Not sure anyone rates Shiel.

To be honest I think most of GWS's midfield is very overrated. I mean what has Whitfield every really done? Kelly was touted at one point as being potentially the best player in the competition one day and he hasn't gotten anywhere near that. Was never too concerned with Hopper and Taranto either. I am not sure how GWS's midfield got this reputation as being full of talent as none of them are the sort of midfielders who can win games for you all on their own.

Agree in general but I think Taranto is very very good

I think they could have been, but they were so poorly coached for so long, it's too late now.

Possibly. The problem I had with Shiel when he played with GWS and it seems to have gone over with him at Essendon is he looks great when the team is playing well. He looks like he could be AA. However when the team is playing badly Shiel just disappears. He is no where and he can't be relied upon for one second to help drag his team into a position where they can win.

GWS are full of these sort of players (especially in the midfield), players who will play well when the team is playing well but when the team isn't playing well there is no one who puts their hand up and says "come with me" and plays their arse off and leads by example.

It'd hard to find that extra fire in the belly for an expansion club I reckon.

As much as I dislike the man Gary Ablett Jnr did it for Gold Coast. Gold Coast were largely terrible but there were so many games where Ablett managed to drag them over the line by being strong willed.

Was thinking about him as I was typing, I think in his case more was at play, e.g legacy, reputation, etc.

I find this general topic to be really interesting as I think we all instinctively know that in the top teams there are quite a few players in each team that are made to look better because of the other players around them and if that player went to a bottom team their performances would dip considerably because they don't have the top players around them to lift them up.

I am thinking of Prismal as an example, he was a fringe Geelong player but his performances seemed really good and there were a lot of clubs after him, him eventually landing at Essendon but we quickly found out when he reached Essendon that Prismal was not the player many hoped and that he needed the amazing players at Geelong in order to perform at the level he was at when at Geelong. When he was no longer in an amazing team his performances dipped considerably.

It is an interesting discussion, discussing what players would be as good in a bottom team as they would be in a top team and what players need great players around them to be considered really good players themselves.

Not sure what you mean, all the players we've got from Geelong have turned out to be guns...

Cbf doing each team but the most overrated players imo are Kozi Pickett and Heeney

The most underrated is Tuohy and prior to this year cause of his AA selection I would’ve said Maynard by a mile. I felt like I was the only non pies person to rate him for some reason.

Commentators seriously under rate Tuohy.
They treat him like a bit of a joker and novelty.

Reality is he's very good athlete, incredibly skilled and a very smart accomplished player.

Gives me the shits because 9/10 times I get irked when commentators over rate and over hype certain players that aren't that good.

Tuohy is the exception to this.

Although he technically isn't a Melbourne player anymore, I'd say that Luke Jackson is very overrated at the moment. He gets a ridiculous amount of media hype but the reality is that he's probably had only 3-4 really good games so far in his career.

Quite frankly, I've been much more impressed with Pickett's first three years than Jackson's first three years.

zero basis? I didn't provide explanations for the players listed so don't just single one player out just because you happen to go for that club.

Zero basis because you can’t provide any reasonable argument to support such a claim.

There’s just no grounds to claim gray, a player who would and should have had a brownlow around his neck if he had a bigger profile is overrated.

can't provide? or didn't provide?

Overrated doesn't mean I think they weren't a good player. Robbie Gray was a good player but I always felt that they could never make up his mind. He was a forward, then a midfielder, then a forward again. His top form window was also very narrow. Yes, I know he had a knee reco but he basically did nothing until he was 24 or 25. A little bit like Petracca who was wasting away doing half forward craft the first 5 years in his career.

For me Robbie Gray went missing too much within games. And I don't agree with the brownlow claim. Nonetheless, brownlows don't mean anything anyway. I mean Wines won it last year and wasn't even a top 50 player this year.

But if you do believe in the brownlow as an indicator, below shows you his tallies, which supports everything that I've said.

Freo doesn’t have overrated players.
Wearing the purple you have to be pretty special to even be recognised.
Fyfe won a second Brownlow and had the best votes per a game average for his career of anyone ever not only was that not rated he couldn’t even get the front page of his home state paper.

Pavlich one of the best utilities of all time saved our footy club 6 AA 6 BNF
350+ games and gets the same kudos as richo.

Brayshaw has just won MVP, BNF, 22U22 captain and many haven’t got him in their top 15 players for 2023.

He got an AA bench spot so he will need a Brownlow or coaches award in 2023 to give him a starting spot in the AA.

It doesn’t worry me but feel for some of the players

Which year should he have won the Brownlow?

2014 when he won the afl coaches association award for a 24.9d 1.7goal 5.8 clearance season that, off the top of my head only Dustin Martin and Ablett jr, two future hall of famers, have since come close to / matched.

The year they shockingly gave it to Priddis, which was widely mocked.
