I'd be fine with that.

Sign a treaty with the indigenous nations and formally cut our ties with the old country, and celebrate that day. It can be whatever date you want.
... as long as it's not 26th January or another important day on the calendar. ;)

Plenty of dates to choose from.

The real Australia Day is 1st January, when all of the colonies joined together at Federation.

For some reason, they don't want to celebrate Australia Day on a day which is significant for the whole country - and doesn't have the issues associated with 26 Jan.

People don’t want to lose there public holiday

They gave him a 4-year contract. I'm assuming they were paying him more than minimum wages.

Minimum Base Payment for 2022 is $115K (source: AFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement, Schedule C, Section 1). 75% of $115K is $86,250 - so that's the absolute minimum they're saving by cutting him now.

So you agree that 25% of his current salary is about $30k then

There are a ton of options regarding "Australia Day" we could explore, it's only been on the 26th since 1994.
We absolutely could change it to another day (probably when we become a republic) we could even keep the 26th of Jan as a public holiday and just make it a day of Mourning, and a day of indigenous culture education.

The discussion just needs to start with the government and indigenous leaders about what needs to be done so that every Australian feels included in a day we should celebrate together and this great nation we live in and all its different cultures.

I think both Adelaide and Port did the right thing with their message. A credit to both clubs for actually recognising that the day is hard for some people within the football clubs.

A lot more people would support changing of Australia Day if it meant we get another holiday on top of keeping Jan 26 as Invasion Day Holiday.:drunk:
NSW can keep it as a public holiday - their equivalent of SA's Proclamation Day. Meanwhile, everyone (including NSW) can have a public holiday on a day that's relevant to the whole nation (e.g. Federation Day).

Republic Day.... When it happens.

Not exactly - Jan 26 is the establishment of 1 government
Jan 1 is the change to a different model

The true Australia day is either whatever date the first aboriginies (though, that is an ironic term for the people as they wern't indigenous to Australia, just migrated here first) first stood in australia. However, good luck finding those records from 50-65,000 years ago

Or

The future date of us finally getting independence from the crown.

Other suggestions Feb 26 (1606) have the same issues as the current day.

Jan 26 is the date when the Colony of New South Wales was founded - much the same as Proclamation Day is the date when the Colony of South Australia was founded. Similarly, WA celebrates Foundation Day, NT has Territory Day, and the ACT has Canberra Day (Tas, Qld & Vic miss out).

Jan 1 is the day when the colonies Federated, to form the Commonwealth of Australia.

Jan 1 is already a holiday (and a write off for most people)

Needs to be another date, preferably in January
I'd argue we need one in the back half of the year.

We have New Years Day, Easter, ANZAC Day, and the Queen's Birthday all in the first half of the year. Then there's a long gap to Christmas & Boxing Day in the last week of December, broken only by Labour Day.

Another holiday around Sept-Nov would be ideal.

Every club made a similar statement, it was cookie cutter with a few changes. It was an AFL thing, IMO no club can take any "credit".

National sorry day is 26th May. Turn it into a Reconciliation Day PH to replace the Queens Birthday (14th June).

Announce we are a Republic sometime middle of January or even mid December... sorted.

Anyone see this? People are happy to jump on young, fit athletes, at near zero risk choosing not to take a vaccine; but no outrage about this which is far more disgusting imo

This a public declaration of personal belief that they believe a minority group of society is not worthy of, does not deserve celebrating

What next? A white supremacist not wanting to play in the indigenous round?

She should be barred for life

I just don't understand why she would want take that stance, regardless of religious beliefs.

Just tell yourself....it's a jumper that my club is wearing this week.

And add in the fact that there is a significant proportion of LGBT participants and teammates in the league

“I won’t wear this jumper because it’s an affront to God, decency and all that is holy. I think you, your partners and how you live your life is disgusting. But go team!”

Mind blowing

What's also bizarre is this major story is not on the AFLW website https://www.womens.afl/news

From The Guardian:

"It’s understood she is comfortable with her decision but did not make it lightly and that it was a matter of balancing her personal faith, her support for the principles of pride and her teammates, and the expectations of her community."

So her community was expecting her to denounce homosexuality? I would have thought it would be a good opportunity to make a stand against that sort of intolerance, instead of just rolling over.

Also since when is there a fair "balance" between being tolerant and intolerant of the LGBTQ+ community? "Sorry teammates, just need to balance my support of you all with the part of me that actually can't tolerate what you are"

There was a discussion about that on the main forum earlier today.

My own view is that she has a right to abstain from the game based on her beliefs if she wants... but that choice will come with consequences, quite possibly the loss of her AFLW career. GWS might decide they don't want to be associated with someone who holds her viewpoints, or even simpler, someone who will make themselves unavailable to play based on their beliefs, weakening their entire team. At the very least, the majority of her teammates will likely not trust her from now on.

You're allowed to hold shitty beliefs as long as you're not actively abusive or offensive, but that doesn't shield you from the consequences of people not wanting to associate with a bigot.
