THE Sydney Swans have had few opportunities to snare players under the father-son rule in recent years, so the club’s recruitment and coaching staff are keeping a close eye on 16-year-old Tom Mitchell.

Tom’s father Barry played 170 games for the Swans and was a club best and fairest winner in 1991. And Tom is showing all the signs he will be as good a midfielder as his Dad.

I'm really happy about this news, even at such a young age he seems to have all the ingredients to become a very good footballer.

Imagine the uproar on Big Footy if we acquired his services via the FS rule? :D

Why would there be an uproar? It's about time we benefited from a decent F/S pick. Exciting prospect it seems...

How many games did Mitchell play for Carlton?

EDIT - 38 Apparently.

Just wanted to make sure the filth couldn't get their hands on him.

Its always good when we can have a crack at a talented kid before anyone else. But only time will tell if anything comes of it.

Looks like you guys have a great find their. The next two years will be very telling for the future of Tom in regards to his AFL ambitions.

I would be very interested to know if their are any other teams who would be looking to take a bid for Tom under the new FS system. WS and GC could potentially be a big problem for Sydney with the number of picks they have. They could easily offer a low pick and make Sydney use your first or second rounder on him.

About bloody time! I have always liked the father son rule, but as we all know, we haven't gained much out of it. Here's hoping some more may come through. Does Paul Kelly have any sons?:D

Hopefully he'll be touted as a top 5 pick so it wont matter :)

Edit: If he entered the 2011 draft, with the concessions that GWS will get our first pick would be very low anyway.

Paul Kelly has at least 4 sons.

As for Tom Mitchell he is coming in at the perfect time due to draft concessions. Odds are the Swans first pick in the 2011 draft will be something between 15 and 25 (as GWS will have most of the early picks) and by the sounds of it Tom Mitchell is worth a lot more than that. Even if we do have to use our first round pick to get him it will still be a bargain.

Well it's two years out and he is currently the best player eligible for that draft in terms of U16 performances. Allot could change between now and then but Sydney should be happy to use there first or even better second round selection.

Brett Kirk has a son, he's only about 7 or 8 ... he beats Ed Barlow in one-on-ones at training all the time, and likes to push Ed around.

Talked to a teacher of his from Hale the other day and apparently talks about "when I'm in Sydney" already! cocky little bugger but i guess thats a good thing.

So far seems far and above the best WA player for his age group too, def would be a top 5 pick if the draft was done now and a good chance of pick 1!
