Jon Ralph says that once again, the players will get to choose who the captain is over the summer.

Does nobody else have an issue with this? And does anyone know how many clubs do it this way?

Imagine if Jy stays after what has come out and the players vote him in again. That will be hugely blackpilling for 2026 after what has transpired.

Players aren't going to choose someone who pushes them and drives standards, they are going to choose their best mates. Why are we allowing the inmates to run the asylum after what we have seen in the last 6 years.

Surely a club in our position, the coach should be making the pick.

Well my first instinct would be to say obviously the coach, and this modern fandangled nonsense of players choosing captains and co-captains and whatever other bullsh*t needs to be dispensed with for the love of the universe, but Josh Rachele turning up with a comedy beard to a sudden death final, the week after dragging his clubs jumper through the mud by being part of an insipid home final capitulation,(and moreoever the fact that no one seemed slightly bothered by it) has shown me that I no longer have a singular clue about the psychology of the modern AFL player or indeed the entire AFL landscape.

So yeh the players I suppose. It's gonna be Sheez or X either way surely.

i think it's the players with coach sign-off.

Like Nostra said, dont force a leader onto them that they don't want, it will create issues.

The Players.

My hope is, if Simpkin stays, he takes himself out of the running, and the players vote for someone like Sheezel, Xerri or Larkey to be our Captain next season.

Depends on the club

Geelong, Collingwood, Sydney - Strong leadership wherever you look, standards entrenched, cool heads in a crisis, you know who you can count on and been that way for ages.
North Melbourne - Wouldn't know what a strong leader was let alone how to be one. Structures fall apart under pressure, self preservation mode. A player vote just ends up with just the popular guy or the guy who's been around the longest.

Clarko should just pick his man, as Pagan did with Carey, and back him in.

Coach is who makes the most sense. At every level of sport and different sport I have played its generally done this way or someone is just the known leader or takes the mantle. It's usually pretty obvious & rarely ever a debate.

I think the coach should always pick the captain, as should always get their team regardless of outside influence, and if Simpkin wants to go, please do. It might allow us to pick up someone else who can actually use the ball.

Appointing Co-Captains with Simpkin & McDonald was the worst cultural decision this club ever made, bringing that Sydney & St Kilda BullShiz to North.

The head has rotted there ever since.

This decision should be made at board level with a cultural ruling that the NMFC never returns to co-captains or vice-captains and remains a One captain only club.

Key Qualities of an AFL Captain
  • Leadership & Communication:
The captain should be a vocal leader who can effectively communicate with both players and coaches, setting a strong example.

  • Character & Integrity:
They must have good behavior and be able to take accountability for the team's performance.

  • Consistency:
A captain typically demonstrates consistent performance on the field, often being a top player for the club.

  • Respect:
They need to earn the respect and trust of their teammates and be seen as a figure they look up to and listen to.

  • Representing the Group:
The captain acts as a representative for the playing group, often serving as an intermediary with club officials and the league.
So which player fit the above Definitely not Jy.

The captain of an AFL team is typically chosen by the club's coach and the leadership group, with input from the playing group itself, to represent the team and set the standard for performance and behaviour. While some clubs may vote on the captain, the coach and management have the ultimate decision-making authority.

How the choice is made:
  • Club Leadership:
The decision is made by the club's coach and leadership group, with the captain often being a player with strong leadership qualities, consistency, and a good relationship with coaches and teammates.

  • Player Input:
The captain also serves as a representative of the playing group, and player feedback may be considered.

  • Leadership Roles:
Many clubs now have a leadership group and multiple captains, rather than just a single captain, to ensure different facets of the team are represented.

We were in an absolute state long before the co-captains.

Well that's sorted then. Who does the AI offer up? Daniel Wells?
