gunston from the cows and more than one player from Brisbane have left early. The signings of Boak, Trengove and Carlile in our darkest days were important as they sounded a message that here was a place to be.These trades kill culture and leave us with blokes walking out after 7 years like another South Australian AFL club
