Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Not necesarily, they may use it within the next 3 years. If I were a betting man they will be further down in 3 years time. Geelong may feel they are okay now and wish to bank it for next year.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I thnk they will use it after the gold coast and western sydney draft concessions so their 2 first round picks are more than likely between 10-20 and the best 17 year olds havent already been taken out of the draft.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

They also get a pick after all the first rounders (before the 2nd rounders) if Ablett is deemed a Tier1 player, which he will. It is a similar compensation to Judd deal with West Coast.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

with ablett now confirmed, what compensation to geelong get? i dont want out pick getting pushed back any further, because whatever pick they get, theyll want to use it this year since theyre on the way down.
They will probably get a pick straight after their first, and another at the end of the first round. Which'll be like 24+31.
Or, they could wait 2 years, until GWS have finished their draft pillaging and they've dropped a few spots, and get something like 9 & 18.
They'd be stupid to use them now.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Perhaps I'm just being greedy, but another pick at some capacity would be lovely.

Smith or Atley would be sensational selections at our first pick. I'm definitely hoping that eventuates.

It would be nice.... more chance of that happening than of getting an opposition player to the club IMO.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Can anybody tell me, with Geelong getting 2 first round draft picks for Ablett, does that push our first pick back or do they take theirs after us?

Will probably depend on whether they want to use it this year or not...

One of the selections can be taken after Geelong’s usual first-round pick (dependant of ladder position), while the other will be placed in the middle of the first round regardless of where the Cats finish on the ladder.

The selections can be used in any of the next five national drafts, or they can be traded to another club.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

By my reckoning Geelong would have Pick 13 and 24 in the 2010 Draft.

The compensation is a bit skinny for a player of Ablett's quality.

There is a chance they could use Pick 13 this year - either as a draft pick or part of a trade.

Think they will probably sit on the second compensation pick.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Actually I think it would be pick 9 and 14 in 2010, but it could be say Pick 9 and 2 for Ablett, which is still not his value.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I've attended a few Clarence games this season, predominantly when they play in Launceston, and whilst it may look like I'm basing this judgement on the surname alone, I've really liked the look of Charlie Riewoldt. He's quite a bit smaller than Nick and Jack, but his marking is outstanding for a medium sized player, very quick on the lead, and when he obtains added endurance I can really see him pushing up and having bursts in the midfield. He's not as highly rated as the aforementioned Riewoldts, but he's shown that he's capable of producing some exceptional performances (four goals against NT at the U18 championships)

Probably not the type of player we're after, but if we were to get another late pick during trade week, I think we could certainly do a lot worse.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I think we will hear a lot more from our recruiters and Hird about getting a ruckman - We need to get GC taking Gorringe before our pick. If it all about midfielders they may hold off.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Reminds me of Voss but he doesn't seem to be as clean as Brodie Smith.

This is my opinion based on limited vision.

I honestly don't know. I have not seen any of them play. Just thought I'd pop it in for everyones viewing. Seems like there is a few decent mids coming through. We probably need to take a leaf out of (was it Geelong or Hawks) book, and pick players who can kick effectively.

Won the 'clean hands' contest at draft combine.

Still think Smith is the one for mine, some knocks on the kid (Caddy) that people are unaware of, still; the kids can play football.

Ok then what are the knocks?

HFF, i know your unashamed love of David Myers is present around here for all to see but where do you see the main differences between Smith and Myers at the same age? Or where do you see Smith playing in 3 years time when he grows another 3-4 cm's and adds some bulk to his frame. Interesting to note Smith played in defence in the 2009 champs. IMO I dont like his kicking action particuarly the ball drop, it kind of hangs there for a bit before he kicks it rather than guiding all the way down and he seems to rely on speed to break away rather than evasiveness, wont do that at AFL level.

Have heard from some people that he has a bit of FIGJAM about him, am not knocking him at all for his footballing ability. He has been a little selfish in his football but has seemingly worked on these and found the team side to the AFL game and has really grown heaps in 2010 from maybe a mid second round to a first round somewhere.

ALSO

On Myers V Smith

Both very similar players IMO if your going down that track. Both able to play across half back but both look better as inside midfield roles. Both have awkward kicking actions and both seem to just "throw it onto the boot" in the couple of games I have DL from Ivew S.A.

I am not entirely sure where Smith will end up at AFL level, in fact I am seriously considering/hoping we take someone else in the draft (names shall not be revealed however :D).

Is that a bad thing. Didn't teams let Buddy Franklin slide a little because of this? Nathan Buckley another notable FIGJAMMER. They turned out alright.

I would love someone with a bit of arrogance.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

And if a kid has too much arrogance, it will quickly get thumped out of him playing against the big boys of the AFL. Plus Hirdy will sort it out...

If Atley doesnt slide to 8 i think Caddy will be coming to essendon.
