Mitch Brown and de-listing

he hesitated in signing it so i'm guessing it was a low amount.

the whole reason he got delisted was because he didn't sign quickly enough. If he'd signed on the spot he'd have got the contract. He um'd and ah'd and then Mitchell came on the market. Really only has himself to blame.

Eh, I don't think it's that straight forward. The issue wasn't that he didn't sign quickly enough, it was that he was initially told he would not be offered a new contract, which obviously lead to some decisions to be made by his family (that being that they could move to Melbourne and she'd play for Collingwood's netball side). Then they come back and say "Oops, we actually do want you back" you're going to need some time to work it all out since your wife has just made a commitment on the other side of the country. So you mull it over and finally decide you'll stay in Perth and play for the Eagles, and just as you're about to accept they say "Oops again, actually we don't want you."

I imagine if they'd just offered him a new contract in August instead of telling him he wouldn't be required he would have signed it pretty quickly.

I did read the article and it came across as Mitch Browns own personal experience. I'm just stating that for probably 90% of people that are delisted/not offered a new contract they know the writing is on the wall. It's a tough life being an older bloke on an AFL list while struggling to break into the best 22. The club comes before any one player.

Just read the article, then maybe you'll understand.

What was worse for Brown was they refused to trade him to St Kilda previously

That was in 2012, things changed a fair bit in the the 4 years since then.

Great read on how most careers end in the AFL.

For all we all hear about the greats of the game who get to retire weeks in advance and get a chance to think about what to do in their next life (which is fantastic and all), the majority of players don't get to leave on their own terms--their careers are decided by an oft-split second decision--and thus they have no real time to plan their transition life after footy.

Bloke shares an Insta account with his mrs.
Delisting worthy of that alone

sad to hear about mitch but the reality is which club doesnt do this to their players.

we've been ruthless as of late but its the only way you build hunger in the squads
obviouslythis happens at all clubs but its still interesting as to how players cope when they've playing footy half their life

For some reason I thought this guy was still on West Coast's list. Am I the only one that thought this?

I don't really bother keeping up with delistings and such from clubs other than my own.

At least you aren't in a paid job in the media and don't know who's on our list.

There were journalists this year saying McGinnity was a chance for selection after some good games at East Perth (he was delisted end of last season).

That's one way of spinning it. Another way is he decided to walk out mid contract, couldn't get a trade done, then chose not to leave the next year when his contract was up and stkilda were still sniffing and he still had trade value.

By 2016 it was too late. Played cat and mouse with the only team willing to sign him (Eagles) stuffed around too long and the offer was taken off the table.

Unlucky not to get picked up by somebody but he did make his own bed to some extent.

Moved to Melbourne this year so his wife could play netball for Collingwood

That's some quality player management there from West Coast.

Obviously it's a cutthroat business and tough decisions are made, but to flip flop on a guy like that who has been with the club 10 years just seems like a jerk thing to do.

You'd think the AFLPA would get involved in something like that but they're a toothless tiger so no surprises.

So what do we do. Turn down Sam Mitchell? Come on mate, any club in the league would have done the same thing.

I remember a few years back when a journalist (I think it was Jon Ralph) said the Eagles were missing Chris Judd and Tyson Stenglein from their midfield.

These blokes are footy journalists and are expected to know these things. It boggles the mind how often they make these kinds of mistakes.

The problem wasn't picking Mitchell over Brown. It was for some reason telling Brown he wouldn't get a contract, then coming back 6 weeks later and telling him he would get a contract and to take his time deciding, only to come back and say "oops sorry you took too long."

I'd love to know why they initially told him no, then told him yes six weeks later. That's amateur hour.

You're assuming it's amateur hour on the Eagles side of the fence

They all do it. In fact Brown would have known several players that have experienced the same. You'll get another deal quickly changes to we'll re-list you as a rookie to the old we are heading in another direction once a late minute scenario pops up example a jake stringer this year or Mitchell last.

You'll get looked after if you've got talent and have currency soon as another club won't list you they'll treat you like the bastard child they don't want. Standard AFL behavior

Brown is a little unlucky there are a few players he deserves a list spot over in the league. But in the end these things happen, clubs have to do what bests suits their interests.

We've been pretty good over recent years. We tried really hard to do the right thing by Brownie and knocked back a few decent offers from interstate clubs preceding '16 in favour of retaining him, but as you rightly asserted, in business tough calls are made. This is reality - at least clubs are getting better at helping facilitate post-footy skills development/study.

What we need more than investigation and witch-hunting is to offer professional athletes more support when they retire. It's like coming off a long-term cocaine addiction.
