I am representing the Pies at Phantom Draft and am interested in your thoughts on how the first four picks should be spent.

Also interested inthoughts if Selwood aint there.

I haven't seen any of the draft kids play and would be merely commenting on BF consensus from posters who seem to have an idea from their writings and from media snippets, comments etc.

Unfortunately(maybe), the top 7 look pretty clear cut to me (not in any order)

Gibbs
Leuenberger
Gumbleton
Hansen
Thorp
Selwood
Sellar

If any of these are available at pick #8 take them but that's not rocket science.

If all gone, I think Albert Proud at #8 then a KPP at #10-Reid, McKenzie or Reiwoldt.

If as spoken about Sellar slides to 8 take him and possibly Armitage and #10 as I think Proud will go to Saints at pick 9 if available.

Either way I think Pies will take a mid and a KPP with picks #8 & 10 unless astonishingly 2 of the 7 named are available and both are KPP.

Don't forget we still have mids in Ryan Cook and Danny Stanley who were both bottom aged picks last year so I don't think we'll draft 2 mids with 8 & 10. Throw in Daisy and Pendles and we do have some young mids.

Good luck and draft some goodens.

Best available at all times. Dont bow down to the the overrated thinking that we need midfielders. Its not as if this draft will make or break our season, We wont win it next year, So we have time.

I agree with you. You guys should just select best avaiable. Later in the draft you can select for your needs and tkae a punt if you wish.

Depending on availability at time of picks:

Rd 1 - midfielder (Selwood, Proud, Armitage or Hislop) and KPP (Sellar, N.Brown or McKenzie)

Rd 2 - Midfielder ( best available)

Rd 3 - KPP/Ruckman (best available)

Rd 4 - Forward/mid (D.Kelly/ Nathan Batsanis)

When judging midfielders lets not get sucked into just looking for pace, we need players who can think, hit target and can direct traffic therefore footy smarts over pure pace.

Our KPP defenders will be thining out soon as Wakelin is already nearing the end.

You can never have enough smaller goal kicking forward who can also go through the middle.

Interesting because I rate Proud higher enough to take him at 8 if Selwood is gone.

At 10 would take Proud then Hislop before Armitage and Houli would be an outsider bc I think he would compliment Selwood very well.

Not really interested in taking N.Brown that early, McKenzie is a bit one dimensional to go that high. More likely to punt on a Tippett who can play fwd and Ruck.

50/50 as to whether I go tall at 10. Would get a top KPP at that pick and would still find a very good mid at 28, Batsanis/Boak/Moss etc. Not sure if many quality KPP will still be there at 28 although N.Brown was there in the first phantom draft.

Not a big wrap for Sellars.

good luck Snoop Dog, you seem to getting more questions than answers mate, if you're struggling on the phantom draft, how's you image the club would be on draft day ?

In 2007 we have a number of players getting towards the end of their careers:
Buckley 34, Wakelin 33, Burns 32, Clement 31, Rocca 30, Licuria 29 and Presti 29.
4 talls and 3 midfielders. Of the talls 3 are backs of 191, 190 and 193cm tall with there replacements Maxwell 190, JA 191, O'Brien 187 and maybe Cox 190. Assuming JA or Cox makes an AFL level player we still need at least one 193+ defender that can play on power forwards.

Our midfield has players like Shaw, Shaw, Swan, Davis, Pendles, Thomas, Lonie, Johnson, Didak, etc. that can all play through the middle at different times in games to support the older Licuria, O'Bree and Holland. We need at least one dedicated inside midfielder. I don't agree with some peoples views that we should pick two midfielders at 8 and 10 as there are plenty of capable midfielders available later in the draft.

Our forwards are reasonably young but we need a future replacement for Rocca and a fourth tall.

Rucks, may only have two if Fanning and C. Cloke are delisted so need two more rucks.

Therefore I believe we need one tall back, two tall forwards, two rucks and an inside midfielder. This is assuming we are not going for a flag in the next two years as the talls will take a couple of years to come on.

Pick 8 - Proud/Armitage unless one of (Gibbs, Hanson, Gumbleton, Sellwood, Thorp, Sellar or Leuenberger slips.)
Pick 10 - N. Brown or Ried.
Pick 28 - Renouf, Tippet, M. Brown if available otherwise Schmidt, Grigg, Boak, Urquhart, O'Keefe as best available.
Pick 44 - Hampson (if we haven't already picked a ruck), Dawes or Frawley (if we haven't already picked say Sellar and M. Brown) and Adams, Batsianis, Anderson as best available.
Pick 60, 76, 92/PSD/rookie - a ruck if available otherwise best available.

Definitely have a punt on Chris Dawes if he is still available at 63 but more likely may need to take a punt at 44.

