A cynic might say this is a convenient extension of a 3 year contract that was front ended to secure a first round compo pick and ensure no matching occurred, and the agreement was actually always a 5 year deal.

FA deals shouldn't be able to be extended / changed until the last year of the contract IMO.

I don't really see it as a big deal if it's not altering the terms of the original 3 years. Ie if the first 3 years are still on the original terms and this is just adding 2 more years after that (regardless of the terms of those 2 extra years) it's not really an issue. If the new contract is actually less money in any of those first 3 years then it's a problem because it alters the equation from the original FA move. My understanding is this kind of rejigging of a FA contract isn't allowed, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

Yeah, nah. As far as the salary cap is concerned, subsequent contracts don't change the FA implications.

For example... Let's say a player signed an FA contract, under which they were to be paid $500K in 2020/2021/2022. They then sign a new contract, paying them $400K in 2022/2023/2024. The club would still have to include the original $500K in their salary cap for 2022.

For the sake of argument, say Brisbane offered Daniher $800k x 3 years with Essendon getting band 1 compo. Essendon might have thought he was worth better than the band 1 compo (say they reckoned 2 firsts, remember we're talking about Dodoro here), but weren't willing or able to match the $800k x 3 so had to let him go and take the band 1. If, again hypothetically, Brisbane and Daniher then renegotiate that to, say, $600k x 5 years, it's fine to say that it still counts as $800k under their cap in the first 3 years, but Essendon might be thinking "we would have matched $600 x 5 but we couldn't match $800x3", in which case they might have been able to get a better return.

This is why I think it's unfair to be allowed to change the terms of the original FA contract, regardless of what they do with any seasons beyond that initial contract.

I was thinking similar, but Essendon in this example will need to match the whole structure.

However, it is is $600x5 year deal (800, 800, 800, 300,300), then the compo payment is a band 2 (eg Brad Crouch), so Essendon would match it.
