Travis Cloke is our new VFLW senior coach and a specialist coach with the men's program.

Essendon Football Club is proud to announce former Collingwood Premiership star Travis Cloke as its VFLW senior coach for the 2023 season.

The 35-year-old will also join the Bombers’ AFL men’s program as a specialist coach.

Cloke played 256 games across Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs, retiring in 2017 with a Premiership, two All Australian selections, a Copeland Trophy and four Collingwood leading goal kicker awards.

Since retiring, Cloke has switched to coaching, starting as a VFL/next generation academy development coach at the Pies before taking on the head coach position at NAB League side Eastern Ranges.

Over the past two years, Cloke has led the under-17 and under-19 female and male Eastern Ranges programs.

Head of VFLW Georgia Harvey said the club was excited to welcome Cloke to the Bombers’ family.

“We are thrilled to have Travis on board as our VFLW senior coach,” Harvey said.

“He brings a wealth of experience as a player and as a coach, leading both female and male programs at the Eastern Ranges in the NAB League, demonstrating his ability to bring the best out of his players.

“We look forward to welcoming Travis into the club and working towards our 2023 VFLW season.”

Hopefully this goes a bit better than the last welcome thread

The Essendon Football Club is thrilled to announce that recently retired defender Michael Hurley will remain at the Bombers in a coaching role.

Hurley will join the coaching panel in a development role, working predominantly with the club’s first-to-four-year players through the Jack Jones Academy.

Hurley said he was delighted to come on board as a development coach and work with the Bombers’ young list.

“After spending the last 14 years at the club as a player, I’m thrilled to start my next journey as a coach and give back to the club which has given me so much,” Hurley said.

“This is a new and exciting chapter for the club. With Brad coming on board as senior coach, I look forward to working with him and the other coaches to drive standards and get the most out of our playing group.

“We have a lot of potential on our list and I am determined to create an environment that allows our developing players to become the best player and people.”

Josh Mahoney says:
General manager of football Josh Mahoney welcomed Hurley’s addition the coaching panel.

“We are thrilled to have ‘Hurls’ on board as a development coach and to work with our first-to-four-year players,” Mahoney said.

“He’s a much-loved figure here at Essendon, experienced the highs and lows of AFL football and we look forward to having him continue his career in the red and black as a coach.

“This appointment along with the addition of Travis Cloke are examples of our further investment into our football development program”

Cronyism.

Hurley may be cronyism, but I still wouldn’t begrudge him this position. If he started his coaching journey at another club people would be complaining that we didn’t get him.

I think it's a good fit, especially if he's involved in the Windy Hill induction stuff, imparting values, teaching a bit of the club history and so on. Player welfare is also a strength of his leadership. If he happens to work with the crop of young defenders on their craft that's not a bad thing either.

He's a fabric type person.

I do think it's interesting that we have Bellchambers, Stanton and Fletcher as well though. Plus Cara, if he counts. Might be a bit much. Not sure we need ruck specialist while we have Phillips on the list either.

I think most of the people who pay attention to assistant coaching positions would have thought it was a good thing that he started elsewhere.

Yea I can agree with you in that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a run in VFL.
Thats if he doesn’t go back to his junior club, McLeod in NFNL.

Hey Siri, Google "’Michael Hurley’”

hmmmmmm….

Just reading new article on Anthony Munkara and with the Davey boys incoming and Tex already here, I would love the club to be bold and try to get a veteran indigenous guy and get the club back to what we were so proud of in the 90's and early noughties. a proud indigenous culture and embrace the different cultures on the list.

My first thought was ask Shaun Burgoyne what he's doing

As a left field one, wouldn't mind looking at hiring someone like Cam Smith as a tackling coach. Really specialise, see if we can turn the game in some way in that regard. Plus, being arguably the best captain in domestic sport in Australia, he could help the lack of leadership here.

I liked the appointment of Simone McKeniss to the coaching panel, means we are finally exploring options outside our lane. Right behind your idea, Billy Slater did/does do this at St.Kilda

Didn't the Saints get Billy Slater in a few years ago to do something similar?
