No runners allowed during gametime

Hope the AFL don't budge on this, it's one of the few changes I support. This is a professional game ffs, we can't have random people running around the ground who may impact the game by getting in the way (sometimes intentionally). A runner "could have" changed the result of last year's grand final.

Brisbane are now having a sulk about it, get over it. Every other team is on a level playing field and you have plenty of time to coach and communicate. The game plans and tactical plays should be set preparing for the game and any changes can be tweaked after a goal, at the quarter break, by passing on messages through the benched players or via these electronic signs.

Every other professional sport in the world would laugh at the prospect of a runner. Tennis players can't even communicate with coaches during a game. Stop overcoaching the game and bring it back to basics.

You aren't very smart if you have ever used this sentence
Every other sport isn't our sport

Other sports have time outs, time to work out plays, technical fouls, punching allowed, shot clocks, super overs, full body padding an helmets etc

In soccer the players treat the referees like absoloute shit, rugby they couldn't be more respectful

Stop comparing Aussie Rules to other sports we it has different needs

Would you prefer the game to stop everytime a doctor or trainer enters the field like literally every other sport on earth?
**** off

That is what the whole week, quarter time, three quarter time and half time are for....******* ridiculous to think they need to micro manage players every few minutes.

And just as ridiculous to think the runners are impacting on the game or making your spectator experience a bad one.
And many players need to be micro managed as they are chosen before they are ready or good enough, which is why we now give them 50-75 games to find their feet. An unheard of happening just 30 years ago.

The biggest beat up of all time the so called runner incident in last years grand final. It was a crap kick that missed its target horribly and you could of had the whole coaching staff out on the ground and Yeo would of still marked it. How that Collingwood player escaped the wrath of the media for his poor kick was amazing.

This is such a non-issue. Kevin Bartlett came up with the idea that runners were ruining the game somehow and for some reason some people took his words as gospel. I mean of all the issues in the game runners were barely on it. It just annoys me people were so quick to become outraged by something that a few years ago no one cared about or even thought about, all because Keven Bartlett told them they should be outraged.
I reckon I've noticed runners being used 'tactically' to fill space on the field for about 20 years and have been for just removing them completely for about 5.

The coaches abused the privilage, so just take it away from them.

Rubbish, you have fallen victim to that whole narrative. Players either work it out or dropped. simple and play your best 22. If players not ready you leave them in lower grades until they are. If you want to take the risk and play them, go for it. But the runners can **** off, never been a real need. Been a luxury coaches indulged in for far too often.

Don’t know if you have coached or not but they are a vital tool in footy coaching, all players are not rocket scientists and some need a hell of a lot more direction than others. Each to their own however.
I find it amusing how runners were not an issue just 3-5 years ago, the media or AFL make one comment and it becomes an issue. The joy of social media and the reach the media now have.
There are countless issues in this game that are far more important than a runner which has no impact on the game or any impact what so ever on the spectators match day experience.

The experienced and well drilled sides will push to have the runners removed as it presents a tactical advantage.

How many goals can be kicked in a run on from a position being exploited? One, two maybe before the runner can go on anyway.

Not a huge advantage, but every break it could mean three to six goals.

Good football really

They were, they been an issue for well over a decade since they been encroaching more and more into time and space on field. How you not noticed that and been asleep at wheel is amazing. I ****ed hated it for about 15 years at least. I never thought they would ever fix the mess. Finally, finally someone done something about it.

LOL Nobody gives a shit. Nobody pays for tickets to see the coaches coach.

You are fantastically unobservant at the footy if you have never noticed them conveniently filling up space and getting in the way until recently.

How much of a step is giving players an earpiece to hear the coach on the field?
Earpiece is a bad idea. Literally impairs hearing, which matters.

A button that vibrates somewhere on the gurnsey could work; any time they feel a buzz, that's the alert they need to head for the bench. If any players have trouble feeling it, they can have it up the bum instead.

If you believe so then good for you, if a player on the field can’t decipher between his teams colours and a runners colour then some of them are dumber than I think.
And even if what you say is factual and it may be in one or two a games a weekend for a split moment then simply give them time allowed on the field
You have 45 seconds to deliver your message and return to the bench

I generally watch the footy funny enough when I go to the footy, I take great interest in how the players set up and go about their business. I really have never followed the runners but if they get a team in the AFL I may take more of an interest in them.

Now the runners are kept to minimum, it is not a problem for us that been sick of runners for years. More please. I do not actually care what coaches want. I care about players, playing, If the smart ones outplay the dumb ones, even better.

And no one buys a ticket to watch the runners or how many interchanges there are.

Exactlly, so keep them to a minimum and us watching get better bang for buck experience and less annoyed. Bring that next change on to fix the other annoying issue.

The AFL will be working on that next, bringing the smart players back to the dumb ones level as it is not fair for the dumb players.

Sorry you are very unobservant.

Also it's not a 'new' problem, it's something people have noticed at least as long as this site has been up in 2000, nearly 20 years ago.

I thought Hodge’s comments were a bit off.

I get that young teams need more instruction, and that runners can send nuanced messages during the course of play, but in the long run having them work out what to do via trial and error and not having to constantly refer back to the coaching group might actually fast track their development and give them more autonomy on the football field.

I’m any case they’ve got senior players around them to steady them and provide the kind of feedback you’d expect of runner anyway.

It's a good idea to trial this season, the inherent danger of course is that without the constant reminders some players might forget to exhale when breathing

I can see players falling over dying on field as they cannot work out how to breathe for themselves. Coaches association will be up in arms at being taken to court over it.

I think KB is a nuisance and don't listen to a word he says, but there have been loads of instances runners have blocked space in recent years.

I love KB,great idea, still warming to the hands in the back rule though.

Like I said, it’s much more fun when you go to the footy to watch the game instead of these other non issues.
