Unique poll. The best way to describe Thomas is that he's a wannabe top-shelf talent, caught in the body of someone with B minus footballing ability. Was rated 12-13 before his draft, and that's still a reasonable assessment. By contrast Murph is the real-deal - top-shelf elite midfielder, and future superstar. :)

Thomas is the kind of player when on song will win you games, but at this stage lacks the consistency.

Murphy is the type of player who will win other teams games because he is a shocking kick and constantly turns it over letting the opposition set up easy goals. Murphy is the player you wish your opponent always had.

Still playing the same old record over & over again, Ron. You need to get some new material before you put everyone to sleep.

If my side was up by 10 goals, I'd take Thomas in a heartbeat. Can really turn it on.

Can't comment on Thomas's disposal because every time I see him play he ain't anywhere near the pill.

The main difference between Murphy and Thomas is that Murph is consistent and is leadership material. Thomas at best is a flashy receiver type- should not have been picked up in the top 10 of the draft.

Murphy.

Thomas is just a flashy HFF. Murphy's disposal is brilliant at times and shocking at others (Kinda like what Travis Johnstone would be at times) whilst Thomas' is just above average but more consistent.

Brilliant? 'Shank' Murphy's disposal has never been brilliant, he is pretty much the worst kick in the league, imagine wasting a #1 draft pick on someone who cannot even complete the most important part of the game.

Round 12 tells the story :D

Poll results don't lie Ronald :D

Wow hard question this, let me see a hard at it player with good disposal skills, great evasive skills and vision. And a great junk time player who is a outside receiver at best, the choice is so hard to make.... but I think I will go for Mr M. Murphy.

Why anyone would want to compare a garden variety half forward flanker with an elite ball-winning midfielder has got me stumped....

Exactly. I remember the last Blues V Pies game. Malthouse put heavy tags on Judd, Stevens and Murph. By 3/4 time, Murph was cutting up the Pies midfield so bad, Malthouse had to move the Judd-tag onto Murph. Didn't really stop Murph, but Judd stepped up a level and gave the Pies "midfield" an almighty thumping. :)

Murphy is as soft as butter.

*My claim has a much credibility as yours, and just as much evidence to back it up.

Maybe he should mention Daisy from the Dogs Pies game earlier in the year. Daisy jumping out of the way against Brian Lake was one of the weakest things I've ever seen on an AFL field

Don't recall the incident. Perhaps you can provide some video?

Maybe I should just mention the 41% contested possession ratio, the high-ranking in hard ball gets and multiple marks back with the flight. Thomas is as hard as nails, you can't help but love the kid, and a lot of opposition supporters are starting to see the light. It's a shame you can't.

Parrot, you're right about Murphy carving us up, but you couldn't be further from the mark in saying we placed heavy tags on him. We don't even put heavy tags on Ablett, or Mitchell, or Hodge, or Harvey, or anyone! That's Malthouse, he doesn't believe in tagging. He played Rhyce Shaw on Judd, but it was very far from a heavy tag. You'll notice every midfielder carves us up. Has Dal Santo played a better match all year than his game on Saturday?

FWIW, Murphy is clearly ahead at this stage. But Thomas has far more improvement left in him, it's just a question of how much of it he fulfills.

you're wrong about the tagging, at least in the agmes against calrton this year. the first game espeically rhyce shaw showed absolutely no interest in doing anything but blanketing judd. in the 2nd game, in the last quarter judd's tagger was switched onto murphy who gave him a very hard tag and murphy still played good.

and as for the d1ckheads who bag murphy's disposal, you have got no idea. yes i admit he is prone to unleashing the odd floater but most times he is a super kick and there is no better kick at carlton to a leading forward. he came 5th in the comp this year for most assists in a team that has only one target inside 50. he just has to stop trying to drill every single kick and weight his kicks like judd does so perfectly.

and i think it's pretty obvious that everyone apart from the one-eyed pies supporters are admitting murphy is and will always be the better player. murphy is a super talent at finding the ball, clearances, defensive side, forward 50 passing, tackling and he is incredibly footy smart and creative. thomas is a much better mark, he is very clean with his hands below his knees, he is great in wet weather and he is better around goals.

Rhyce had 22 disposals in the round 4 match, to Judd's 26 (9 contested). Murphy had 22 (8 contested). He was certainly running with Judd, but it wasn't a hard tag in that he only focused on Judd. A hard tag usually shows a much higher contested disposal ratio, and given that Rhyce only had 2 tackles.... hmm.

Compare that to when Judd was tagged by Kornes, he got 24 disposals with 15 of them contested. Kane had 7 tackles.

Judd certainly got attention in our matches, but they were far from hard tags. Murphy got no more attention than Pendlebury did for us. Probably even less... given that Swan and Didak seemed to get the most.

lol, who was on pendlebury?? russell??:D

thomas can turn it on, big leaps, big marks, spectacular goals, great hair (so they say), but he is still inconsistent. marc murphy is beginning to warrant his number one draft pick status. although thomas has a bright future, i think marc murphy will go further, particularly under judd as a mentor now...
