I'd bid on Daicos for the same reason

I can't believe the bloke is allowed to publicly 'nominate' Collingwood as his preferred destination in an open draft, father-son or not
He has to, otherwise Pies unable to match a bid i.e. he is in the open draft. Same process for Bailey Scott.

If we are taking Horne Francis I hope we just take him at 1. Aside from the good press, little real benefit to us in bidding on daicos, we want to start him off being happy in joining North. Taking him, but not at 1 might leave a sour taste in his mouth.
Absolutely, it give us a real advantage, that's the whole point of matching offers, its to hold clubs to account, we copped it when WCE bidded on Lmac at 8 and it cost us access to more talent at the pointy end, IMO its commercially negligent not to do so. why give the opposition a free ride? exactly the same thing happend with JUH/bulldogs last year.

Pretty simple, if we rate Dacios > or = JHF, we bid.

I don't necessarily like the whole "marketing" argument for pick 1 - 2020 is a great example. JUH has faced far more spotlight then Thilthorpe. I think being Pick 2 will benefit JHF. I don't care about the marketing factor, I care that he has a successful career.

I'm not sure where this notion of marketing off the #1 pick is coming from. Can't recall it ever happening.

The 2x star #1 picks I can think of - Hodge and Riewoldt - only became household names 6+ years into their time in the system. The only #1 pick I can think of who had any fanfare at the time was Josh Fraser. Not exactly a precedent worth following.

You could mount an argument for building a marketing approach off a coach (eg Blight 2000) or mature player (Plugger to COLA) signing but not a kid yet to se foot in an AFL club.

It's never happened before and I doubt we'd be dumb enough to be the first to give it a shake.

The only publicity the number #1 pick will draw in is from people who already into football enough to know their club had the #1 pick. All in all a pretty small subset of sad sacks really.

I think the marketing narrative of pick 1, and I stress this is from some and not all, is linked to Horne-Francis stating he wants to be number one and the residual fear of the go-home factor is making people worried we might upset him for some reason if we bid on Daicos over him (costing him 10k which is crazy, we'll find him the 10k).

IMO he presents as a very team oriented individual and if we were to bid on Daicos and even Darcy, in the knowledge both are absolute guarantees to be matched, undoubtedly he would see it was done to improve our own draft position and he would still be drafted as the number one live pick.

If he's the sort of individual more worried about his career status where it begins than where it ends then we can gladly take the pick package from an SA club in two years. I've seen nothing or heard nothing of this kid to suggest that is in his character.

You forget the success of Melbourne and Jacks Watts on the Queens birthday weekend way back when. People still talk about it.

I half barracked for a loss against Richmond so we could get JHF, don't tell me now he's not that good.

Don't stress.

If Finn Callaghan was the obvious first selection, posters would be nitpicking the 3 games (out of 6) against his own age group that he wasn't named in the bests this year, as well. Pile on would probably double down on the fact it was at rep level, not even at state level...

Or Josh Gibcus' 9 out of 12 not named in the bests... Or Ben Hobbs' 3 out of 8 not named in the bests...

Comes with the territory of being the top prospect. Every single one of these kids have inconsistencies. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't be rated where they are from a talent perspective.

Dont forget that Horne-Francis also wants to be the number #1 pick. Plus he gets to enjoy the $10000.00 from NAB for being taken at #1. Why should we give it to Daicos or Darcy?
