why has Toumpas fallen out of favour? it's not so long ago he was touted as being a possible number 1 ahead of Whitfield. Then he was an absolute lock at number 2 and our only question was who to take with number 3. Now he doesn't even get a look in?

It strikes me as odd too, the only real question mark was him leaving SA and wanting to return. Having said that, I was confident he'd be in the Coniglio mould at #2 and be signing an extension early in the piece.
You can only think that with Plowman odds on to crack the top 3 and solidify the backline, SOS and co must simply place more value on O'Rourke's skill set over Toumpas' going forward with the squad as it's currently constructed. I'm still backing in Whitfield/Toumpas/Plowman though!

From my (limited) understanding of the draft crop, the club feels that we've got our inside players covered so prefer O'Rourke as better receiver and outside player as opposed to Toumpas who is not as good in that regard but has a better inside game. Plowman is purely a needs selection - someone to play that quarterback/third tall role that's become so popular that we were trying Curtley in this season.

He was never a chance for pick 1 whitfield was always the lock for that. But was always the most likely guy to go pick 2 but he did have surgery on both hips this year so maybe that turned us off or maybe its just our anti-south australian policy. After all word is once SOS discovered Hombsch was from SA he was packing his bags for Port
Also on our perceived preference for Vic players over other states it could be as simple as us thinking that we will lose players eventually so better for them to be from vic where more clubs will chase them and get a better trade deal then we would from 2 team states

Why wouldn't WB get him? Seems odd.
I can't imagine not getting him at 14. He is a perfect fit for Giants in that we can give him a good 3 years development and he instantly replaces Giles at the end of his contract.
We will have another early pick next year to add another midfielder.
Plowman comes across as a champion bloke, looks like a real good kid
Also Brett Anderson from inside football is saying if Menzel is there for our pick 12 we will grab him. He also said tigers might take Jaksch at 9.

If so I guess I'm pretty happy but maybe in my wish list I'd have Corr at 12 and Grundy at 14. That way we'd get two outside gun mids, a genuine key defender, a rebounding defender/3rd tall, and the developing star ruckman we so desperately need. All bases would just about be covered.

The theory is that the Bulldogs already have plenty of his type so will add class - Macrae and Menzel, with Stringer as a smokey. Port would then pass on him in favour of a local boy, but I really can't see him getting past the Lions and Richmond given the Lions still need quality midfielders and Richmond is reportedly keen on a midfielder as well (Vlastuin, who Wines may be an upgrade on).
It's an interesting approach because it also lends itself to the players getting into the PSD and going where they want. Speaking as a Lions fan, the Victorian players (Vic Metro especially) are the ones that we've had issues retaining much more so than any other.
I doubt we would have a policy against drafting from a particular State. I think last year we did try to bundle kids from similar regions together to make the transition more easier and there is probably a bit of that again.
It would be very short sighted to ignore a player just because he came from one of the other regions. Pretty sure the best midfield prospect in 2013 is a Sth Australian in James Aish.
Imagine if we drafted Grundy and Kennedy at 12 and 14, those two are best mates and have a wonderful combination going together.

Well, #28 moves up to #27 with news that Adelaide has withdrawn #20 and another selection as an 'act of goodwill' towards investigations.
With some potential sliders that one spot could come in handy.

Cal Twomey's latest mock on afl.com.au has Grundy sliding all the way to Geelong at #16. That'd be a great get for them considering he was considered a lock for #2 post-season. No doubt we'll have a look at #14 if he's still on the board though.

If we don't take him at least 14 then I assume we are drafting Tippett. In saying that - drafting both Jaksch and Corr might be nice....
Nah - Jaksch and Grundy are better.
