North Melbourne are on track to set an AFL Record for Bottom 2 Finishes for FOUR YEARS IN A ROW (2020-2023) - never before achieved in the AFL era (1990+).

This is a feat never achieved by the terrible Carlton, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Sydney Swans, the 'Bad News' Bears of the 90s or even Fitzroy teams in the mid 1990s!.

NORTH MELBOURNE - BOTTOM 2 - FOUR YEARS IN A ROW
2020: 17. North Melbourne (3 Wins) & 18. Adelaide (3 Wins).
2021: 17. Collingwood (6 Wins) & 18. North Melbourne (4 Wins & 1 Draw).
2022: 17. West Coast (2 Wins) & 18. North Melbourne (2 Wins).
2023: 17. North Melbourne (2 Wins) & 18. West Coast (1 Win).
TOTAL: 11 Wins & 1 Draw over 3 Years.

Comparing the Bottom 3 Teams in 2023 over the last four years.

2020:
West Coast (12 Wins); Hawthorn (5 Wins) & North Melbourne (3 Wins).
2021: West Coast (10 Wins); Hawthorn (7 Wins & 2 Draws) & North Melbourne (4 Wins & 1 Draw).
2022: Hawthorn (8 Wins); West Coast (2 Wins) & North Melbourne (2 Wins).
2023: Hawthorn (5 Wins); North Melbourne (2 Wins) & West Coast (1 Win).

Total Performance from 2020-2023.

Hawthorn: 25 Wins & 2 Draws.
West Coast: 25 Wins
North Melbourne: 11 Wins & 1 Draw.

So it turns out both Hawthorn & West Coast have clearly won more than twice as many matches as North Melbourne over the last four years.

North Melbourne's performance since 2020 has been historically bad - the first team in the AFL era to finish Bottom 2 for FOUR YEARS IN A ROW.

BOTTOM 2 FOR THREE YEARS IN A ROW

Gold Coast (2017-2019): 2017 (17th of 18 - 6 Wins); 2018 (17th of 18 - 4 Wins) & 2019 (18th of 18 - 3 Wins): 13 Wins over 3 Years.
Brisbane Lions (2015-2017): 2015 (17th of 18 - 4 Wins); 2016 (17th of 18 - 3 Wins) & 2017 (18th of 18 - 5 Wins): 12 Wins over 3 Years.
Carlton (2005-2007): 2005 (16th of 16 - 4 Wins & 1 Draw); 2006 (16th of 16 - 3 Wins & 1 Draw) & 2007 (15th of 16 - 4 Wins): 11 Wins & 2 Draws over 3 Years.
St. Kilda (2000-2002): 2000 (16th of 16 - 2 Wins & 1 Draw); 2001 (15th of 16 - 4 Wins) & 2002 (15th of 16 - 5 Wins & 1 Draw): 11 Wins & 2 Draws over 3 Years.
Fitzroy (1994-1996): 1994 (14th of 15 - 5 Wins); 1995 (16th of 16 - 2 Wins) & 1996 (16th of 16 - 1 Win): 8 Wins over 3 Years.
Sydney Swans (1992-1994): 1992 (15th of 15 - 3 Wins & 1 Draw); 1993 (15th of 15 - 1 Win) & 1994 (15th of 15 - 4 Wins): 8 Wins & 1 Draw over 3 Years.
Brisbane Bears (1990-1992): 1990 (14th of 14 - 4 Wins); 1991 (15th of 15 - 3 Wins) & 1992 (14th of 15 - 4 Wins & 1 Draw): 11 Wins & 1 Draw over 3 Years.

BOTTOM 2 FOR FOUR/FIVE YEARS IN A ROW (The last team to "achieve" this terrible feat).
St. Kilda (1982-86): 1982 (11th/12 - 4 Wins); 1983 (12th/12 - 5 Wins); 1984 (12th/12 - 5 Wins); 1985 (12th/12 - 3 Wins) & 1986 (12th/12 - 2 Wins): 19 Wins over 5 Years.

So it turns out North Melbourne (2020-23) is the worst performing team in the AFL era and the worst performing team in the VFL/AFL since St. Kilda (1982-86)!!

That is historically awful.

Probably need a priority pick but what really is the point? 4 Years of bottom finishes and early access to talent yet have shown no improvement what so ever.

Brisbane Bears - Last team to finish Bottom 3 for FOUR STRAIGHT YEARS (1990-1993)
Brisbane Bears (1990-1993).
1990: 14th/14 (4 Wins);
1991: 15th/15 (3 Wins);
1992: 14th/15 (4 Wins & 1 Draw);
1993: 13th/15 (4 Wins).
TOTAL: 15 Wins & 1 Draw over Four Years.

North Melbourne well behind the Brisbane "Bad News" Bears of 1990-93.

But yeah, there is no getting away from how s**t we've been. Today was probably the worst game I've seen in quite a while, against a team just one position higher.

Given that first round PPs have been dished out for less s**t performances over 4 years, we look forward to receiving ours this year.

There could be a pretty good argument made that this seasons Eagles side is the worst side of the AFL era, 1 win so far, 4 100+ point losses one of which was by 171 points an historically significant margin plus another 5 losses by 50+ points, and a percentage of 48.2%.:eek:

Ironic that this thread was started by a Saints supporter who have "won" more spoons than any other team by some distance.
Sad that you're making this comment tbh. Sad deflection to the club of the OP from what has been a torrid period in NM history.

Easier player movement and free agency and the soon to be mid season trade period mean this will only continue they could be bottom 4 for the next 10 years. Once their good players have been there 6 years for only a handful of wins they will all leave. Meanwhile they have to pay below average plodders like Logue huge salaries to join who then become even more unfit and lazy because they are now set for life

Hard times for North

Is getting the Tasmanian kid, at a time when the "Devils" are coming into the league going to be another JHF?

has been living in melbourne since last year so not quite the same and has years before that team enters to build the north team back up

but is just a cop out by the afl instead of giving the first round pp

Brisbane Bears (1990-1993).
1990: 14th/14 (4 Wins);
1991: 15th/15 (3 Wins);
1992: 14th/15 (4 Wins & 1 Draw);
1993: 13th/15 (4 Wins).
TOTAL: 15 Wins & 1 Draw over Four Years.

North Melbourne well behind the Brisbane "Bad News" Bears of 1990-93.
Sydney Swans of 1992-4 were bad.

3 wins in 1992, 1 win in 1993, 4 wins in 1994.

Swans then traded in Tony Lockett and Paul Roos at the end of 1994.

8 wins in 1995.

Grand final in 1996

Still remember freos 2017 season. 14th out of 18th. 8 wins and 14 losses.

Had some nasty bearings. 89 point loss to Port in Adelaide. Lost by 100 points to the crows in Adelaide 143-43.

Then had back to back 104 point losses to the swans and tigers

Winning games is not the role of the mighty Roos in the AFL. It's to prop up the entire competition by attracting crowds close in number to their points against tally to Sunday twilight games versus the Freos, GCS and Giants at Docklands Stadium.

Thank-you for your sacrifice North Melbourne.

Over the last 2 seasons, we've won more games than WC. So they've been worse than us, only 3 wins from 38 games.
Yes over the last 2 seasons, however OP is talking about last 4 seasons. Maybe WC can beat North's record in 2 years
