I haven't had a chance to view the game again but I thought Matty was solid, didn't look overawed, or out of place and put in a solid performance given that he's been out of the 1's for a bit. Certainly open to discussion though, over to you all....

Being a mainly defensive player, it's hard to know how good someone is without watching them live, but my impressions were that he played well. I'd keep him instead of Batch when Grimes comes back.

servicable game by Matt. Dont know if it will get him another gig yet though. Lets face it if Grimes and Newman are fit, then servicable aint gunna push your name up the order. ;)

His disposal lets him down.

I think he'll come out for Grimes or Newy. Might get another gig if Grimes doesn't get up. I'm not very confident when he has the ball down there

Also, I know he's been training as a forward but I reckon Griff is a better and safer option than Dea at the moment.

Really? Interesting....
I actually reckon he has very neat disposal.
He played a good game yesterday... filled his role well. I didn't see him get badly beaten at any stage. (Not sure who he was on most of the time)
At the moment he is a very reliable guy to bring in when needed but in the position he plays, it is hard for him to really impress and therefore to stay in when injured guys return.
His numbers at Coburg are always much bigger so - is he going through the middle more there whereas when he get's elevated he is given specific lock-down defensive assignments?

It's almost like if he were given a longer run in the ones he would produce more but for that to happen we need more extended injureis which of course we don't want.

A long post to basically say.................. I dunno!

Thought he was solid. The only way he is going to achieve his potential is by playing that level consistently. Needs game time at AFL level. Play him and we will be rewarded. I rate him higher than most though.

He will improve with experience to of course:thumbsu:.

With Ellis having a breakout game I am more confident with him getting more time up the ground.

Dea's time will come, some of the other guys do not have a mortgage on the backline either nor will they be around forever. I like Dea's defensive mindset at times and desperation, a bit like Morris.

Things are developing well atm:thumbsu:

I am a fan of Matty. Was serviceable yesterday but as mentioned earlier when Newy and Grimes are ready to come back in Dea will be one of those to lose their spot.
At this stage I would say he is a solid depth player with plenty of upside. Has been playing well at Coburg in a more attacking role so if he continues to develop that side of his game along with his existing bravery, desperation and attack at the contest we could have a player. Not a natural like Ellis, Vlas and Concs so a little more time to develop is needed.

Meh - no dud but...just ordinary. Doesn't seem the kind of player who'll ever initiate anything or make the play as it were. One of those neutral types who's neither here nor there.

Helbig would be in the same boat but at least he brings a bit of aggro.

I think Helbig plays the role better. I like Dea. I like how he speaks in Coburg huddles and he is real leader at VFL. I think he just doesn't have the footy smarts for AFL level. He is indecisive about when to run off and defend and when to attack the ball at times.

I would preserve with him at this stage. Has more upside then Petterd, but less then Helbig and Bacthelor imo. I think with Morris, Newman and Houli in the side - there is only room for one of the above 3.

Davey took him to the cleaner's this week in the first half. At Coburg this year, even though he would get alot of the ball, so would his opponent. Still a long way off. When Mcintosh builds a tank and some size he will be ahead of Dea as well. That would leave Petterd, Batchelor, Helbig and Mcintosh ahead of him. Unless they change his position (e.g. midfield) or are happy to keep him on the list for back up his future in pretty uncertain imo.

I think the club is going to have to make some tough calls at the end of the season on some of these kids who are on the edge. Dea is one of them. There are four or five others as well.

I thought Dea played well in the backline. He didn't make any errors with his disposal from what I saw on TV. He also laid 3 tackles which is more than some of our players average. I am not sure who he was playing on exactly but I think he was only on Davey for a short amount of time. Davey didn't do anything in that time. In comparison, I thought Dea played better than Batchelor. Batchelor played on Dawes and Howe and was poor one on one, resulting in goals to his opponents. If Newman and Grimes both come back into the team, Dea and Batchelor might be two that make way.

We dodged a bullet ..We won a game with Dea playing. We will not win many with him in the side.Sorry dont rate him.Fills me with no confidence at all.Not a fan.We will not be at our club next year.

No he doesn't helbig fumbles and ***** up, Dea can play at the level quite comfortably

Think you'll find that Morris was on Davey(well he was every time I looked up at him).

As for Dea, think he may be an Enright type player if given the chance. Reliable HB who gets little hype or praise but does the job every week and before you know it has 100-200 games to his name and is a vital part of the side. Problem is that he just never seems to get a reasonable run at it. For mine he did enough on the weekend to hold his spot even with Grimes Petterd and Newman coming back in.

One game in a row! The good sides win while giving players like Dea game time, flying under the radar.
Prior to this year he hasn't shown a heap either but decision time on Matt is a way off yet, but unless he's used for trade I can't see him being delisted to make room. There's a few others ahead of him on that score. Didn't notice him much yesterday, good or bad.

Morris went to Davey in the second half after Dea played on him in the first. Davey, along with Jones would have been their best players in the first half kicking 2 goals (should have been 3) in the second quarter. Extremely over rated game by Dea. Has had trouble with quick small forwards at Coburg. E.g. Dennis-Lane kicked 5 on him vs Sandringham in round 1 this year. He's miles away still.

Some people have no idea - has played very little AFL football and will be a great player for our club.
Great??? Well if he turns out to be a great player we will be a powerhouse to rival Geelong. He would currently be behind 90% of of our list.Davey cut him up in the first half then he went on to Jetta who started to get touches. He has a long way to go.He needs to start to show something real soon or he is gonsky.Brutal reality of AFL.

Morris was on Davey initially. They interchanged throughout the first half and got caught on transition like we tend to do a lot with our comical game plan and lack of forward pressure.

Dea was solid when the ball was in his vicinity. The poor kid plays one game in a row how can he improve?

Like Griffiths, I think they are costing these two kids development. In my opinion. I think both should be best 22 players now.

Project player nearing the point of becoming a player, needs an extended run now to see if he is worth persisting with or moved on.

Not surprisingly for such an inexperienced player that hasn't had a sip of senior footy for a while he looked a touch off the pace, but not as much as in the past when making the step up. Probably a 50-50 game.

Hardwick favourite due to his rig, hardness and attitude, done everything asked of him without having a breakout game or standout impact at senior level, might not have it in him, need to have a real good look because a lot of time has been put into him and he's put a lot of time into his game. Has gone from NFI to dour to attacking in the VFL, still in the dour mode at AFL. Onus prob goes back on him to take his opportunities now because he may not get as many as expected.

Hope he goes on with it, be a nice little success story instead of another wasted mid range pick.
