A cynic might say this is a convenient extension of a 3 year contract that was front ended to secure a first round compo pick and ensure no matching occurred, and the agreement was actually always a 5 year deal.
FA deals shouldn't be able to be extended / changed until the last year of the contract IMO.

I don't really see it as a big deal if it's not altering the terms of the original 3 years. Ie if the first 3 years are still on the original terms and this is just adding 2 more years after that (regardless of the terms of those 2 extra years) it's not really an issue. If the new contract is actually less money in any of those first 3 years then it's a problem because it alters the equation from the original FA move. My understanding is this kind of rejigging of a FA contract isn't allowed, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.
