Won't help with equalization when they aren't doing anything to reign in the northern academy player access.
Heaps of Fun's equalisation plan:

  • The bidding rights to best NGA prospects in each draft are awarded to bottom four six sides based off a lotto. After six picks they go into open draft. Aligned clubs can Cat B overlooked NGA prospects.
  • Father/son should be limited to one first rounder a year that has to be paid in like picks. Current F/S rules apply after first round.
  • Northern Academies are also limited to one first rounder a draft, apart from Brisbane and Sydney who already have F/S players, bidding starts in the second round for these teams. These are also paid in like picks.
  • After 2040 for Gold Coast and 2041 (recognising each club has had ten years of existence to develop 100 game players and another 20 years for their children to start reaching draft age) for GWS they join Brisbane and Sydney in only being able direct access to Northern Academy players after the second round.
Inequitable distribution of NGAs addressed, more relief for bottom sides, double dipping of Brisbane and Sydney addressed and continued support to grow the game in NSW and Queensland that doesn't affect the balance of the competition.

Why don’t we just abandon the draft entirely and return to zones at this point.

What a f***ing nonsense this league is.
While we're at it, let's just go back to having 12 Vic teams playing at their old Suburban Grounds.

Just for confirmation, we have lost Tassie:

'The new zones have been created due to Tasmania's impending entrance to the AFL, which saw North Melbourne lose its access to that region. Under the new zones, each club will have a metropolitan and either regional or remote area allocated to them, with one fewer club to be in the Northern Territory, and Darwin set to be unallocated.'

There goes our conveyor belt of free talent.

So where do we gain?
I suppose nobody gets tassie now, there's isnt much incentive to say no taking players from there now that there's a home team.

Why are NGA zoned?

Make it a free for all and clubs have to pay up at draft.

That way there's no Gerrymandering bullshit.

Bingo. Still yet to have it explained to me why the AFL can't run academies and the players enter an open draft.

Expect it wouldn't benefit the northern clubs.

You're a North fan aren't you? We're not supposed to gain, we're another game out of 9, weekly for 20 odd weeks a year which happens to generate billions of dollars.

Makes sense, so no chance!

Absolutely love the use of "Gerrymandering", how very "West Wing" of you, old boy.

Spend more time with them and nominate them earlier, tough ask on us, given we don't even have a zone!
Given we scrambled at the last minute to put dibs on Sander, it won't matter.

Hawthorn or Collingwood would've made it next to be impossible to be denied access in the same circumstances.

Exciting news our first Academy prospect will be good to go in 2535. He fits the criteria of one parent being born overseas as his father is from the planet Vulcan. A lot of work will be put into his development, which already has started with his mother getting lots of attentive care, as this new academy graduate is half human. Exciting times ahead!

Because this would make things fairer and we simply cannot have that.
