Look at our age profile. We can't just have all 25 and under players, we need experienced depth and Paul Stewart is a good player. He's never reached his potential due to a variety of factors, but that doesn't mean he's not an AFL quality player.

For what it's worth, gastro struck a lot of the team on the weekend, so I'm not gonna get my panties in a bunch over individually poor performances from that game.

So a few people were not happy with Pauls effort on Sunday..... geez
Here is the reason...............................
Two Power players — midfielder Robbie Gray and forward Paul Stewart — suffering a gastro virus before Sunday’s clash with Collingwood at the MCG.
Stewart was so drained, he was substituted out of the game soon after half-time despite the Power’s need for an extra tall forward.
So I suppose a few posters here will now be saying ......Woops

He was clearly distressed when he came off the field. There would have been a few who probably shouldn't have suited up. Especially considering the VM scare at the same time.

On Stewie, he's AFL standard and is a courageous creative player off half back. Injury and selection decisions haven't been kind to him in recent seasons, but happy to have him around.

My first thought was '2 years...really?' but if we are going to lose Heath (hope not) & Stevenson at the end of the year and also possibly Logan as well, then we do need some sort of experienced backup for the defensive group.

Not a lot of universal love going on in here at all! I like Stewart, I think he's always a solid contributor and he's exactly the type of player that's good to have as depth in case of injury to the first 22. You know he can come in and fill a role. Hopefully he can stay relatively injury free over the next 2 years.

Macca on the podcast you agreed Stewart hadn't done enough to stay on the list, and he's had decided indifferent form since - now you're saying you're OK with a 2 year contract? What?

I think people are being a bit too harsh on him he's a utility so he is forced to play in a whole range of positions.
2 years is fine.
He is not near being delisted either IMO. If our full squad was fit he would be 25-30th on our list.

I like conflicting messages :D

I would have thought he was well in line to be delisted and my original reaction was similar to yours, but if they've made the decision to keep Stewart, and drop Heath, Stevenson & Logan with Cassisi gone from that group & Clurey yet to sign as well then fair enough. I still think 2 years is excessive for what he's done. We need some experienced cover for that defensive group whilst DBJ develops and to see how Hoon recovers from his knee. I would have thought a 1 year deal would have been enough though.

If we end up keeping Heath & Logan then it looks more of a bizarre decision.

I would add Stevenson to the above group, too, if his contract's up. I'm neither ecstatic nor miffed about this, to be honest. I don't really believe in keeping players for "depth." I'm more inclined to think that there should be a 'best-22' and 'players-you-eventually-want-to-be-best-22,' and that depth is a product of that, but Stewart isn't the worst guy to keep for now. A second year is a trifle unnecessary, but it's not Chocoesque stuff, either.

I don't think he's best 22. He's a player that is way too good at SANFL level but at AFL level is a bit of a jack of all trades and that costs him.

I think his best role for us was on the half back flank, but that was before we had Jonas or Pittard and before Broadbent came on.

I think he's a solid depth player though and he's obviously well liked and respected at the club, so i'm happy he's signed on.

I'm indifferent. I hope he steps it up though.

I assume this means other players are in the headlights.

Logan will get another 1 year contract. Has done nothing bad all year. He would be in the team now if Dom didn't come in for the Melbourne game.
Agreed not sure why Logan is being put in the Heath, Stevenson, Hitchcock bracket of potential delistees. With Dom retired I can see him getting another one year deal, if Impey was injured the only cover for a small defender we've got is DBJ who's a fair way off.

I probably would've given Tom a contract extension before Stewy because he's more capable of translating his great SANFL form to the AFL side.

I'd imagine he will re-sign around the time list changes are being made. I think Newton and Young signed 1 year deals last year around that time too.

He is 30 years old, has never been good enough for AFL and we are gonna give him another year. Only at Port.
Serviceable hard nut, with a young list & Dom retiring I have no problem with it

What a bunch of negative campaigners this thread is bringing out

Serviceable hard nut? More like heroballing liability.

Short memories here, back in the dark days when he actually got gametime he was no better than M.Thomas, Pettigrew, Rodan or Pfeiffer.
Did you catch his final against collingwood last year? Short memories aye

Because he was having to do more than what he does now, as we had such a shit list. Plus you can't have a bunch of Logan type players in a side, but with a young list having one to give some spine is useful. In a couple of years when we aren't stocked with players under 100 games then he won't be need (and will be gone).
