Seriously, I've watched footy my entire life and saw countless live performances of Dusty and I never walked away thinking that guy was above everyone else on the footy field.
But at times, when Dangerfield has one of those performances, as he did on the weekend, he just looks a completely different animal.
It's like watching a bully taking out his frustration on the school kids a year or two below him.

The marking threat (something Martin never had), the attack at the footy and that immediate burst of speed. He's now about surpass Dustin Martin and I get the feeling you are hating it.
Dangerfield is a whole level above IMO as you've expressed well here.

Martin was good in the "makes it look easy" way, with goalkicking the only area he shades Dangerfield in.

Dustin Martin won 48.5% of his offensive 1 v 1 contests, easily the most of any player since the stat was recorded from 2012 onwards.

Patrick Dangerfield has won 42.9% of his offensive 1 v 1 contests.

Dangerfield's record in this stat would be more or less the second most since the stat was recorded. It shows it is a great strength of his. Martin won 13% more of these contests than Dangerfield. That is, as they say, off the charts.

So you now have a second way Martin was clearly better than Dangerfield. What you saw in all those finals from Dustin Martin was not an apparition, it really happened. He was almost impossible to stop because he won contests with unmatched reliability, and kicked or set up goals with almost unerring precision.

Dangerfield can give a strong account of himself in terms of the contests, but falls apart in comparison when converting that to goals for his team. Thus Martin averaged 22 disposals and 2.8 goals + assists in his career in finals, with a huge record in Preliminary and Grand Finals where he averaged 3.8 goals + assists, which I am pretty sure is the most of any player this century. Dangerfield averages 24 disposals and 1.6 goals + assists in finals. In Preliminary and Grand Finals he averages 2.2 goals + assists.

But you have led me perfectly to my favourite Martin stat. The most incredible thing about his finals scoring feats is they were achieved in such low scoring games, so they were critical. In his 3 Grand Finals Dusty scored 10 goals from 14 shots at goal. The 3 opposition TEAMS score 18 goals in these matches, and thus outscored Dusty by 2.8 goal per game on average. Only John Coleman himself in history has outdone Dusty in this stat, and he was a permanent Full Forward of course, and probably the greatest ever Full Forward, or as good as. Dangerfield has scored 1 goal in his two Grand Finals from 3 shots at goal. The opposition TEAMS have scored 20 goals in those games, so they are outscoring Dangerfield at the rate of 9.5 goals per Grand Final. The good news is if Dangerfield scores 11 goals more than Brisbane's whole team this Saturday he will then deservedly take his place equal with Dusty in terms of Grand Final scoreboard impact.

I love that you keep supplying these percentage numbers as though Martin is singlehandedly responsible for Richmond’s defence in these grand finals šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Like it was Martin who stopped GWS from scoring virtually at all. Like he dinned a beard and disguised himself as Bachar Houli against Adelaide or something šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

What a person achieves is important PB. The context in which they achieve it is even more important. A goal in a low scoring game its relatively more valuable than a goal in a high scoring game. Thus, Dustin Martin's 4 of 19 goals scored in the 2020 Grand Final is relatively of similar value when compared to G Ablett Senior's 9 of 42 goals in the 1989 Grand Final. This is not to mention Dusty's two goal assists which is more than Ablett had in his entire career.

You will get it one day. I thought Danger finally learning how to impact in finals at 36 would be your turning point, but alas, no. ;)

I've only seen one performance like that from Dusty in the flesh.

Unfortunately, it was the 2020 GF...

Dangerfield in that mood is the apex predator. Even at 35 years of age he's still got close to the same explosive power as he did in his prime. Shame we don't get player weights but doesn't look like he's slimmed down either - still the same chonker he's always been.

That’s tremendous.

He isn’t responsible for opposition teams scoring poorly, is he, and pretending he is, won’t change that, regardless of how brilliant his performance was. Dangerfield wasn’t responsible for how well our defence stood up the other night without Stewart and a hobbled Henry. He had nothing to do with it.

This is not entirely correct. Richmond being able to leave a massive scoring threat outnumbered ahead of the ball, knowing he will keep the scoreboard ticking over allows greater resources to be deployed in other areas, like full ground defence.

In those finals games Richmond were able to defend Hawkins, Stewart, Dangerfield. Cats were not able to defend Martin. And just as importantly, they were not able to attack off Martin. Thus Cats scored an average of 7 goals in the 3 finals v the Tigers.

A wall of text that everyone will have skipped over as no one here gives a shit about Dusty.

FMD.

Are Richmond supporters STILL trying to believe their club is STILL relevant?

Should I start waxing lyrical about the Coventry and Collier brothers, and the most successful dynasty in the history of the game?

You might want to do that, would be a change for you posting about things that have actually happened rather than going off 10 years before acceptances claiming the world's favourite squib is the GOAT.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to oblivion. We were just on our way out after a very brief period, we think you will settle in nicely for your second extended stay in the last 13 years. 😁

Their first ā€˜extended’ stay in oblivion during the last 13 years went for four seasons and the worst of them saw them win 9 matches. Boy what a struggle

Dangerfield averages plenty of finals goals and assists for the games where he rotates or plays forward. Mostly he's been a permanent midfielder.

Clearances: Dangerfield 5.6 vs Martin 3.6
Contested possessions: Dangerfield 13.6 vs Martin 11.3

Dangerfield's played a whopping 30 finals quite evenly spread across 2009-2025: from kid to grandpa. Martin's are almost all condensed to his 4 year peak in a dominant dynasty side. Take a look at his averages outside of that range: 2013-2015 and 2022. He just played very few finals besides the dynasty years and so those goal contribution averages remained intact.

Astounding that Collingwood's worst season during our apparent period of 'oblivion' between 2014 and 2017 was better than Richmond's median performance during their recent 3 decade year period of oblivion...

Oh boy.

This is a great effort.

I wonder if either of them managed that in finals against the best opposition. I wonder if anyone else has managed that? :)

Who else do you play finals against? The woooden f**ken spooners?

Did Dangerfield’s 24, 12 contested and a goal against last year’s premiers in the prelim also happen against the bottom placed team in the same match in some quirk of Lewis Carrollesque fantasy as a consequence of the entire MCG being viewed through the looking glass?

Dangerfield played a great game. Nice to see him finally produce something of that magnitude after about 30 finals.
