As for the wider fanbase, cricket for most in England is a casual third or fourth sport (football and golf clear 1-2) so the average take is “we were told we were favourites because the Aussies are old and shaky, then they got injuries but we are 0-2 so fire everybody”.

Golf is the clear second in England in both participation and tv ratings when FTA. Cricket and rugby (both codes) are more niche. It is their dominance in participation at school level that disguises the reality somewhat.
