I just don't see much in him, he's as vanilla as they come to me with no outstanding attributes that make me want to persist with him. I think he's a very good VFL player, but I don't ever see him being a good AFL player. Wouldn't blink if he was delisted this year but the coaches seem to like him so I think he will get another year.

Just because someone isn't a best 22 player doesn't necessarily mean we should move them on - you need to have handy squad depth and role players who can step up and do a job when needed and who put pressure for spots into the best 22.

That being said, I can see him being in our best 22 by the end of next season as another lock down defender. Has that competitive streak in him and borderline crazy bravery. Definitely needs to add a bit more to his game like finding more ball and creating more run. Batchelor will/should also be gunning for this spot as he definitely went backwards when the club tried to turn him into an undersized KPD.

We all love Newy but he is starting to show signs of decline and next year may be his last. Either way, he shouldn't be getting a game if not on merit. Dea and Batchelor would be my 2 picks for the guys who will take that spot in the future.

This was something they worked really hard on at VFL level with him. He had some very big possession games off HB so maybe just maybe he will come on but I dont see it either.

Curious about peoples thoughts on matty?
I think next year he will be more of a regular in our side!
By sending him to rio does that mean the club see a big future in him?
I can see him taking newys spot next year

Should get more game time IMO.

Can't trade him because too low value like Griff. Too much upside to let him go atm IMO

I personally didn't rate DEA at first, but he's changed my opinion dramatically lately and agree with other posters, in that he plays a position that we have good depth ATM.
I think if he kicked a few more goals we'd all be singing his praises a lot more.
I can't remember a game in the last two years where I've thought "f&ck this guy off already, he's a list clogger"Clearly a ready made replacement for newy.
Very much in the same career stage as batch who I rate very highly and I must be watching other games to other when he plays as I can't understand the logic in playing Ricky bobby over him when batch has him covered for coolness under pressure, disposal, age and future prospects.

Don't think we'll be getting rid of him anytime soon:

Tim Clarke says: “Matty’s a star.
He got told before the season that we wanted his main focus to be improving his offensive game, and he went on to average 24-25 touches per game this year off half-back.
He consistently beat his opponent, he did everything he had to do, he just couldn’t get into the back six in our Richmond side.
When he did, he played a good game against West Coast over there (in WA), but he got injured and then missed two or three weeks.
So, he struggled with continuity at senior (AFL) level this year, but the improvement he showed with his football was terrific.
I can really see Matty playing a lot of senior footy in the next couple of years.”

Nor should we. Kid can play.

Dea to replace Newman next year. At least he knows he has to improve his offensive game.

I remember on the B&F night, Richo was talking to Newey and he mentioned that Dimma is going to play him up forward a bit more.
I think Dea is going to come in and play alongside Newey which could fastrack his development.

Actually think he could be a replacement for Tucky in the midfield. That being said Arnot and Helbig deserve a crack at that position too.

I actually re watched the West Coast game a week ago and he was very very solid that night. The biggest problem is he won't get better without AFL game time and he will just dominate VFL level from now on.
