I have watched Matt Wade bat and keep several times and he impressed me a lot. He is a great young talent for Australia.

As for the Going to the Ashes rumour, I've heard that one, and honestly hope its true. Even if he never plays a game he will get some vital experience. Its all about grooming the players for the future.

His batting is lovely and very sound technically, he is not likely to flake in a high pressure situation and that is exactly what you want. His keeping is good too. Every Keeper drops chances, every one of them, its a matter of which ones they drop, and the reasons for them. He is not a bad Keeper by any stretch, in fact I think he is a quite good one,

As for the fact he is an adoptive Victorian, hey im a NSW girl, and I think he is great.

Erk no....Paine hasnt proven himself in high pressure innings at all...

You mean apart from his double hundred..you mean apart from actually not dropping catches unlike Wade. I rate Wade but AS A BATSMAN. He is terrible behind the stumps.

I agree. Wade is a fantasic batsman but along way away from an international keeper. Paine is a really good batsman, and an international keeper. Paine has a higher first class score and has also played in a pura cup title as a batsman.

Paine made many valuable runs on a bowler friendly wicket at belerieve this year under huge pressure to win multiple matches for the tigers.

Exactly. That is no disrespect to Wade who could quite easily bat in the top 5 in test cricket for Australia in the future as he has the technique but first and foremost I want the keeper not to drop catches and Wade drops way too many to be anywhere near international standard.

Tim Paine, international standard for batting? Average of 30.04 in FC.
Tim Paine would be getting picked as a keeper as he is the best young keeper. Remember what happend when England picked a bloke because he could bat????

Tim Paine will not average 30 in first class cricket for the rest of his life. Fact!

And, so? Mark Boucher, Brendon McCullum, Prasanna Jayawardene and Mahendra Singh Dhoni all have less than ideal First Class averages yet they play for their respective nations.

Wicket keeping skills should always take precedence over batting skills.

Take Gilchrist out of the equation and that is a very normal average. Plus Paine will improve that average to high 30's or low 40's. But the point I am making is lets not pick a batsman who can keep who drops catches. Wade may even be in my side anyway, but as a batsman not a keeper. Keepers should be picked on keeping first and foremost and if they can average 40 as well then that is great, if not an average of 35 as a keeper with the bat is very good.

Not really impressed to be honest.

Has some issues with his keeping, and his batting hasn't been great at all.

What was he doing when he nearly killed Hilfy???

MIKE HUSSEY BEHIND THE STUMPS.

Whilst I agree that running all the way to fine leg to spear tackle Hilfy was a little silly, at least he showed commitment. A few AFL players could learn a thing or two from him.

I hadn't seen a lot of his keeping in the domestic comps, but while he's been playing for Australia I've been happy with it. His batting has been good, and probably affected a bit by his constant movements in the order.

And much like Thorne - who else would you have? Any other person to come in would be just as raw.

I had a brain fade and forgot Haddin isn't gonna be back for the tests...

God damn Australia miss Tim Paine. The surity he showed in the few games he played for Australia was exceptional. That innings he played with Marcus North in India was a real standout.

Bionic finger?

Wade has been fine, he has batted in nearly every position in the order, sure he has had some bad innings but who doesnt?

Still reckon he is a better opener than no7
Wade, Warner, Watson, Clarke, Hussey, Hussey

Is a better order but oh well. Its funny they moved the keeper to opener about 2 years ago and has been there ever since but now Wade comes in and starts doing well they shift the keeper again

But come the tests he will do well, that is his usual position in longer formats and with a decent tail behind him wont find himself left stranded

Hartley has age against him, while being nearly 30 isn't terrible it is something that counts against him when being put up against Wade or even Paine who are a few years younger. He was robbed to not be the Haddin replacement for the Test squad, even though Nevill has been good this year, Hartley is in my view the best keeper in the country and was coming off a shield final ton.

To the OP, I think Wade is easily the best option at the moment in the short forms, I like many would have Hartley as the Test keeper right at the moment but can't complain with Wade getting it. Obviously though Wade will need to cement his spot if Paine is able to get fit and play later this year, as we know he is well liked by CA and could easily come in off a few good games when he comes back. While I think in the short form Wade is best at opening, I can also understand why they prefer Watson and Warner... either way they need to pick a spot for Wade and keep him there for at least 10 matches or so, let him know his role so he can prepare for it.

After this series we don't play any more Tests til next summer, right?

So it's the best of all worlds: give Wade these three Tests and see how he goes. If he does well, we've found our next Test keeper. If he flops, the selectors have 5-6 months to work out where to go next. By that stage possibly Paine will be back, and even Haddin might be available should the selectors want to go down that path. Plus Nevill and Hartley....maybe they'll have a couple of SS games early next season to show what they've got.

I hope Wade does well but I wish they'd find a permenant spot for him in the batting order.

Haddin was just over 30 when they picked him for tests, whilst Gilly was 28. Being Hartley's age shouldn't be an impediment to being picked in the test side, especially if you can get 4 or so years out of him.