He's had a knee reco recently and will miss most if not all next year. But that is why he'll go so late.

From reports from the U18 champs he was in the top few KPP performances along with Hawkins.

He's a big kid too. 100kg+. Well, worth a shot with a late pick.

Why not?? You don't see to many taken late in the draft these days that turn out to be guns because of so much analysis of players.

How come?? I've heard he didn't interview that well with Port, but I recall reading an article on him this time last year prior to the draft where they said this kid will go No.1 next year.

He couldn't have dropped off that much, surely.

Theoretically, Goodes has no set position either, tad short for Ruck not quite in KPP mould but he's a absolute gun and very difficult match up.

All ratings based on midfield value only, 1 being dud 10 out an out star will not rate 1st year players.

R.Shaw - Average maybe a lockdown role like he did on Judd a few years ago.5/10

H.Shaw - Unproven , alot different when playing in the mid compared to playing a more loose running HB role. Shows potential 6/10

D.Swan - If he keeps up last years performance and starts to turn out a bit more game time he will star. 8/10

B.Davies - Has shown nothing at AFL level that suggests he will be a midfielder at the elite lvl. 3/10

S.Pendlebury - Will be a future gun in our midfield was clearly best on ground for willy in the final loss and showed a fair bit at AFL lvl.

D.Thomas - Will also feature prominantly in both the middle and up forward is Hird like in many regards.

Lonie - Nope!!! Wish he wasn't even at the club soft and everyone knows it , can kick long but rarely does. Puts undue pressure on teammates a lot of the time with short sideways movement especially when played in defence his long running goals are few and far between. When you play in the midfield you have to be able to put your body on the line when the time comes Ryan does not EVER!!! 4/10

B.Johnson - Adds a bit of mongrel to our team, kicking has improved greatly over the years and will be a key part of our midfield. 7.5/10

Didak - Gun but still has a way to go before he can be a elite midfielder. 7.5/10

In summary we still would not have an elite midfield that will worry teams like the Eagles 04 , 05 , 06 , 07 , lions in 01, 02, 03, 04 , Dogs right now and to a lesser degree Saints in Ball , Hayes , Dal'Santo , Baker.
We need Gun Midfielders and a Ruckman then KPP.

I think Couch Coach might have been referring to Leon Davis, not Ben Davies.

why doesnt batsanis get a real mention guys??? apart from bein the nephew or the great man daics, the kid has shown us- as did the flying mop "daisy"- that he is a big game player... also, that fact that he is greek would surely lead to a signifiacant rise in membership for us as the are many greek-australian collingwood supporters yearning for a magpie with hellenic heritage... heritage aside aside i have seen the kid play.... and he can surely do that.... any thoughts please?

loki04 - My message may not have been very clear with regard to the midfielders.

My point is that the nine players I listed plus Licuria, Holland and O'bree means that we have 12 players cappable of playing in the middle although not off the calibre of a WC midfield.

Compare this to maybe only having two rucks, no deffenders over 190cm's and only two tall forwards (can you call Rusling tall at 189cm?) in a couple of years.

My oppinion is that we have to bite the bullet and say we are not going to win a flag in the next couple of years (sorry bucks, burns and jim) and therfore should be building and therefore going talls that take longer time to develop.

The only reason why I would draft lots a midfielders is if we were in a possition to win a flag now and therefore risk having very few talls in a few years and therefore bottoming out like Brisbane/Port.

yeah.. i agree to an extent.... but wouldnt it be nice to see greek in the black and white? A greek who has much potential... and IMO will be become a steal ta the draft.. this kid will be the one who got away if we dont draft him..... for gods sake we need a greek in the team. within all successful organisations you will find a greek... batsanis will help us get to a flag... gees if morrison could get a game for us there is no reason why this kid shouldnt be drafted..

if we are willing to take an irishman with the intention of "teaching him" the game because hes got potential, why wouldnt we take a young boy with existing talent and work on his weak points...

lets say we were going to take two mids at 8 and 10.

lets also assume Proud and Selwood are gone.

What is the best mix between;

Hislop, Armitage, Houli, Connors, Pettard, benjamin, Jetta, OBrien, batsanis

Just interested in views?

If Proud and selwood are gone which could be likely.I can see brisbane picking up selwood and geelong could pick up proud. Then a few kpp will fall to eight Do we then go for say a sellar or thorp at 8 and pickup a Armitage or conners at 10.Then we could look at hislop, houli,or batsanis at say pick 28.One of these guys should be available at 28.Then what about our ruck options.IF we leave our run a little late say pick 44 .I think renouf, tippet and goldstein or everitt will be taken by then.I don't know if there are any other ruck options other than these guys and leuemberger,he'll go top 5 for sure.
