A cynic might say this is a convenient extension of a 3 year contract that was front ended to secure a first round compo pick and ensure no matching occurred, and the agreement was actually always a 5 year deal.

FA deals shouldn't be able to be extended / changed until the last year of the contract IMO.

I don't really see it as a big deal if it's not altering the terms of the original 3 years. Ie if the first 3 years are still on the original terms and this is just adding 2 more years after that (regardless of the terms of those 2 extra years) it's not really an issue. If the new contract is actually less money in any of those first 3 years then it's a problem because it alters the equation from the original FA move. My understanding is this kind of rejigging of a FA contract isn't allowed, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

Yeah, nah. As far as the salary cap is concerned, subsequent contracts don't change the FA implications.

For example... Let's say a player signed an FA contract, under which they were to be paid $500K in 2020/2021/2022. They then sign a new contract, paying them $400K in 2022/2023/2024. The club would still have to include the original $500K in their salary cap for 2022.

It can be re-jigged, but the terms of the original contract are what determines the club's salary cap.

I guess I'm thinking not so much of the salary cap but more about the old club / compensation.

For the sake of argument, say Brisbane offered Daniher $800k x 3 years with Essendon getting band 1 compo. Essendon might have thought he was worth better than the band 1 compo (say they reckoned 2 firsts, remember we're talking about Dodoro here), but weren't willing or able to match the $800k x 3 so had to let him go and take the band 1. If, again hypothetically, Brisbane and Daniher then renegotiate that to, say, $600k x 5 years, it's fine to say that it still counts as $800k under their cap in the first 3 years, but Essendon might be thinking "we would have matched $600 x 5 but we couldn't match $800x3", in which case they might have been able to get a better return.

This is why I think it's unfair to be allowed to change the terms of the original FA contract, regardless of what they do with any seasons beyond that initial contract.

I was thinking similar, but Essendon in this example will need to match the whole structure.

However, it is is $600x5 year deal (800, 800, 800, 300,300), then the compo payment is a band 2 (eg Brad Crouch), so Essendon would match it.

I think the optics are really bad when the AFL are alleged by a contact of very close to the club, rejecting trades between the Saints and Adel for Dunstan and Webster, knowing that cap space would be used for Crouch.

It's not about the salary cap, it's about the compensation pick and whether a club would match or not.

When it comes to the non Victorian clubs and who the number one club in each state/city is at the present time..

Sydney remain the number one club in NSW.
Brisbane remain the number one club in QLD.
West Coast remain the number one club in WA.

However, the discussion when it comes to the number one club in SA is not as clear cut as many people seem to think, and there's genuine arguments that can be mounted for both The Crows and The Power when it comes to which club is the number one club in SA.

The Power have finished top 2 as many times in the past two years as The Crows have in the past 15 years, along with The Power qualifying for as many preliminary finals in the past two years as The Crows have in the past 15 years.

We're currently looking pretty good off the field too given we've just announced a $4 million profit for the year 2021.

We're well on track to become debt free within the next five years.

Not bad for a little suburban club from Alberton which was only a bees diaphragm away from folding not too long ago, while being a complete rabble on and off the field.

We've managed to even gain international exposure by playing games in China and having our games at Adelaide Oval broadcast live to the Chinese on Chinese television.

Also, we have a superior win percentage to the Crows since the AFL has been an 18 team national competition.

Lol, the Chinese experiment was a debacle! It cost you money & hasn't given you any significant new fan base.

Meanwhile AFC spent the money investing in the women's competition & secured another 2 flags.

Port said it was a choice between China & the women's team... so I reckon most would agree you got that wrong.

Also, you may be 3% ahead in wins, but we have 2x as many men's AFL flags... which means more at the end of the day.

We have higher sponsorship, higher membership & higher crowds, so you have a bit to do to catch up with us off field too. You have relied on more AFL money than us to keep you afloat.

There's this thing called coronavirus that ruined our Chinese exposure, prior to that things were going well and were off to a good start when it came to our club and China.

Its February, its about this time every year, they start popping in here.

Dont worry their bubble usually bursts when they start playing genuine Top 4 teams and get exposed.

Interested to hear your thoughts on the Port Power women's team playing home games at Alberton Oval (and all the other Power lurkers on here).

We've had a heap of non footy people come on board with our women's team, a city fringe venue like The Parade has helped. It's kinda like 1991 all over again, this head start we have.

Then when Port Power come in, who will go to Alberton Oval?

Is that from a contact? Has anyone else with contacts heard this? I only heard rumours at the time but no confirmations by linked people.

We've played and defeated Geelong in qualifying finals the last two years.

You know, the same Geelong who have dominated the AFL every year since 2007 with star studded line ups.

When your club is known for being 'the team for all South Australians' and 'the pride of South Australia' then it should be a national powerhouse on the level of West Coast.
